Quoting: RubyV82 If you have underlying mastocytosis or mast cell activation syndrome/disorder which is possible, the keto diet itself may cause anaphylaxis OK, thanks for scaring the shit out of me. That is some rough stuff, but seems pretty rare. I don't think I have the markers for it. yeesh. Sorry not trying to scare you. I think if it was mastocytosis you would have known already, but the mast cell activation syndrome can come on at any point in life. It causes intolerance to histamine. Being in Ketosis causes mast cells to degranulate. Histamine is one of the products in mast cells (which are the immune system cells). Eggs contain histamine as does pot roast and caffeine (caffeine would cause release of mast cells within 30mins). I think the keto diet and all the things you are that day caused a build up of histamine in your system and possibly a dao gene polymorphism, that would not be able to clear histamine as quickly from the body that then resulted in anaphylaxis. If it happens again and you can’t find a cause try a low histamine diet? Wow. You ONLY get posts this intelligent on GLP. Thank you. More research needed. |

I guess I have research to do... ...did I mention it is a great day to be alive? You need to get to your doctor and have them prescribe an Epi Pen that you would carry on you at all times, in case that ever happens again. Very very lucky you are ok. |

Quoting: anonymous coward 76076258 So far, I have found more good, helpful info here in this thread than I got from the doctor. That is why I told my story and started a thread as soon as I could. I would rather hear from real people, anonymous or not, than a guy in a white coat. |

Okay Can you tell I don’t like unsolved mysteries? Yes, and I love it and appreciate it. I have been on a research binge... so far, I lean toward the MCT, combined with an empty stomach, combined with ketosis and a liver loaded with vitamin A (toxin), and the released fats (from ketosis) resulting in a toxic load (from the released Vitamin A) causing my immune system to create a cytokene storm. ...or not. Still researching. |

Still researching. I'm having good results with my issues with a lowish vitamin A diet. I've been on it 4 months. Others will tell you, and I will too, this is not an instant fix and you will cycle through periods of revisiting problems as your body does some long-needed detox. The problems are not simple and the lowish A diet will have to be continued for quite a while. Years, generally. I now tell my healthy loved ones to do the math (plenty of calulators online) and DON'T be eating anything MORE than the Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamin A. This includes beta carotene, all the A's. A lot of people will look at you funny, but it isn't so weird that there are limits to how much of a nutrient should be taken. Iron is a good example. You need some, but not a lot. I also think there are other factors at play, lifestyle and possibly genetic, that create your personal "burn rate" for vitamin A. |
