Our response infrastructure is hardened against that, which is why it’ll never happen. The country launching that level of attack would be glass within 30 mins after. Certainly the leadership of same at least.

More doom theater.

Our response infrastructure is NOT hardened against that.
During the 1970s and early 80s an EMP attack was considered a viable threat and equipment was built to withstand that.

In the mid 80s it was ruled out, and we stopped build ships and aircraft to handle that type of threat.

Now we are looking at it as a threat again, but it will be 10-20 years before any military tech or equipment is back to that standard.
I know a thing or two, because I've seen a thing or two.

You can get a glimpse of how ugly and dire things will be by reading the book "One Second After" It will chill you to your very bones. I read it when it first came out in print.
Things will be so horrific you won't want to live....utterly horrible and brutal will gain new more intense meaning.

Amazon still has it.

Everyone should read this book...just to get a taste of how bad things could be if an EMP attack occurred.

It's a good dose of reality...in a fictional setting.

What if there is an EMP with no obvious outside source? You know, one just goes off in kansas or something like that, with no rocket approaching from outside the nation's borders?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82571668

It is a line-of-sight weapon. To reach a large area, it has to be VERY high up. To cover the nation, it must explode in space.

Re: 7 Actions to Take Immediately Following an EMP Strike- An EMP Strike On Our Nation Will be An Absolutely Catastrophic Event
A huge EMP is like opening a Pandora Box:

1 – At a community level because we haven’t experienced one yet and we don’t really know how bad it can get. Frank Gaffney – president of the Center for Security Policy predicted that:

“Within a year of an EMP attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can’t support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity. And that is exactly what I believe the Iranians are working towards.”

Experts also agree that the next nuclear war will start with at least an EMP. If one of the nuclear powers blasts a nuclear weapon 275 miles above the US it will produce an EMP that will basically send us, the Canadian and the Mexicans back to the Dark Ages. Can we fight back (after an EMP) or we will be nothing more than sitting ducks for Russian’ nukes? I have something you need to watch. It’s much better than I am at explaining the threat.

Well...

If you draw a circle 100 miles from the center of my agricultural town, the very edge of that circle would hit one "city" of 50k people.

I think we will figure out how to support our own communities.

If all the John Deere tractors fry, the whole community will pitch in to grow our food.

Plus we have a ton of Amish, who had been living for centuries like an EMP goes off every week.

My understanding is that anything that is electric/electronic will seize up and never work again under an EMP event. Is this true?

The article states eventually power eill likely will come back on, but what good does that do a person if all appliances and cars are fried?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82049061

Not necessarily true. Small devices, not hooked up to the grid should survive. Flashlights, transistor radios. Things like cars/vehicles no one really knows. The conventional thinking is that after an EMP burst, disconnect your car battery for at least 25 minutes to allow the capacitors to drain, and the vehicle should start. In theory.

One of the best trilogies ever written about this particular subject was by William Forstchen. First book, One Second After, is the most realistic scenario that I know of happening given the state of things.

Most damn depressing shit I've ever read and that's saying a lot given what all I've had to read of the decades. I've given copies of his first book out to many people.

Anyone on meds, especially insulin, will be the first to die off. Hold on to every single thing printed - magazines, books, manuals, etc.
And thought struggles against the results, trying to avoid those unpleasant results while keeping on with that way of thinking. That is what I call 'sustained incoherence.' ...David Bohm

If there is no rocket, if some bad actor just trucked a nuclear device into Kansas, it would not be high enough in the atmosphere for a large scale EMP effect. There would be an EMP, but it would be highly localised and not nationwide.

Much more recoverable.

1> spend all the $$. it won't b any good soon
2> fill everything with water.
3> talk to the neighbors. draft em into your army and make em type a inventory for ya
4> ration food
5> dig a latrine and a grave
6> fire up the battery radio that is F'ed cause a damn EMP hit. i did not make up this list.
7> make a security plan,

#2 goes for most any disasters
#3> we are in a pandemic. that ain't smart. if u tell everyone, who will take your $$? and sell u their stuff?
#5> like going outside to dump the garbage won't attract rats and raiders both. like who has time to dig this when we are walking to stores to spend the $$? 5 gallon bucket and garbage bags b your best bet. toss em out a window, makes place look raided.

Really? hold neighborhood meetings in your garage?

Once the SHTF, your neighbors will effectively be your enemy, all competing for what little supplies and food are left. Don’t discuss supplies, rations, nothing with anyone outside of your house. Loose lips sink tight ships.

This article is dead wrong and will get you killed.

No I know about it. I'll break it down.

I need to preface first, please allow me grace.

Nuclear war race covered the biological race. No one wants to do nukes.

EMP'S, non-nuclear where specialized and certified by 1989.

Now I tell you what will happen. It doesn't matter where you live in this world now.

EMP is lunched. For the US it's six major hubs. We are talking transport hubs. East and West Coast. The Gulf is minimal.

