Re: 7 Actions to Take Immediately Following an EMP Strike- An EMP Strike On Our Nation Will be An Absolutely Catastrophic Event
One of the best trilogies ever written about this particular subject was by William Forstchen. First book, One Second After, is the most realistic scenario that I know of happening given the state of things.

Most damn depressing shit I've ever read and that's saying a lot given what all I've had to read of the decades. I've given copies of his first book out to many people.

Anyone on meds, especially insulin, will be the first to die off. Hold on to every single thing printed - magazines, books, manuals, etc.
 Quoting: Deplorable Zenobia

Everybody on dialysis.
Everybody with battery operated medical devices like pace makers.
Everybody on any drug to sustain life...as mentioned...insulin or cardiac drugs, etc.

and then most of the mental health drugs will drive people off the cliff with suicides. etc.
 Quoting: 26Degrees

I've been thinking about how to save the people who are dependant on insulin or other refrigerated drugs.

There is a different kind of refrigeration cycle called the absorption cycle that uses heat to operate it. There are versions that use no electricity that were used on old sailing ships. Just operate a heat source like a small kerosene burner at one part of it, and keep the other part as cool as possible in the air or maybe with some cool water etc.

There are also industrial versions of it. (I designed and installed a 400 ton chiller on a cogen plant many years ago. (it was sort of required back then for PURPA certification).

I think there are also small fridges that run on propane for travel trailers and RVs. (used to be anyway).

If I had a family member whose life depended on insulin, I would try to obtain one of these units and operate it a while to make sure you know how to operate it and to identify any bugs in the system.

There's always the Venturi effect. Compress any gas through a smaller opening and it chills...

Compressed air vehicles, at the turn of the 20th century, had a basket in the back for food to be chilled from the vehicle's air exhaust...

An EMP strike would permanently obliterate the nation's electrical & power infrastructure, there'd be no point in encasing your electronic gadgets in faraday cages or tinfoil envelopes.

Let's work on building peace & remembering we're ALL 1, & ONE PEOPLE so MAYBE the answer is in preventing other Nations from wanting to launch a first strike, second, or third strike on us?!

Peace heads, NOT warheads!!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82435178

Actually there would be a reason. Especially with a HAM radio, or a satellite radio, or these days, just a laptop that can communicate via Starlink satellites.

The parts needed to repair a power plant might be something that could be ordered from a company on a distant part of the Earth unaffected by the EMP.
 Quoting: JustmeTX

True, but there wouldn't be Fedex or any freight being delivered to any plant if an EMP occurred in the area. They would have to fly it in then delivered by chopper.

What if there is an EMP with no obvious outside source? You know, one just goes off in kansas or something like that, with no rocket approaching from outside the nation's borders?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82571668

I've been told by people that should know, that the radiation signature from any nuke can be easily traced back to the country that made it.

Maybe someone here can verify that one way or the other. I am not a nuclear scientist.
 Quoting: JustmeTX

Is there a little pocket kit I can carry on me? So when that 100 mega ton nuke goes off I will immediately know who sent it!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81967693

Re: 7 Actions to Take Immediately Following an EMP Strike- An EMP Strike On Our Nation Will be An Absolutely Catastrophic Event
Our response infrastructure is hardened against that, which is why it’ll never happen. The country launching that level of attack would be glass within 30 mins after. Certainly the leadership of same at least.

More doom theater.
 Quoting: SaveUSa

Well sure, it's hardened to some extent but it certainly hasn't been updated in decades, by the military's own account. Despite the fact that hardening infrastructure, in the grand scheme of things, is relatively cheap, appears to be hard pressed to delegate funding for this sort of project.

And as far as any country launching an attack on us being "glass" within 30 minutes, WE ARE NOT A SUPERPOWER ANYMORE. We have nothing new under the sun to win any war with, say, Russia who STILL IS A SUPERPOWER. For its part, Russia has the most potent nuclear deterrent, at least on paper, of all states in the world including the Sarmat ICBM which has a range of 22,000 miles, allowing it to fly the long way around to its intended target, bypassing likely radar and missile defense systems and striking from unexpected directions. It can carry up to 15 nuclear warheads. Then, there is the hypersonic Zircon which travels nearly two miles per SECOND. We might not even see that one coming.

