I am retired military (Hawaii was my final duty station) living on Oahu, windward side. What I will tell you is that perhaps early on that “white people” took advantage of the local population. But... let’s be honest. Local people of Asian descent run Hawai’i; most are either of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, or Filipino ancestry. White folks don’t run much of anything here, but that is my observation.

Secondly, you cannot win any election in Hawai’i without a (D) behind your name. Take that for what it is. As such, there is no counter thought at any level and that is exhibited in public works projects, social programs, and, of course, schooling. All of those areas that are public bureaucracies are, in my opinion, poorly managed and assuredly ripe with graft. It was a three year project for three miles of road repair and construction in Waimānalo, yet hardly a word or protest.

I have children in the school system and can attest that at least at the high school-level that the students are issued a Chrome Book. I’m not sure about every school though as I know parents with kids at other high schools that did not get issued a computer- Campbell High School comes to mind. Also, there is subtle and overt racism here in the schools. My eldest, who is ‘hapa’, meaning half white and half Asian, tells me all the time of how the teachers talk and act. Mostly this racism comes from local ethnic Hawaiian teachers that are graduates of Punahau or Kamehameha schools and that generally furthered education in the liberal UH system. But it also comes from some othe the Asian teachers that were born and raised here as well as white teachers against some of the local, “Hawaiian kine” kids.

We have low unemployment, but the housing cost is out of control here more than anywhere else. Everything costs more here; I believe the cost of living here is 80% more than the mainland on net. That said, many jobs, even professional ones such as doctors, accountants, lawyers and so forth, actually pay lower that their mainland counterparts. Taken together, you end up with a blue state that blames everything on everyone else; a state with a rising crime problem (it isn’t whites, Japanese, or Koreans, or even Chinese causing the problems); a state with lenient punishments and high recedivism; an exploding homelessness/drug problem; limited physical mobility (it’s five figures to move to the mainland); a state with corruption that rivals Chicago, New Jersey, and New York.

But hey, it’s all for the sunshine tax.

I sure hope whatever grade you're teaching that you're teaching them about the importance of online privacy.

I hope you're reminding these students that if they're logged into their school Google account, even if at home and on their own family's internet connection, that all their Google linked history is made available to the school, i.e. Youtube watch history and comments, Google web searches, Gmail email, etc.

Though, at this point in time, hopefully the kids are already well aware.

I pointed out that a day in the life with your job differs only slightly from that of a child and yet somehow teachers have completely failed the youth for the last 50 years and continue to demand pay raises. And now you're complaining about the curriculum that you agreed to teach. Also you're trying to make yourself out to be some hero and a "whistleblower." You're a hypocrite. I’m sympathetic to the Hawaiians, who managed to sign away their sovereignty to us mainlanders. Their islands and Way of life are being destroyed.
