Me & the Dirt's have a Love/Hate Relationship.

Ducati, the engineers that brought you the 90deg V-twin and desmodronic valves. The sound of cannons as you start off down the road. The precision and stealth of a lioness in full stride and a purring panther at idle. A mans bike in a sea of shit. The red throbbing Italian Stallion, yeeha!

I haven't owned a bike in several years, but the fastest beast I ever owned was a KZ1300.

When I was re-building one KZ-1000/J-Model Police/'82 LTD Z1000/ I went around every neighborhood I'd encounter hanging (do you want to sell this?) tags on every KZ above 900 that I'd see.


I wound up w/ a PERFECT J-Cam 82 Police for $400.

A girl & her 'significantwhatever' had bought a PRIMO decked Cop Bike for $1400 at a County auction.

He met another, & left her a note to sell the bike & his car (which was already sold) & to send him the money.

She sold it to me, for $400.00


It was worth $5000.00, in that day's dollars.

Geeze, NICE score! I wouldn't mind finding one of those now. The 1000 was a much better all around bike, IMO, than the 1300. That 13 was a pig in the turns. Not too bad here in Florida, because all the roads are straight, lol.

Y'know how the KZ-1000's MPH/Odo guage would peg at 160?

I built one that would peg it (easily) w spoke wheels & w/ out turbo, nitro, or any other add-mod.

It's just a MONSTER motor, if you know how to treat it.

That's why (for YEARS) the mini-sprinters have been using mod'd KZ's in their cars.

I built one that would peg it (easily) w spoke wheels & w/ out turbo, nitro, or any other add-mod.

No mountains around here (I'd kill for 'em) but we've got CR's like 896 (or 898, insignificant) that have hills that, 2 wheels or 4, if you top 'em at more than 60, you're going airborne.

I've busted a few bones doing exactly that.

I had one of these, GS 900, when I lived in Colorado. Plenty of twisty canyons there to wring it out.

It is.. The worst is when you get trapped under your bike... with the exhaust on your leg... Who wants a drumstick???

You in AZ? Know Oak Creek Canyon well...VFR750, single swing arm, long and lean, well balanced for it's time 20 years ago. IMO prob one of the best balanced bikes of its time.

Y'know how to tell when the guy you're riding with is REALLY your best friend?

When your 600lb KZ, hot as a rocket, after a 300 mile fast-run, falls out from under you as you're turning into a gravel (white-rock) parking lot.

And the guy you're riding with, who stops & through laughs realizes that the motor BURNS you as you lay there...