The Raytheon facility just ten miles from me is one of the biggest missile builders in the nation and employs a good portion of this city. Everyone who lives here, including myself, has known higher up engineers there as well as factory workers on the floor and we all hear the same scary thing: our arsenal is AS OLD AND AS SLOW AS IT GETS. Half of the parts ever used to build these things were and are defective and only rigged to work. This is a highly unethical and illegal practice but it happens every day at this facility and others. Moreover, if a worker or engineer speaks out, even those in QC, they risk losing their jobs, pension, etc. I have an ENGINEER friend who is eccentric but very, very smart. He was paid $300,000/year by Raytheon for fifteen years SPECIFICALLY TO CALL OUT UNETHICAL DESIGN AND MISSILE BUILDING PRACTICES and he STILL couldn't get anything done. He would call them out in meetings, write up reports about the illegalities AS HE WAS PAID TO DO, and they would essentially tell him to let it slide almost EVERY TIME. He said that for the first eight years, the job was fine, people followed the rules but then something changed during the Obama administration. He found deliberate flaws in missile designs intended to save money and his conscience weighed heavy. Finally, not wanting the liability of illegal and defective missile parts to eventually fall on his shoulders, he toyed with the idea of taking Raytheon to court but then the harassment began, people driving by his house, leaving threatening notes, cold shoulders at work, slashed tires in the Raytheon parking lot. They obviously considered him to be a whistleblower within the company EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE PAYING HIM THE BIG BUCKS TO BE THAT! The position was strictly for show! It was a scary time. Somehow, in the middle of this, Honeywell Aerospace came around offering him even MORE money for the SAME POSITION and Raytheon was elated and gave him a huge severance to go. The harassment stopped. My friend knew this was a set-up because why would Honeywell suddenly come around?? His theory was that they made a deal with Honeywell which is a much smaller facility rather than fire him and REALLY piss him off. He knows too much. So he went and lo-and-behold THE SAME THING HAPPENS. So, he has mellowed in what he calls out and what he doesn't. Here and there, Raytheon will call him over for other projects and pay him BANK and my friend knows this is simply to check on him and make sure he isn't talking. He is a very quiet dude now. The whole experience changed him. That's America for ya!!

I'm sure my friend's experience isn't unique because this is what America does and our weapon defense system surely reflects this.

But please, if you can prove me wrong, please do so. I have no problem with that. I want to be wrong.
 Quoting: TheExPatrioticGirl

THIS GUY IS SOOOO RIGHT!!!!

This type crap/threats/harrassment happens in all types of industries that the govt either openly or covertly controls.

Seen it ourselves in our family's work situations.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74536007

It sure does. We hung out for years so I watched it go from good to bad. Even though he made an enormous salary, he lived in a regular neighborhood in a regular house, drove an F-150, never bothered anyone. He was a different kind of dude but super smart which is why Raytheon kept him on. He didn't even have a cell phone, just a landline. I would bring him food sometimes and let him talk what was happening. At a certain point during the harassment, he told me that he didn't want me coming by because he didn't know how far they would take it. When I argued about that, he told me he wouldn't answer the door to ANYONE and to just let him be. The harassment got so bad that he would pull his landline out the wall unless he needed to use it. He was never the same even after he went to Honeywell. I'm fairly certain things happened that he didn't tell me. His dog, who would be outside in the dog run for most of the day, died unexpectedly in the middle of it and I always wondered about that too.
It's all fun & games until the Dogman stands up

It doesn't matter if some government systems are harneded, the refineries, oil production, entire shipping a manufacturing systems, hospitals, financial systems...etc are all vulnerable. You stop the trucks for three days and you'll see looting a rioting that third night, and the beginning of collapse at the end of the week with tens of millions dead in the first month and a hundred or two hundred million dead after 6 months to a year. The rest of the world would actually probably prosper after they rebuild the financial sector.

