I am building a decentralized social media tool

Note to the mods: I'm not promoting this tool via this post. I don't want to compete with GLP. I simply want to discuss what I'm working on and its possibilities.

I have been thinking about and tinkering with all kinds of web technologies that might enable a truly decentralized social media platform ever since I first heard about people being "de-platformed" because of wrongthink several years ago.

Since that time, a few players have shown up who claim they are decentralized, but it's not true. They all rely on some central point of failure. Whether that be some cloud service like Amazon Web Services or Azure, or depend on a single domain name/DNS provider/CDN, like Cloudflare or some other webhost.... These approaches always showed the major flaw.

How can someone build a tool that is truly decentralized while still depending on big tech players?

The answer is simple. Take the middle man out entirely and go 100% decentralized with P2P. By that, I mean get rid of domain names. Get rid of hosting providers. Get rid of centrally managed storage.

How am I doing it? WebRTC and WebTorrent. Those are the main clues I'll give you. But I'm not going to give away all the secrets before I have a working model that I'm ready to release into the wild....

If that is true, tell me how your take on things improves on the Pocketnet implementation? Or, otherwise, how are your ideas better than theirs? Can you compare what you have in mind to it?

I have only tried Pocketnet once and it looked pretty swell. I have no skin in the game other than that I want something very robust and secure and also functional and God willing, popular.

In my world, it never works out like you imagine as a young thinker with some skills.

Been there, done that.

If you have the real deal in mind, your first point of attack should be currency rather than social.

Social is the weaker point and maybe safer to some degree.

I could give you some suggestions about how to raise cash and market your thing while building it, but not here.

You want to hear something mindblowing about it? You don't need to visit a single website for it to work... You can run the code straight from a file that loads in your browser. As soon as you do that, you're online.

I suspected you knew nothing about it.

I suggest you check it out. Its not slow at all. Getting it working will be the hardest part. But for someone as smart as you, it will be easy.

I found it really nice to use and even on the block chain its pretty fast since it is mostly text based. But you can post images and videos now I hear. It functions more or less as fast as Twitter.

The people there are also very welcoming even if you are hard core right wing. That is who are on there now for the most part.

You have to do this to compare what you have in mind. There are many others also.

You don't need a central server. You just configure one computer to act as the "client", and the other as the "server".