So, first day folks on maintenance Meds will start dying. The y will create disease.

The next are the addicts. They will cause chaos. Then it's over. It won't be Hollywood and it's no make believe.

The cities will fall and the survivors will make it to the rural areas and farms to loot.

But see, understand, this will create chaos across the globe.

You will kill your own people. It's sad.

When you hear of them starting to shut down nuclear plants? you will know.

Sorry.

 Quoting: SaveUSa

Well sure, it's hardened to some extent but it certainly hasn't been updated in decades, by the military's own account. Despite the fact that hardening infrastructure, in the grand scheme of things, is relatively cheap, CONGRESS appears to be hard pressed to delegate funding for this sort of project.

And as far as any country launching an attack on us being "glass" within 30 minutes, WE ARE NOT A SUPERPOWER ANYMORE. We have nothing new under the sun to win any war with, say, Russia who STILL IS A SUPERPOWER. For its part, Russia has the most potent nuclear deterrent, at least on paper, of all states in the world including the Sarmat ICBM which has a range of 22,000 miles, allowing it to fly the long way around to its intended target, bypassing likely radar and missile defense systems and striking from unexpected directions. It can carry up to 15 nuclear warheads. Then, there is the hypersonic Zircon which travels nearly two miles per SECOND. We might not even see that one coming.

The Raytheon facility just ten miles from me is one of the biggest missile builders in the nation and employs a good portion of this city. Everyone who lives here, including myself, has known higher up engineers there as well as factory workers on the floor and we all hear the same scary stories: our arsenal is AS OLD AND AS SLOW AS IT GETS. Half of the parts ever used to build these things were and are defective and only rigged to work. This is a highly unethical and illegal practice but it happens every day at this facility and others. Moreover, if a worker or engineer speaks out, even those in QC, they risk losing their jobs, pension, etc. I have an ENGINEER friend who is eccentric but very, very smart. He was paid $300,000/year by Raytheon for fifteen years SPECIFICALLY TO CALL OUT UNETHICAL DESIGN AND MISSILE BUILDING PRACTICES and he STILL couldn't get anything done. He would call them out in meetings, write up reports about the illegalities AS HE WAS PAID TO DO, and they would essentially tell him to let it slide almost EVERY TIME. He said that for the first eight years, the job was fine, people followed the rules but then something changed during the Obama administration. He found deliberate flaws in missile designs intended to save money and his conscience weighed heavy. Finally, not wanting the liability of illegal and defective missile parts to eventually fall on his shoulders, he toyed with the idea of taking Raytheon to court but then the harassment began, people driving by his house, leaving threatening notes, cold shoulders at work, slashed tires in the Raytheon parking lot. They obviously considered him to be a whistleblower within the company EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE PAYING HIM THE BIG BUCKS TO BE THAT! The position was strictly for show! It was a scary time. Somehow, in the middle of this, Honeywell Aerospace came around offering him even MORE money for the SAME POSITION and Raytheon was elated and gave him a huge severance to go. The harassment stopped. My friend knew this was a set-up because why would Honeywell suddenly come around?? His theory was that they made a deal with Honeywell which is a much smaller facility rather than fire him and REALLY piss him off. He knows too much. So he went and lo-and-behold THE SAME THING HAPPENS. So, he has mellowed in what he calls out and what he doesn't. Here and there, Raytheon will call him over for other projects and pay him BANK and my friend knows this is simply to check on him and make sure he isn't talking. He is a very quiet dude now. The whole experience changed him. That's America for ya!!

I'm sure my friend's experience isn't unique because this is what America does and our weapon defense system surely reflects this.

But please, if you can prove me wrong, please do so. I have no problem with that. I want to be wrong.

I don’t believe EMP’s exist. I think it’s just being used as an excuse to flip the off switch on the power grid and the same with the computer chips in motor vehicles.

Either way...the results would be the same. Society would crumble and many would die.

You know what?
The funny and curious thing is, right now, how would you tell that society had crumbled?
Piles of drug needles in the streets of cities?
Homeless camps under every major highway?
Foreign invaders by the millions coming in?

What if there is an EMP with no obvious outside source? You know, one just goes off in kansas or something like that, with no rocket approaching from outside the nation's borders?

I've been told by people that should know, that the radiation signature from any nuke can be easily traced back to the country that made it.

Maybe someone here can verify that one way or the other. I am not a nuclear scientist.

Our response infrastructure is hardened against that, which is why it’ll never happen. The country launching that level of attack would be glass within 30 mins after. Certainly the leadership of same at least.

More doom theater.

Everything is hardened to 50,000 volts/meter. Super EMP, which we know China and Russia have been working on, can produce as much as 250,000 volts/meter.

Most everything with any circuitry will be fried, including military coms.

Everybody on dialysis.
Everybody with battery operated medical devices like pace makers.
Everybody on any drug to sustain life...as mentioned...insulin or cardiac drugs, etc.

and then most of the mental health drugs will drive people off the cliff with suicides. etc.
