My Mom "throws stuff around". Is that a normal thing for old people to do?

Maybe she is just trying to save steps like from a bad hip or knee? Reduce steps or motion on the bad joint.When I injured my knee and hip the refrigerator door would open back up after closing it. I'd try to slam it back closed from the sink to not put weight on my injury. It was the challenge how easy you could swing the door to have it close gently. Worst case things could fall out of frig door AND swing open even wider. Get her one of those grabber sticks. Steroid shot in knee saved the day wit seroid dosepack. Maybe she could go to gymn and sauna,hot tub and walk in pool things to get her core strength back.Macha smoothies ,ginger teas, quercetin, horny goat weed with maca, also the mushroom coffee with lions mane and cordioceps.Black cherries or juice. Call your physical therapy department and see what this describes. After I got the steroid knee shot I quit entertaining myself avoiding getting up and down and steps.You could stick a kid basketball hoop over the trash can to help her aim better.lol.

is she alone down there ?? ...do you ever go down to talk or invite here up ??...the ONE THING the elderly need is communication ...and to get out of the house....

you know in movies how those is jail who to bang the cups against the bars ...yeah...its like that...take to an adult rec center .....just happen to stop by when she riding with on errands ...when she sees the other elderly playing cars talking ......yea..being born is a lonely experience ...leaving life is even lonelier.. very least movies they watch in their younger years...usually cowboy or war movies

but in the end the reality of the finality looms large....
and regret ...your only companion...all you've ever done is all you'll ever do....young people hear me ...smell my loaded pamper...no go forth mindfully

i wish my Mom was slamming things around within my earshot, i'd go and talk to her.

It very well could be early onset dementia, my gramma would do stuff like that in the beginning of her diagnosis.
But I’m not a doctor and not giving medical advice so yeah just my experience

Have you talked to your mom, asked her why she’s slamming things?
I’m not trying to be personal just genuinely asking.

I wish you the best, I’ve cared for many family members and it is not easy but at least your mom and stepdad have you.

Lots of people of any age don't. Of if they did, they don't any more.

OP, she has a problem. Could be a urinary tract infection, could be budding dementia, could be a lifetime of being nice is not fun any longer.

I have a sister like this.

When she's at my dad's house to cook a meal, everything gets slammed. Everything.

From another room it sounds like a very active civil war re-enactment. cabinet doors, garbage can lid, setting the table, cooking utensils, the front door, the back door, my dad's walker, absolutely every fucking thing cannot just be set down. It has to be slammed down.

I've called her out on it and she says "it's just my nature, I guess".

She has no idea how much it stresses everyone else out, because it very much feels like someone is very angry and acting out on it. She swears she's not mad, just busy.

Guess it's okay... I mean, it's not poo is it? That's probably not okay.

Oh, I left out the yelling.

She typically cannot just discuss things with an "inside voice". It has to be at a yell, like she's trying to talk over loud machines or something.

It's all quite stressful, since I tend to be a very quiet person.

Not an Aquarian, and cooks ok, but almost nothing from scratch.

There are many things I know about dementia to change things but it all depends.

What drugs is she on? Stations?

Statins? Cholesterol pills?

I hated living with stompers and door slammers.

Some otherwise nice people just go around stomping and slamming doors with no self awareness that they are even doing it.

I can sort of understand. Getting old is intensely annoying. Little things don't work as well. Getting dressed or undressed is painful. Reading the medicine bottle, IMPOSSIBLE. Add to that the fact that the world itself is way more annoying then when currently old people were young. Packaging impossible to open, didn't used to be that way. Cell phones and being forced to do everything on them, very annoying. Web user interfaces mostly suck compared to Apple 1989. I sincerely mean that. Apple was way more fun to use in 1989 than Chrome is today. Getting hacked, that never happened. Traffic is worse with all the crappy drivers from other countries.

So you have the annoyances of age synergizing with increasing annoyance of life generally, and door slamming ensues.

Also, P.S., I have an old dog. And he's always pissed off about something. He snaps at the other dogs, he barks at the clouds, he follows me around and whines if I go out of sight. Kind of similar.

You can try to ease her pain I suppose, or ... just put up with it. Why are you living in the same house with her anyway? Freeloading? Maybe she's ticked off about that.
Least you can do is pay her rent and/or do some stuff for her.

Perhaps she's angry that her grown arse granddaughter is living with her and taking advantage of her.

Maybe it's a hint that you need to get a life?

She is obviously angry. Honestly why are you still living there if she is old you clearly are too, get on with your own life & stop trying to control hers or clean up after yourself if she really wants you to be there for some reason.
