I am just curious. That it all And I keep waiting for you to look up what "hill sphere" means and do the math on what the hill sphere would be for a sub-km wide asteroid. If there's anything orbiting this asteroid it will be so close to it that I wouldn't have been able to resolve it separately from the asteroid itself in my images. If it has companions then there's a good chance Goldstone would detect that when they do radar observations of it next month. I did look it up the first time you asked and I learned. Thank you Now your reply. That is a start. Thank you But with your equipment, your own two eyes. That you can confirm. Even small buddies. That would probably burn up, if they get pulled in. Just curious on a confirmation with two eyes. I am only interested in verifiable facts and real life experience. That is how I live life, sorry. |

Thanks How close does Apophis need to be? In order for a regular astronomer to verify/view if Apophis has any small buddies tagging along for a ride? The closest distance from earth to verify and/or first viable timeframe to verify (etc...2023, 2026, 2028) If I remember correctly comet Elin had a huge trail and it was verifiable. But when did that verification become observed. Understanding the two are different scenarios, but both can have little buddies and that is what I am interested in. |

How many times do I have to tell you, because of the small Hill sphere You're not going to see that with an amateur telescope. If it has any moons orbiting it, Goldstone would pick them up in a few days when it does radar observations. I don't know too many amateurs with large radar telescopes. Maybe the guys at Bochum could do it but that's about it. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79161915 Elenin was a pretty pathetic comet. I'm not sure what you mean by trail, it had a tail, or do you mean the trail of disintegrated debris after it fell apart? That's a very different situation to that of an asteroid like Apophis. If the asteroid had been exhibiting cometary activity I would have seen that already. |

In the year 2028 on December 21 , three months before Apophis closest pass. Amateur astronomers should be able to see if the 300 m Apophis has any buddies surrounding it. Maybe a 50 m buddy. Maybe a 25 m buddy. Nobody knows because it is not close enough. Hence my question of appropriate distance to observe the above. Get it now. But the date I used was a guess. That was my question. But never received specific hypothetical distance or date where this can be verified if it has any buddies. |

There became a specific distance, where amateur astronomer were able to visibly see the trail and if any significant debris was within. Obviously they could not see the debris within the trail 10 years before arrival. Because it was to far out, but at that time we could see the light from main core of the comet. And yes we all was disappointed by the weakness of comet Elin |

Currently that can't be observed with Astro's equipment. But wait for it. No shit Sherlock. I am asking for a hypothetical estimated distance that it can be verified if it has any surrounding buddies. Let’s me try to answer again. I If Apophis closest pass is March 13 2029. Then hypothetically, an amateur astronomer can peer through his equipment and Verify on (let’s say) March 10th, close enough to verify if it has any buddies trailing it, let’s us say a 20 meter buddy. The dam thing is to effing far away, at this moment to verify. Get it? So there has to be a closer approach where this can be verified. My estimate of three days before to observe and verify was a guess because I am a dumbass. But maybe Astro can give a timeframe where this can be verified at an earlier date. So we don’t have to wait, three days before it’s closest approach to verify. Surely the question is understandable now. |
