British expats in Europe to be 'stripped of UK bank accounts in weeks'
Tens of thousands of British expats who live in Europe risk having their UK bank accounts closed 'in weeks' due to post-Brexit rules.

Lloyds, Barclays and Coutts are among a number of UK banks that have starting giving notice to expatriate customers to say they will close their accounts at 11pm on December 31.

Wow this is a big worry for expats living in Europe. Surely this can't be right. Must be some financial security in place?

Just register your UK bank accounts at a family members address, although not entirely legal I doubt you will get caught.

Funny how 'social security' has a shortfall...but never WELFARE!
Gimme a break.
Somehow, we can always afford ALL types of welfare (even for millions of illegal immigrants!), plus billions in foreign aid to nations that hate us...BUT...social security is a "problem".

Instead of Germany ever invading The UK again they should consider just selling it to China and be done with the whole mess.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think without a address in the same country most banks globally won't let you have an account with them other than Cayman banks and a few others.

I live in Croatia but have bank accounts in the states but I had to have a address in the U.S.

After the Cyprus fiasco, Brit banks were inviting overseas customers to open accounts in the UK.

Apparently there is a mechanism for such banking services to continue, but it looks like Boris hasn't activated it. If he does nothing and these closures occur, it may force tens of thousands of disgruntled expats to return to the UK. I wonder if they'll support Bojo in the future if that happens?

I don't get it. How can a bank take your money just because of where you live.

I mean banks can tell you they no longer want your business, and you can move your money into another bank.

are the rules different in UK of where you can put your money.?

The majority of expats are pensioners, ofcourse they also mean them. Otherwise they would have been mentioned as an exception eh

Nowhere is it mentioned the banks will take the money, the way I understand it expats will just have to open an account at a bank in the country of residence and have their funds transfered.

I think this is a measure to prevent tax evasion, it will probably be harder to get a hold of the data required for the UK and vice versa.

Too bad British pensioners, no tax evasion for you! That's a right reserved for corporations and the uberwealthy.

The banks stand to make billions in "seized accounts" and all of that money goes into the banks books.....

For the EU it is, they're losing their second highest funders, and the highest one, Germany, is in deep financial shit so they won't make up the shortfall. They're toast.

When I've lived oversea's I have opened bank accounts in those countries, but I keep my main account under my Mothers address, it's worked well for me, shouldn't really be a huge problem for the expat...
