I’d fire him. The fact that he thinks he has control over what industries the algorithm would participate in gives me the feeling he acts entitled.

You may be a startup, but he needs to respect the direction of the CEO.

I’ve seen it time and time again from liberals. They tell you how to run your company, they run it into the ground and then they blame it on you.

Not much difference compared to the FDA or other governmental body that has slowly fired/eliminated anyone but yes men over the years. Sure, your work might not be so important; but the fundamental difference is there isn't one.

Tough one. Unless you can readily replace 'it' (so as not to misgender just in case) you simply have to put up with it but insist on it not using its ethics in the algo.

Are you the CEO? Are you the team leader that the CEO will accept your judgment on the issue?

I would tell him no we are not programming in ethics, this is math, and that's it.

Start looking for his replacement before you have the conversation in case he ups and leaves.

There are many brilliant young programmers out there. You will find another.

But if he says, "oh okay" and stays, be sure there is someone who is able to review his work to make sure he didn't put any nonsense in thinking you are not smart enough to find it.

Take him out for a weekend, overnight, team building event... then give him an old fashioned blanket party.

Stick wake up then, out the door if he can't get with the program.

Someone that talented will leave behind a dozen ways to screw you, you can't even imagine.

Well... He needs to code to the design specifications, not whatever he wants. He can bring up his points in design review, and you can instruct him that he will not be working on that. Once his commits are checked in, do a code review, and if he's intentionally done anything other than what was instructed in the design docs, write him up. 3 write ups and he's fired.

I would be frank with him that he is free to write whatever he wants on his own time, but while he's on company time, you need him working on the company's objectives, not his own.

There are 3 topics that are off limits in the workplace:

Religion
Sex
Politics

This is not his personal political platform, it's a product.

I usually just give dirty looks until they become hostile with me. On the rare occasion they shut the fuck up and give a dirty look back instead of talking, we become friends.

I agree as well. A few of these employers seem to enjoy the schtick of employment and pay they hold over others though.

I never had to fire anyone who worked for me. I was always very frank with my employees, the company's objectives, and the employees own goals. The couple that would have been on their way out ended up coming to their own conclusions about moving on. I made clear that if they didn't feel like the department was a good fit for them, I would work with them to either find other placement in the company or move elsewhere. Everyone left on good terms though about 99% stayed for the duration of my tenure there.

I didn't lead software engineers, but I sat in many, many meetings with engineering and was directly involved on a leadership level with bringing a new product to market from scratch, so I know pretty well what the process is like. The company I worked for used an Agile/Scrum methodology. It's common so if you're not a techy you should be able to find some good info about it online.

A disruptive employee is cancer and nobody is irreplaceable; You can try and talk to him and see if his "ethics" changes his approach, otherwise point to the door.

Get rid of him. You don't know what kind of nonsense he'll hide in the code.

You need someone you can trust, not some loose cannon leftie.

It may slow you down while you get someone else, but at least the product will be right in the end.

If you are concerned now and asking us you are way behind the curve. Lay down the law NOW and if you get any resistance disband the whole group and start fresh without his knowledge. Get another IT person to start from the ground up and go from there.

Fire him immediately and don't look back.

Was with a company where an engineer had been really mistreated relative to his work and genius --- he knew more than all the other engineers put together.

Well, he warned them,repeatedly. They used him. Finally he quit. The software he wrote to check the the computers and software being implemented was screwed and everything ground to a halt.

They finally hired him back at like 5x his previous pay.

He was so much smarter than all of them combined. Kudos to him. He was a good guy.

But, the scrunt you are talking about needs to be kicked out the door immediately before he embeds to much chaos into the project.

This is very true on many legals...my son owned a printing company and many friends want a job....he has saying......"Friendship can get you a job, but business will get you fired"....he never waited....if they didn't work out they were gone!

Tell him that it is against the law. In many states what he is proposing would amount to an unfair and deceptive business practice. You would have to reveal the existence of any such code prominently in your advertising and disclosure statement. Good luck selling your product once that is known.

Dealing with someone who works for you and against you at the same time adds hours to your workday and steals years from your life. Politely and professionally inform him that "the company has re-evaluated the viability of the project, and decided to go another direction". Rip the bandaid off, and move on with someone who is a better fit.

We are , of course, assuming that OP was smart enough to have his people sign ironclad non-disclosure agreements before beginning work.

Insist on modular code design whereby inputs such as a table of industries to avoid are in a separate input area, rather than being strung along inline in the code.

Then you can just blank out or comment out that table when it comes to actual trading.
