Re: Cooper Nuclear Station in Nebraska is operating AT FULL CAPACITY..partial levee breach three miles upriver
Of course if one of the huge storage dams upstream in the Dakotas or Montana (which are overflowing now) break, it would be like a tsunami all the way down to the Mississippi River. One big dam breakage would break all the dams below that one.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1411283

IF one dam broke upstream the levies downstream would more than likely go before a dam would fail.

Levee near Nebraska’s Cooper nuke plant “about to break” and “at risk of washing away completely” after being overtopped Sunday

You have no idea just how BIG the Ft. Peck dam is huh?

The Fort Peck Dam is the highest of six major dams along the Missouri River, located in northeast Montana in the United States, near Glasgow, and adjacent to the community of Fort Peck. At 21,026 feet (6,409 m) in length and over 250 feet (76 m) in height, it is the largest hydraulically filled dam in the United States, and creates Fort Peck Lake, the fifth largest man-made lake in the U.S., more than 130 miles long, 200 feet deep, and it has a 1,520 mile shoreline which is longer than the state of California's coastline.

The real fear is a possibility of even a slight tremor around ft peck dam. That would cause immediate liquifaction and collapse. Is there a greater chance of a tremor. Yes, why, because of all the extra weight of the water in the area. If you are downstream of that dam, you better learn to swim.

Forbes is confirming that the plant is operating at full capacity today

(snip)

The river is expected to rise as much as 5 to 7 feet above flood stage in much of Nebraska and Iowa and as much as 10 feet over flood stage in parts of Missouri. The corps predicts the river will remain that high until at least August.

Becker said the river rose to 900.56 feet at Brownville on Sunday, then dropped to 900.4 feet later in the day and remained at that level Monday morning. The National Weather Service said the Missouri River set a new record Sunday at Brownville when its depth was measured at 44.4 feet. That topped the record of 44.3 feet set during the 1993 flooding.

The Cooper Nuclear Plant is operating at full capacity Monday, Becker said.

"... Total insanity that Fukushima was allowed to start up and run for 40 years with nobody noticing all of the Engineering errors!

American plants are engineered better than that. Well, at least we hope so..."
 Quoting: JoeNeubarth

Engineers are engineers. Don't count on US engineers being better than Japanese engineers!!

Change the assumptions around just a bit underneath the surface ... and volia, an engineer can justify doing just about anything.

Of note with regards to both the Cooper and Fort Calhoun nuclear power plants and their current flooding issues:

The Gavins Point Dam was designed to release up to 584,000 cf/s and is currently releasing ONLY abou 1/4 of that amount, ie: 150,000 cf/s (and that release rate slug won't hit the power plants for another 3 to 4 days or so). IF the power plants have problems NOW ... how would they fare under a full dam release situation?

------------------

[link to nathanvjohnson.wordpress.com]

QUESTION: How much water can be released at Gavins Point Dam?

ANSWER: If the spillway gates were opened to capacity at the (Gavins Point) dam, the release would be 584,000 cubic feet per second (cfs).

Gavins Point Operations Project Manager Dave Becker puts that in perspective: “If you’re watching the Yankton Bucks, 584,000 cfs would put 13.4 feet of water on a football field every second.”

There is a good reason the dam was built for that capacity, he said.

“During the flood of 1952, Yankton had a flow of 480,000 cfs,” Becker stated. “We need to have the capability to release very high flows in the event of an extreme flood.”

With the floodwaters licking at the edges of the plant now, does that mean that the Missouri River is having a million-year flood event?

Both nuclear plants in Nebraska are designed to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.0.

Fort Calhoun is built to withstand winds up to 500 mph and a 1,000-year flood, Bannister said.

My point is that it is the same type of plant and how odd that the folks from these same two plants were chosen to assist with Fukishima and now these two plants are in danger of the flood waters and power issues.

Re: Cooper Nuclear Station in Nebraska is operating AT FULL CAPACITY..partial levee breach three miles upriver
Fort Calhoun has six high power lines feeding it - some coming off of a high hill adjacent that comes into the plant at a high angle (hence the no fly zone). Any one of those lines intact will fully power the cooling pools (per the press report in Council Bluffs IA newspaper). They also have generators and onsite fuel to last longer than a month. As to water they have several systems including sophisticated (flood proof) giant sandbags and a "water dam" that could hold back twice the current flood level. So baring a tsunami from a dam break all is well - IMO. They got their asses handed to them a year ago on the flood preps they had so they had been working on it all year - very providential. Don't believe all of the spin out in the blogosphere - I drive by the plant on my way into work every day and live downwind of the plant and have rad detectors - everything has been normal so far.

Yes, I took your point on that as well. As I read the article I thought it an extremely odd coincidence that the two US plants in trouble were the ones sending help to Fukushima. But I saw that the article was posted on March 15, well before the flooding, and wrote it off as just that, a coincidence.

Yeah but your looking at that ALL WRONG. See thats wrong laws of physics they teach in schools. Not the laws of physics where fire can melt steel and buildings can freefall straight down at the rate of gravity and can make un damaged buildings a block away fall down because of sympathy pains. <snipped>

I'm confused by your post....

1. Didn't the fact that the two companies asked to assist at Fukishima are responsible for the two Nuclear plants in question at this time?

snip> NPPD has been involved in daily conference calls, along with top officials from Entergy Nuclear Inc., the company that operates Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville in Southeast Nebraska.

OPPD owns and operates Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station about 19 miles north of Omaha. Both nuclear plants were built in the 1970s and are on the Missouri River.

2. The article states that the plants both have the same designs. Yes they are saying the two Nebraska plants are upgraded, but who knows the truth.
