I don't think that water and butane are dangerous. It will be just butane poluted water.

Don't be an idiot. Butane is a gas. Water is a liquid. The butane sits on top of the water, and would be potentially pushed to the surface. If it does, it is extremely flammable.

I believe butane is one of the easiest gasses to liquify. Would that make a difference? Would the butane really set on top of the water, or would it mix with it? I'm not trying to be a smart ass, it's a real question.

If this thing blows..it is the secondary effect that we will all have to worry about..because we dont know how many tunnels, underground water flows etc that exist and where they would go to..like a lit fuse that is inner connected under our continent..it could make its way to God knows where like a domino effect.

Although butane does liquify easily, it doesn't quite mix with water. It can be used as an aerosol accelerant. The butane essentially sits on top of the water, and they use water to force it out. Think of it this way, they wouldn't use salt domes to store butane at all, if it wrecked the butane.

If the underground storage well for the butane were to crack and be filled with salt water, the salt water would push the liquid butane to the surface, which would likely escape top-side as gaseous butane. A lot of butane. If it finds a spark, it will ignite the very air, and the resulting fireball would light up the butane escaping from the ground like a fuse. It would then burn down into the underground storage cavern, which would go off like a giant underground bomb.

That's not good,But it could just be because its a salt dome collapse. If ocean water is getting into the pocket , then its also getting into fault lines etc.

liquid butane doesn't mix with water. it would rise to the top and whatever open space there is above it, gets filled with gaseous butane. the amounts of liquid and gas are at an equilibrium.

either liquid or gaseous butane can ignite.

The water in the sink hole is contaminated with diesel fuel, which is floated atop brine in salt caverns to prevent erosion, as well as diesel contaminants such as volatile organic chemicals, ethyl benzene, toluene and xylene. It's also contaminated with cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including naphthalene, anthracene and pyrene.

Air tests near the sinkhole and downwind detected volatile organic chemicals including benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene and carbon tetrachloride.

The health impacts associated with chemicals detected in the air near the disaster site can cause respiratory and skin problems, dizziness, weakness, muscle aches and abdominal pain, while benzene is a known carcinogen.

DEQ has also been testing for naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) from oil drilling, which were stored in the salt caverns. The tests found that NORM was present, but at concentrations below acceptable limits, according to LEAN.

In samples taken from the sinkhole water at a depth of 80 feet, Radium-226 levels were 63.569 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L), while Radium-228 was was measured at 18.705 pCi/L.

Surface water samples turned up Radium-226 at 6.512 pCi/L and Radium-228 at 1.778 pCi/L. The Environmental Protection Agency has established a maximum contaminant level for radium in public drinking water supplies of 5 pCi/L.

Does anyone in that area know the factual current situation? If so, on a scale of 1-10 (10 being ignition is imminent), what would you rate this at it's current condition?

Well that seems perfectly normal...

"THEY" won't tell us the truth about this and you know it. What's so disturbing is how much potential damage could be done here...

feel pretty bad for anyone being affected by this...I hope someone figures out what to do soon...before there is too much more damage...good luck to all..

This is like a slow motion nightmare. I hate to repeat myself but I would probably get my kids away if I chose or needed to stay. Best of luck to all who live in the area. I have read quite a bit about the sinkhole and have a bad feeling about it.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch wonder if they will pay to have repairs done on all the cars this contaminated gasolene affected? I do have to say I feel for all those having problems...but the prediction about oil getting sick has been around for about 4 years or so now...
