Cooper Nuclear Station in Nebraska is operating AT FULL CAPACITY..partial levee breach three miles upriver

Of course if one of the huge storage dams upstream in the Dakotas or Montana (which are overflowing now) break, it would be like a tsunami all the way down to the Mississippi River. One big dam breakage would break all the dams below that one.

The river is expected to rise as much as 5 to 7 feet above flood stage in much of Nebraska and Iowa and as much as 10 feet over flood stage in parts of Missouri. The corps predicts the river will remain that high until at least August.

Becker said the river rose to 900.56 feet at Brownville on Sunday, then dropped to 900.4 feet later in the day and remained at that level Monday morning. The National Weather Service said the Missouri River set a new record Sunday at Brownville when its depth was measured at 44.4 feet. That topped the record of 44.3 feet set during the 1993 flooding.

The Cooper Nuclear Plant is operating at full capacity Monday, Becker said.

With the floodwaters licking at the edges of the plant now, does that mean that the Missouri River is having a million-year flood event?

Fort Calhoun has six high power lines feeding it - some coming off of a high hill adjacent that comes into the plant at a high angle (hence the no fly zone). Any one of those lines intact will fully power the cooling pools (per the press report in Council Bluffs IA newspaper). They also have generators and onsite fuel to last longer than a month. As to water they have several systems including sophisticated (flood proof) giant sandbags and a "water dam" that could hold back twice the current flood level. So baring a tsunami from a dam break all is well - IMO. They got their asses handed to them a year ago on the flood preps they had so they had been working on it all year - very providential. Don't believe all of the spin out in the blogosphere - I drive by the plant on my way into work every day and live downwind of the plant and have rad detectors - everything has been normal so far.

My point is that it is the same type of plant and how odd that the folks from these same two plants were chosen to assist with Fukishima and now these two plants are in danger of the flood waters and power issues.

Yeah but your looking at that ALL WRONG. See thats wrong laws of physics they teach in schools. Not the laws of physics where fire can melt steel and buildings can freefall straight down at the rate of gravity and can make un damaged buildings a block away fall down because of sympathy pains. <snipped>
