Storms like hurricanes are measured in millibars because we had no way to measure wind speed in them until recently, so it give us a comparison to historic storms. In general, the lower the pressure the stronger the storm. 960 millibars is about a catagory 2 hurricane, sometimes 3 (those categories are measures of wind speed.

Intensification is considered rapid if it goes more than 2 mb per hour for several hours - 12 to 24. It is considered explosive if the mb drop at 2.5 per hour.

It is rare to see 955 mb on land, such as Moscow, Russia or inland USA. Lower numbers are usually dependent on conditions that can only be achieved in tropical and very warm ocean waters with very little wind shear.

Don't think mb is a proper abbreviation, just used it for this post.

I'm on Long Island and I would say the majority of people here have no clue as to what is going on.

OK, so how are things going on the east coast right now as far as people running on grocery stores for supplies, water, ice, etc?

Are they at Home Depot or Lowe's to get plywood for windows, tarps, tools?

Lined up for gasoline, propane, kerosene?

THIS is why it is so important to realize the category of the storm doesn't always equate to the damage.

Hurricane Sandy plowed through the Bahama Islands as a powerful Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds yesterday, but high wind shear has destroyed the hurricane's eyewall and reduced Sandy to Category 1 strength, with 80 mph winds. Satellite loops show that the low-level center of Sandy is now exposed to view, with most of the storm's heavy thunderstorm activity pushed to the north side by strong upper level winds from the south-southwest. Cuban state media is reporting that eleven people were killed on Cuba, and damage was heavy, with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed. It was Cuba's deadliest hurricane since Category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed sixteen people in 2005. Damage was also substantial on Jamaica, where one person was killed, and power was knocked out for 70% of the island's residents. Nine deaths have been reported in Haiti due to flooding, and heavy rains from Sandy continue there this morning.

Might not be quite relevant, but Moscow is hit by a sleet storm / (blizzard?) with a huge pressure drop right now. The air pressure is 962 mbar and falling. Might not be very hurricane - worthy but it's still approaching the record low of 955 mbar that I've ever measured on my home spring-action barometer. Something is really weird going on with the weather around the globe right now, I swear.
