I am excited about the prospects of this election, not only due to Obama.. but also because following this election, the GOP will surely conclude it has no choice but to evolve or fade away completely.

Given a choice between Obama and John McCain, those independents, libertarians and conservatives in my circle, all claim that they will be voting for Obama. I wager a landslide is in the making.

The GOP deserves to lose. They should have backed Ron Paul! I'd saying unless some really good stuff comes out about O'bama he has it in the bag.

Socialism?

Obama wants to invest in education. Do you really think that this country can compete in a global economy without world class education?

Investment in science and research, which is required if the US is to maintain a technological lead.

That's basically Obama's plan. More or less.

 Quoting: lurker 18243

Do you have any idea what is being taught in higher education? Do you have any idea as to how well prepared the incoming freshmen are?

Foreign students make up a good portion of those enrolled in science and engineering.

Obama will only further the lowering of standards in all levels of our educational system.........Ray

If you want what your hearing from Obama then you should vote with consistence rather than be guided by speculations that may or may not have any basis in reality.

I am far, far more afraid of McCain's clearly demonstrated political wishy-washiness and flip-flopping, than wild speculations about Obama.

I have stated many times over the past year.., there is one way and one way ONLY, that I will vote with my party this election.

Todays spin from the GOP
...

August 29, 2008

MORNING UPDATE:

MCCAIN VP PICK...is due out today around 11:00am. There was unbelievable speculation, theories and conjecture throughout the evening...but nothing more.

OBAMA'S SPEECH...the speech is over, the fireworks have faded and the Democratic National Convention is over, but the fact that Barack Obama lacks the experience and temperament to be this country's commander in chief remains unchanged.

Obama attacked McCain, rather than laying out his vision for America. Why, because he's short on specifics, long on rhetoric and the race is closer than anyone expected. We all expected a great delivery...done...but we thought we would get something more...didn't happen.

Senator Obama's lofty rhetoric sits in stark contrast to his meager record. Despite all his talk, Senator Obama still opposes letting America drill for America's oil to decrease our dependence on foreign oil. Senator Obama voted to increase taxes for people making a little as $45,000 a year. And, Senator Obama has the audacity to say he would give our service men and women the equipment they need when he voted to cut off all funds for our troops in harm's way. If this is Senator Obama's idea of the change we need, he can keep it.
...

Sorry kids... that dog won't hunt anymore. America wants reality TV.... not Fantasy Island reruns and squabbling siblings.
Yes it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it....

MSNBC's Chris Matthews and others were talking about ANY campaign taking the huge risk of hosting a political acceptance speech in such a huge stadium, and Matthews just said Obama's popularity completely filled the stadium with 80,000 people while McCain is having trouble getting 10,000 to his VP announcement.

You asked whether I had any idea about higher education? Well, yeah, my daughter is a Senior at Northwestern right now. My niece is in medical school. My brother teaches at the college level.

You've proven my point with your comments about foreign students, however. Without further investment and serious focus on education, foreign students may be the only ones qualified to attend college in this country.

But where on earth did you get the notion that Obama would further diminish the educational system in this country? Judging by his own educational background and that of his wife, the fact that he obviously values education, and his stated policies, I would think that he intends to upgrade our system in any way he can.

It seems to me that you have leapt to an illogical conclusion based on some vague awareness of Republican "talking points" of the past. Gotta' watch that. Republican "talking points" have infested, infected and affected the public psyche for decades -- quite deliberately, by design.

He wants to do all these Marxist things yet lower taxes on 95% of Americans. Talk about a basic lack of understanding of economics.

He will not tell us HOW he is going to do anything. How can you people be so blind?

When he raises corporate taxes and raises all our personal taxes by eliminating the Bush tax cuts that affect almost EVERYONE here, effectively raising taxes everywhere, capital is going to flee this county, lowering tax revenues. Higher taxes on businesses will choke the economy.

Godot, I agree with you that Ron Paul should have been on the Republican ticket, but that doesn't negate the fact that there is NO WAY Obama can deliver what he has promised without making SWEEPING changes that will not set well with people, once they understand what they will mean, as they are implemented. Our country is in deep, deep doo-doo no matter who wins. God help us all in these trying times.

There will be NO good times from now on. Jesus said "THERE WILL BE WAR 'TIL THE END." And that we will go through a time such as never has been nor will be again.

We will have an Obama/Clinton administration that will lead us where we don't want to go. What they say sounds good, but we all know they are liars from the beginning. Trust no man, especially those with an agenda.

I disagree with your view. As I see it, the dishonest politician entrenched in this upcoming election is McCain, and by proxy, the party mechanism that is supporting him. If there is an agenda being supported by Obama it seems to me to be an American one. The McCain/Duncan agenda seems to be Haliburton and Blackwater uber alis.

Family ties: Candidates' ancestry makes for strange bedfellows

(CNN) -- Perhaps, now the candidates will play nice.

For all their insistence on how unlike they are from one another, the three U.S. presidential candidates share some noteworthy family connections, the New England Historic Genealogical Society has found.

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, who has made his opposition to the Iraq war a linchpin of his campaign, is distantly related not only to President George W. Bush but also to another wartime leader -- former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Because of his shared ancestry with President Bush, Obama is also indirectly related to his rival on the Republican side, Sen. John McCain.

McCain, it turns out, is a sixth cousin of First Lady Laura Bush.

Meanwhile, Sen. Hillary Clinton, is related to beatnik author Jack Kerouac, Canadian Prime Minster Pierre Trudeau and Camilla Parker-Bowles, wife of Prince Charles of England.

Clinton also shares ancestors with Grammy Award-winning singers Celine Dion and Madonna.

The senator won a Best Spoken Word Grammy for the audio version of her book, "It Takes a Village." Rival Obama also snagged one in the same category for his book "The Audacity of Hope."

Conservatives who sometimes accuse Democrats of being in bed with liberal Hollywood elites may have been handed one more round of ammunition by the Society's findings.

Clinton, the Society said, is related to Angelina Jolie. And Obama is related to Jolie's boyfriend Brad Pitt.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society, founded in 1845, says it is the oldest such organization in the country. Members spent three years tracing the lineage of the candidates.

Among its other findings:

McCain, the Vietnam War veteran who spent five years as a prisoner of war, descends from a long line of kings: Scottish King William the Lion, English King Edward I and French King Louis VII.

Obama, the son of a white woman from Kansas and a black man from Kenya, is "related to millions of contemporary Americans - perhaps even a significant percentage of the population," the researchers said.

He is cousins with six U.S presidents, including Lyndon Johnson, Harry Truman and Gerald Ford. He is also linked to American artist Georgia O'Keefe, the Duchess of Windsor and two men who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Most surprisingly, Obama -- the man who could become America's first African-American president -- is linked by ancestry to Robert E. Lee, who commanded the armies of the Southern slave-holding states during the American civil war.

Bedfellows, it turns out, make for strange politics.