Destroy the shipping ports, destroy the refineries and knock out the power, wait a few months and walk right in.

If there is no rocket, if some bad actor just trucked a nuclear device into Kansas, it would not be high enough in the atmosphere for a large scale EMP effect. There would be an EMP, but it would be highly localised and not nationwide.

Much more recoverable.

What if a crazy American shot a rocket up into the air in Kansas and set off an EMP? We wouldn't know about it until after it went off.

With our luck, mass shootings will be replaced with EMP rockets.

Geez. I can't believe I just thought that out loud....you know the world has gone crazy when you think of these things and it seem perfectly normal.

 Quoting: JustmeTX

My grandmothers 1st fridge ran on propane. I think it was around 1930ish. In my parents 1st home, the central A/C was run off natural gas. For some strange reason (you might know???) it required 3 phase power, yes, 3 transformers on the power pole coming to the house.
 Quoting: Watdhel

If memory serves, there might be a couple tiny pumps in it.
One chamber runs in a Deep vaccuum and one at a somewhat normal pressure. It has a section that boils a salt solution like LiBr (or ammonia) , then condenses it back to water.
The water is then pumped and sprayed into the deep vaccuum chamber where it chills from the expansion is then recombined with the rich salt solution and pumped back to the other chamber. Something like that.
But for the very old sailing ships, like when guys were first sailing around the world in small sailboats, they would write about their refrigeration unit.
There is a book by a famous English sailing gent (whose name I am trying to recall), I have his book around somewhere, where he describes the one he had on his boat. He said all it needed was a small paraffin flame to operate. (What we call kerosene)

Re: 7 Actions to Take Immediately Following an EMP Strike- An EMP Strike On Our Nation Will be An Absolutely Catastrophic Event
A huge EMP is like opening a Pandora Box:

1 – At a community level because we haven’t experienced one yet and we don’t really know how bad it can get. Frank Gaffney – president of the Center for Security Policy predicted that:

“Within a year of an EMP attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can’t support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity. And that is exactly what I believe the Iranians are working towards.”

Experts also agree that the next nuclear war will start with at least an EMP. If one of the nuclear powers blasts a nuclear weapon 275 miles above the US it will produce an EMP that will basically send us, the Canadian and the Mexicans back to the Dark Ages. Can we fight back (after an EMP) or we will be nothing more than sitting ducks for Russian’ nukes? I have something you need to watch. It’s much better than I am at explaining the threat.

Destroy the shipping ports, destroy the refineries and knock out the power, wait a few months and walk right in.

bump it would be a matter of several days before nuclear power plants would be blowing up due to no way to cool the fuel rod’s
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76305675

If that were to happen, the rods would be pulled from within the cluster used to commercially run the power station, and permanently added to a lake or nearby ocean water supply. Hundreds of tons of various levels of nuclear waste have been dumped in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. The US energy departments had a habit of keeping very few records, if any, of where exactly it was dumped. Quite a contrast to modern times, though.

What happened to Chernobyl was it is a graphite pile, which caught fire. Similarly, an experimental nuclear facility at Oak Ridge is also a graphite pile. It's a neat place. They even have a retired nuclear battery running a lighthouse beacon in their museum; supposed to be able to run for hundreds of years. I guess it all depends on how long the light-bulb lasts.

Something similar to an EMP is needing to protect an electric fence. I use a section of spring gate as a lightning choke between the electric fence and the fence charger. For some reason lightning can't negotiate a large 2" coil of wire.

Other lessons on food preservation have happened to me after a refrigerator failed and I wasn't able to have enough space to put it in another refrigerator or freezer. There's a lot of food that doesn't really need refrigeration, such as lidded buckets of venison dog meat; just keep it in a cool dark place. Dogs have really short digestive systems, that are designed to process rotten meat. Besides, flies cannot negotiate being in the dark, which is why it's best to process or butcher meat after dark, because it minimizes flies contaminating everything.

Found a good option on pressure canning milk, this morning, and thought I'd share it here:
