VOLCANO WATCH: New Insights Gained From Kīlauea Summit Collapses

Kilauea - Status: GREEN/ NORMAL
The tide may have turned at Kilauea’s summit, with USGS-HVO making the first mention of ground uplift within the footprint of the 2018 collapse. This change has been expected and even took longer to appear than in previously recorded large summit collapses, and is slow enough that it lacks the signature gas signal that accompanies shallow magma intrusion.

We can now confirm that since early March, there have been some notable changes at the summit of Kīlauea, as flat trends in both tilt & GPS signals have shifted progressively towards trends of inflation around Halema’uma’u. USGS-HVO made note of 3 inches of ground uplift at a GPS station within the 2018 collapse area in their most recent update, which reflects the tilt data streams we can access.

Currently the status of Kilauea has not changed, the volcano is slowly recharging its magma plumbing system and we can expect lava to return to the surface sooner or later. The most likely location for the next Kilauea eruption based on the historical record is going to be somewhere around the summit, inside Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Nothing has changed from when USGS-HVO stated it’s most likely “the next eruption of Kilauea will take place in the caldera within a few years (though now potentially sooner), and that the next eruption on one of the volcano's rift zones will be in a decade or longer.“ For those living in the Lower East Rift, there is still no cause for alarm..."

"(BIVN) – Of all the many names submitted to the Hawaii Board of Geographic Names as recommendations for the volcanic Fissure 8 feature that erupted during the summer of 2018 on the lower East Rift Zone of KIlauea, there is one that seems to be getting the most attention.

Ahuʻailāʻau is the name that was submitted by Kalani Makekau-Whittaker on behalf of Piʻilani Kaʻawaloa, Keone Kalawe, and Lei Kaleimamahu.

In their submittal, Makekau-Whittaker noted that 'Ail'au is a “Hawaii deity for the volcano and lava. He predates Pelehonuamea and has been relatively absent from the Kanaka consciousness for generations. The collective experience of numerous cultural practitioners in Puna from the beginning of the eruption who have been face-to-face with the lava on multiple occasions has been filled with sightings, visions, and communication with ʻAilāʻau. He has appeared in dreams of a number of cultural experts and there was a sighting of him in human form at the Pu'uhonua o Puna. Because ʻAilāʻau’s presence has been so prevalent throughout this eruption with so many people, it is no surprise that the visions received for the name of the fissure include his name.”..."

May 24, 2019, is a notable date in Kīlauea Volcano’s history. It is the one-year anniversary of several key events in the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, most notably, the reactivation of fissure 8 with intermittent spattering while fissures 7 and 21 were producing two ‘a‘ā flows. It is also the 50th anniversary of another important event on Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone: the start of the 1969‒1974 Mauna Ulu eruption.

Fifty years ago, on May 24, 1969, the opening fissure of the Mauna Ulu eruption broke ground where Kilauea’s east rift and the Koa‘e fault zone intersect. This fissure behaved similarly to fissures 17, 20, and 22 of the 2018 eruption with 30-m- (100-ft-) tall lava fountains emerging from a linear crack. This style of eruption is classic to Hawaii and is thus called “hawaiian fountaining” in volcanology textbooks around the world..."

Kilauea East Rift Refill Motion Slows, Summit Deformation Continues

"(BIVN) – The apparent refilling of Kilauea’s deep East Rift Zone magmatic reservoir appears to be slowing down, scientists say.

In its weekly Kilauea Volcano update, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that GPS stations and tiltmeters continue to show motions consistent with refilling of the deep magmatic reservoir in the broad region between Pu'u 'O'o and Highway 130, but added that “there is an indication on tiltmeters that this motion has been slowing down over the past couple weeks.”

The refilling trend was observed since the end of the 2018 eruption, and scientists say the significance of the pattern is unclear. “Monitoring data do not suggest any imminent change in volcanic hazard for this area,” USGS said."

Kilauea Monitoring Update, Scientists Check On Fissure 8

"BIVN) – Things remain quiet on Kilauea. The volcano is not erupting and remains at a NORMAL/GREEN alert level.

Scientists with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say they visited Fissure 8 on on Kilauea Volcano’s lower East Rift Zone on June 3, in order to conduct a routine check on the dormant vent and webcam.

“The purpose of the trip was to change batteries in the webcam and make visual observations of fissure 8’s cone and interior,” HVO wrote in an image caption posted Tuesday. “No steam or fumes were visible and only a faint smell of sulfur was momentarily detected.”

Meanwhile, Kilauea monitoring data from the past nine months “have shown steady rates of seismicity, deformation, and low rates of sulfur dioxide emissions at the summit and East Rift Zone, including the area of the 2018 eruption,” the scientists say."

Mauna Loa: Slight Increase In Earthquakes Reported In Monthly Update

"(BIVN) – A slight increase in the number of detected earthquakes at Mauna Loa was noted over the past month, according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which posted a monthly activity update on Thursday, June 6.

According to USGS HVO:

Small earthquakes, mostly less than M2.0, continued under the summit caldera at depths around 1-4 km (0.6-2.5 mi) below ground level. Seismicity was low in other areas of the volcano. The largest earthquake for Mauna Loa over the past month was a M2.8 event on May 15, which occurred under the summit caldera at a depth of approximately 3.5 km (2.2 mi) below ground level."
