I don't usually get to shop there, and didn't hit all the food aisles by any means, but everywhere I did look was well-stocked, from dog food to coffee to the incredible blueberry muffins. Should have taken the time to check canned veggie area, but didn't. If I have the privilege again, will try to remember that area. If you've never gotten the blueberry muffins - and there are other flavors as well, blueberry is the best - do check them out. Blueberries the size of the end of your thumb! They are heavenly! Quoting: Mental Case ------------ Nope, it's just a garden. I grow & save heirloom seeds for fun...and I'll get the 100 seeds back that I had planted with only 1 ear (which I am confident I'll get). Hey MC, I garden too. I was told that corn can get inbred pretty quick if you are saving seed from a small harvest. Any chance your poor harvest may be from saving seed from a limited gene pool over a few years? |

There was almost nobody in the store...but every person there was conspiring to get in my way...and then STOP! There was one old man in the entire aisle I get my coffee...and wouldn't you know it...he was parked for the duration right infront of the item I wanted...I finally just reached over his cart to grab my coffee while he raised his eyes from his label reading to give me a dirty look. Another 4 old folks blocking the center of the aisle having a conversation...I just skipped that aisle. Finally get back to my truck to GTFO of there and here they all come & stand right infront of my truck so I can't leave :D Then another old fogy almost wiped them all out when slowly driving by...that's when they finally dispersed & I was able to drive away If I am going to be damned...I am going to be damned for who I really am! |

I got it from "Bountiful gardens" many years ago. When I was growing up in West Virginia there was an extremely local variety of white corn that made the best cornbread that you've ever tasted in your life. Just as I left I heard that the variety had been picked up by a national distributor, wonder if it's the same that you have? Never heard a variety name, everyone just called it white corn. "Yes, yes. But it sure did attract humming birds! If you have what I think you have, it's a singular pleasure to try cooking with. Like I said, cornbread will never be the same after trying the white corn. I would like to try growing tobacco but for all practical purposes it is worse than marijuana. My employer actually tests for nicotine in the pre-employment drug screening. Maybe one day when I work for someone sane or I've retired. When I lived in North Carolina we had fields of tobacco growing, a lot of people that I knew there had their first job working in those fields much like my first job was working hay fields. I live in WA state where it is no longer legal to purchase hops - so my loss is really, really my loss! Happy for those of you who are blessed to be growing hops still. Beer is far from the only reason to grow them - please use a search engine and see all the uses! First, I would suggest making pillows out of the dried blossoms for people you know who suffer from insomnia. Hops as a pillow are said to be a cure for this. Check out all the other uses. Sandman1, you are amazing - you have prepped so well, and have such talents and abilities - you are wise and fortunate and blessed! Wish I had a quarter of your well-planned survival! The only gas I have is whatever is in my tank at the time. I try not to let it get below half, and recently I prefer a quarter. Have perhaps ten small bottles of butane for my only source of cooking and water boiling in a grid down situation. I hope to purchase a Mr. Buddy heater for our only source of heat in absence of power. I have two forty-lb tanks for propane, one a quarter full and one a bit more, so they both need to be filled when I can. I will attach one to the heater and go for it - I'll paint the connections with soapy water to check them prior to use. All in the future, obviously. I've put effort into purchasing foods which will only require hot water to prepare, and purchased a two-quart steel thermos to "cook" foods over night in hot water, such as oatmeal. I did get a couple bags of beans and of rice, but hope not to have to expend the butane to cook them. I wonder how much cooking would be accomplished overnight of beans in the thermos? Congratulations again, Sandman1, for all you have done! I think that it's still too early to tell how the weather will drive costs but so far it's not the best news. How is it now in your area? Has harvest been done? Were any crops productive? Lucky you smelling grapes! I'd be making some fine grape jelly there! Food is not looking good, still. I don't think our early concerns were wasted as no good news has arrived to change our concerns. I certainly hope everyone who has participated in this thread,or even just read it without posting, has gotten in good stocks of food, and are prepared for the cold, hungry winters that are staring us down right now. I continue picking up a few things as I can. Today I found pre-cooked Barilla macaroni in the Dollar Tree, oddly. When I look in stores for the "good" spam, like roast beef, it's always gone. Did find one can of turkey spam today. Remember to consider tastebud boredom and have on hand things you can prepare for meals that will surprise and be a treat for your family. Beans and rice need to have occasional interruptions with something more tasty. A few deserts will also go well to keep the family happy. I have a couple cans of cocoa powder, intending to use it for relief of my sweet tooth which will certainly ache when not having sweets daily! LOL Keep preparing as best you can, people. Remember heirloom seeds will be so necessary - we have to be able to grow all that we can. May the Good Lord bless and keep each one of us in the future that is bearing down on us.
