User ID: 77624304 United States 03/02/2023 11:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'll start. If you're going to raise chickens make the pen with welded wire NOT chicken wire. It is a lot tougher and foxes can't chew through it. Make the sides 6 foot tall and run bailing wire back and forth across the top about 6 inches apart. This will prevent hawks from being able to get in from the air. Dig a 4 inch wide trench 6 inches deep around the bottom of the fence and fill it with cement. This will keep predators from digging under. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85369722 Never use chicken wire as a line of last defense especially up to the 2 foot mark from the ground; Welded wire is no better. Hardware Cloth A coon has a 7 inch reach and can easily kill a chicken inside the run that gets within that 7 inches. The trench around the run is not necessary and a lot of unnecessary work as well. Instead, as a second outside barrier up to the 2 foot mark, use chicken wire, about 3 foot high. Affix the Chicken Wire to the 1st line of defense (Hardware Cloth, 1/2 inch, 1/4, 1/8, don't matter). After the 2 feet of chicken wire is affixed, there will be 1 foot left at the base of the ground. Simply 90 Degree that foot of wire AWAY from the Run. Place Pea Stone on top, anything to make it not visible. Coons and such are NOT smart enough to attempt tunneling under 1 foot of cover chichen wire. We've had no known attempts at the run in from the outside in 3 years. We tapped into our Well with a 125 foot trench, 4 foot down (Frost, sux) and we have water with a special valve to avoid freezing above ground level. We have 20 Reds. Cool, thanks! Also, it's nice to have about 1/3 of the nesting boxes vs the herd, example: 25 original chix, 5 die, leaving 20, and you have 8 boxes, perfect. The chickens tend to pick a favorite box en masse, said simpler, when we get 20 eggs this summer, their will NOT be an egg in every one of the 8 boxes, 1 box might have as many as 5. It's also a good benefit to get the same breed, no mixing, they fight less, etc. Reds are very docile, grow the biggest and lay some damn big eggs once in a while. Inside the coup, attempt 3 sq feet per bird. 24 birds, 72 square feet, which is what we have. In the Run, attempt 8 sq feet per bird. We have 216 sq feet. For the 20 that survived, that's almost 11 sq feet per bird, and some birds will stay in the coup, sometimes to lay an egg, other times bc they, like people, just want to get away from the other sqwaking idiots. You can't have enough perches either. I'm not saying to over do it, but if you make a new perch on the level, they will eventually investigate it, keeps some off the ground as well. As for the 'roof' of the run, the top portion. We have Giant Owls, Hawks, Buzzards, Crows, the rare Eagle, etc. We went with hardware wire, 2 inch by 3 inch and tied that in with the 3 walls (4th wall is the coup outer wall that the chickens get let out into the run from, I think we used U Nails for the affix on that part. You can also you a Decent Tensile Strength Rated Fishing Line and CrissCross the top with it. I wouldn't feel comfortable with 4 inch gaps. Coons can climb the 6 foot fencing and dive bomb to the floor for some major carnage. However, we put our chickens in Every Night, and they are watched if we leave during the day. Last thing I can think of, although there are other tricks of the trade when it comes to water and feed, is to familiarize yourself with the approximately 15 Foods NOT to feed your chickens. They'll eat anything, including each other. Let me know if you want pics for ideas. Our coup cost 2K in material cost and labor a few years ago, would be a lot more for the treated now. Oh, and for the outside run fencing, I went with treated star bit screws and washers that I pinned the wire to the wood with. I just had a ridiculous amount of washers (left behind by previous owner) STILL in my Tool Trays from a house I had in the mid 90's. As far as my credentials, I grew up in rural MI in the early to mid 70s with 75 Meat Birds. They were not so fun. Last Edited by ranjmaz on 03/02/2023 11:58 PM |

We used to have 4 hens and would get 3-5 eggs a day. At 6 bux a dozen it should be worth it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85379052 Uhm, chix were $3 a couple of years ago at TSC, and $5 this year, at $21 each for fulls, I'd take a hard pass. You were getting MORE than 1 egg in 1 day from a Hen? For Realz? |
