THE RIVER AT BROWNVILLE CURRENTLY IS AROUND 44.4 FEET... SETTING A NEW RECORD AROUND 830 AM SUNDAY MORNING JUNE 19. RELEASES FROM GAVINS POINT DAM IN NORTHEAST NEBRASKA HAVE REACHED 150 KCFS AND ARE FORECAST TO REMAIN AT THIS LEVEL FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. For any given watershed drainage of X amount of drainage (in acre feet) then the river WILL RUN HIGHER today than it would have done in days of old. Look for the PROJECTED river forecast levels to be UNDERSTATED when it comes to maximum flood height throughout this flood situation. |

One big dam breakage would break all the dams below that one. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1408667With the "channeling" that has been done to the Missouri River (it is now 200+ miles shorter than it was in 1900) a HIGHER percentage of the water going downriver is going to be utilizing the river channel itself and trying to do it all at once. User ID: 1436496 United States 06/20/2011 08:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Re: Cooper Nuclear Station in Nebraska is operating AT FULL CAPACITY..partial levee breach three miles upriver Fort Calhoun has six high power lines feeding it - some coming off of a high hill adjacent that comes into the plant at a high angle (hence the no fly zone). Any one of those lines intact will fully power the cooling pools (per the press report in Council Bluffs IA newspaper). They also have generators and onsite fuel to last longer than a month. As to water they have several systems including sophisticated (flood proof) giant sandbags and a "water dam" that could hold back twice the current flood level. So baring a tsunami from a dam break all is well - IMO. They got their asses handed to them a year ago on the flood preps they had so they had been working on it all year - very providential. Don't believe all of the spin out in the blogosphere - I drive by the plant on my way into work every day and live downwind of the plant and have rad detectors - everything has been normal so far. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1435398yes an when the water comes to the top of the windows, they have specially trained divers to operate the plant Okay...that was funny! and a good point! :) "The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in From this time forth and forever." ~Psalm 121:7-8 "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May they prosper who love you." ~Psalm 122:6 "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart." - Psalm 91:1-4 |

Quoting: RTSthank you for your cooperation (snip) Meanwhile, in Nebraska, the flooding alert issued by the Nebraska Public Power District for the Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville, Neb., didn't stop the plant from operating at full capacity Sunday. The Fort Calhoun Station, another nuclear plant along the Missouri River in eastern Nebraska, issued a similar alert June 6. That plant near Blair, Neb., has been shut down since April and will not be reactivated until the flooding subsides. (scroll to bottom of the article) [link to www.kmbc.com] Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) is a boiling water reactor (BWR) type nuclear power plant located on a 1,251-acre (5.1 km²) site near Brownville, Nebraska. It is the largest single-unit electrical generator in Nebraska. [link to en.wikipedia.org] from another thread.. The Brownville levee is reported to be dangerously close to breaking. Sandbagging efforts have been abandoned. One wonders how such a break would affect Cooper Nuclear just three miles downstream.
