Re: Best El Hierro Thread On GLP - Canary Islands - ACTIVITY HAS RETURNED - AGAIN!
I have some ignorant questions.

This current deformation is on the island. Did this happen in the previous eruption?

Is this action anywhere near last years eruption? (I've got myself confused)

If the island is bulging are they planning on evacuating people? I would be off there pretty fast.

Lastly, I'm a bit suss about those steaming cliffs. Is this something new or are they regularly steaming? The cynical part of me says that is cloud/mist.

its not steam, it's dust from multiple rockfalls

it happened March this year too..

yeah, there was deformation of the island during the initial episodes.

pretty sure it'll be on the early pages of this thread. good luck in finding it though. lol

NO more earthquakes, very calm graphs but again spectacular deformation charts.
Deformations are giving a totally changed pattern this morning. The Southern areas are subsiding. The eastern central area is stabilizing BUT the western central and northern areas are inflating (western area very strong). HI10 (El Julan) has no data for the second day in a row. The changing deformation pattern shows the biggest magma movement below the island concentrating in the El Golfo area (Sabinosa to Frontera) and is an additional sign that the crisis isn’t over yet.
The strongest deformation today is noted in Sabinosa (GPS station HI03) where the ground was lifted 3 cm in less than 24 hours. The station HI04 (slightly west of HI03 (see map) has however stabilized data.
This crisis will only end when the deformations are stabilizing everywhere. [link to earthquake-report.com]

"For us, there is clear evidence, based on studies of seismic tomography, which can identify the amount of magma beneath the island" and adds that the amount of magma that came out at the time with the submarine eruption "is negligible with respect to the amount of magma that these studies have provided, amount of magma that is responsible for these processes that generate periods of seismic-strain Crisis "..... read that link carefully

el julan, el golfo, and las playas REGULARLY get reloaded with lavas, which are them prime for collapse when ANOTHER eruption happens, pushing them over the edge into the abyss

now, picture THIS scenario. this upcoming eruption at El Hierro will come out, most probably, in one of those three rift zones, if it emerges on the island. IF it comes out at El Julan, will it push the ALREADY there cold lavas from the last large eruption, the EL JULAN cliffs in other words, into the sea?

comparison of the already slid El Golfo, with a primed El Julan..

007 - IRON STILL swelling and deforming FOR ENTRY IN THE ISLAND OF MAGMA - MONITORING AND SEISMIC VOLCANIC NEWS ON THE ISLAND OF IRON - MAP UPDATED - 30/12/2013 - 17:30 h . Canaries. Today we have two earthquakes located in areas of the swarms of last summer in the middle of the island and the N Sabinosa , but the highlight is the deformation continues , even increases in some control points and GPS IGN of INVOLCAN .

The more bulky in the south of the island with leg lifts or swelling or uplifts of 8.3 cm in the station of Pinar INVOLCAN and more than 8 inches in HI -08 stations ( Taibique ) , HI -09 ( La Restinga ) and HI -10 ( Cala sized how ) . Gulf there are appreciable deformation between 5 and 6 cm , indicating that the intrusion progresses . Also the horizontal deformation is significant and indicates that the focus is the center of the island

What's going on ?
The truth is that it is difficult to answer these and there are only mere hypothesis. My hypothesis is that the latter earthquakes today tell me that there may not be seismicity because the pressure is migrating to higher levels between 8 and 12 km. Yesterday also was an earthquake in the entrance area of the intrusions in the Gulf and now accelerates deformation, and of course I am clear that 5.1 was on the edge of the zone of seismicity which came to 4.9 and still pressurizing all levels , so continue entering magma intrusion not take to start giving back to seismicity in the weakest area is the first to sing , see (Enrique ) .

If you feel an earthquake , vibrations , strange odor, deformation doors and windows that do not fit well at home or cracks , stains on the sea , bubbling plumes of smoke , strange animal behavior , noise or whatever, do not hesitate in report on IGN questionnaire or by applying AVCAN QUAKE .

Maria Morales in the news Being in the Canary Islands (6 am), I heard a statement by the president of the Cabildo Herreño Alpidio, saying quote, which had, scientists who said there were chances of eruption and could be the Orchilla lighthouse, and others also dismissed that possibility, however they worked and were being taken for the safety of the islanders and visitors, and if one other possibility, which now is its main concern and pedia tranquility. considering the quakes are still very deep, could the large deformations on the surface be something like a champagne cork, being slowly eased out?

QUAKE AND INFLACTION CRISIS IN EL HIERRO IS OVER: 2013-12-31 08:52 UTC
What we had expected last night was confirmed this morning by the new deformation data : a general subsidence (deflation) of the island (remark : a couple of signals – HI01 and HI10 – were not updated).
Frontera had a 1 day deflation of 4 cm!.
Yesterday we saw the last tremor disappear from various seismographs. Tremor is the indication that magma is moving somewhere below the island.
The 2 new earthquakes have no special meaning as they will be probably generated by deformation stress and not by magma stress or movement. This will certainly happen more the next few days.
How long will it take to the next crisis ? Nobody knows as it can happen tomorrow or next year, but scientists are convinced that more activity periods will follow.
We were once again happily surprised by the many people following this crisis via earthquake-report.com. We will continue this report also in the future. Please continue to send a comment when you see something irregular on one of the seismographs.

i am NOT liking that signal on La Palma. been watching that for a while. look at the sporadic noise at 4 hertz and higher. i haven't seen this before. notice there's a gap between the bottom of the signal and the low roar from the deep magma at the 1 hertz level?

i am wondering if this is a signal of rock creaking

i'm clicking back through the charts now, i haven't seen this signal before though. still looking.

found a small signal at 22:12 on the 27th of December..

i'll keep looking

Renewed increasing tremor is visible in the El Golfo area (TAB en TAN seismographs). Remember that we mentioned this morning that HI04 Sabinosa area GPS station had an increase of at least 2 cm during the last 24 hours.

2014-01-01 10:44 UTC
4 earthquakes since our latest update. The M2.1 at 3 km depth earthquake was located to the south of La Restinga in the Las Calmas sea
Ecxept for the HI04 GPS (Sabinosa) who shows a lifting of 2 cm, almost all the other stations stabilizes based on the new IGN deformation data.

yes, but WHAT is chugging along? see the disconnect between the LOUDEST part of the signal, and the low roar of the deep magma at 0-1 hertz?

[link to www.ign.es]

here's the SHZ spectrogram chart on El Hierro for the same hour..

[link to www.02.ign.es]

nothing.

what IS that weird signal? I really do not think it's magma causing it, because we'd see it on other charts, so what's left? a huge chunk of loose rock, maybe? Maybe the sensor is right over where the rock is creaking, giving us that dramatic chart?
