MASSIVE STORM JUST DAYS AWAY for EAST COAST!! UPDATED Storms like hurricanes are measured in millibars because we had no way to measure wind speed in them until recently, so it give us a comparison to historic storms. In general, the lower the pressure the stronger the storm. 960 millibars is about a catagory 2 hurricane, sometimes 3 (those categories are measures of wind speed. Quoting: Crazy Harriet Intensification is considered rapid if it goes more than 2 mb per hour for several hours - 12 to 24. It is considered explosive if the mb drop at 2.5 per hour. It is rare to see 955 mb on land, such as Moscow, Russia or inland USA. Lower numbers are usually dependent on conditions that can only be achieved in tropical and very warm ocean waters with very little wind shear. Don't think mb is a proper abbreviation, just used it for this post. Excellent explanation, thank you. I looked it up myself but my brain was too tired to 'get it'. Do you know what the pressure has to do with potential damage? Or these days do we just look at wind speed? The closer together those mb (wavy lines around the center) are, the harder the wind is blowing. More potential for damage. |

MASSIVE STORM JUST DAYS AWAY for EAST COAST!! UPDATED My friend in Long Island says that the local news media is saying it's no big deal. Do you agree? I'm on Long Island and I would say the majority of people here have no clue as to what is going on. Seriously I know. How annoying is it? I try talking to my brother about it and he just ignores it Well, tell him it's been nice knowing him, pack up YOUR family and get yourself OUT of harm's way! The air pressure is 962 mbar and falling. Might not be very hurricane - worthy but it's still approaching the record low of 955 mbar that I've ever measured on my home spring-action barometer. Something is really weird going on with the weather around the globe right now, I swear. Quoting: Snuffielover That is interesting! Let us know the effects of that storm. It could be quite relevant for those who will go through Sandy. |

MASSIVE STORM JUST DAYS AWAY for EAST COAST!! UPDATED OK, so how are things going on the east coast right now as far as people running on grocery stores for supplies, water, ice, etc? Quoting: ItsaTwister Are they at Home Depot or Lowe's to get plywood for windows, tarps, tools? Lined up for gasoline, propane, kerosene? What is going on - is anyone taking this storm seriously? I'm on the Delaware coast, where the Navy (NOGAPS) says it will make landfall. Went to BJ's Wholesale last night, only a small handful buying water. No one I have talked to is taking this seriously. It's scary as hell. They roll their eyes and I just shake my head. These people need to wake the hell up here or they are going to be statistics. My community is a manufactured home neighborhood 1 mile from the beach. I'm not sure I'd stay there during the worst of the storm. |

MASSIVE STORM JUST DAYS AWAY for EAST COAST!! UPDATED You have to remember, 50MPH winds aren't epic HOWEVER! Quoting: Oldmotherhubbard Sustained winds of even 30MPH on SATURATED GROUNDS for 24-48 hour periods of time WILL cause HUGE DAMAGE. This is why people get hurt. They think oh cat1 storm, 50mph winds whatever, well be fine no big deal. The placement of landfall with full moon tide...damage WILL be tremendous in places. This storm is HUGE (width wise) 1500miles wide, that is about HALF of the USA. regardless of where it makes landfall the effects (some not so significant) will be felt in MANY places. It is much better to be prepared. We have trees still with leaves on them it doesn't take much wind to topple them or pull them up with saturated ground. The storm surge will flood places as well. Well said, Mother. If this storm lingers in your area for 18-24-36 hours blowing and blowing, even if it's only 30-45 mph, that's a long time for things to be buffetted by the wind and rain. It's GOING to cause damage. Nothing is built (especially in that part of the country - no hurricane codes!) to withstand that type of weather for sustained periods of time. |

MASSIVE STORM JUST DAYS AWAY for EAST COAST!! UPDATED THIS is why it is so important to realize the category of the storm doesn't always equate to the damage. Hurricane Sandy plowed through the Bahama Islands as a powerful Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds yesterday, but high wind shear has destroyed the hurricane's eyewall and reduced Sandy to Category 1 strength, with 80 mph winds. Satellite loops show that the low-level center of Sandy is now exposed to view, with most of the storm's heavy thunderstorm activity pushed to the north side by strong upper level winds from the south-southwest. Cuban state media is reporting that eleven people were killed on Cuba, and damage was heavy, with thousands of homes damaged or destroyed. It was Cuba's deadliest hurricane since Category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed sixteen people in 2005. Damage was also substantial on Jamaica, where one person was killed, and power was knocked out for 70% of the island's residents. Nine deaths have been reported in Haiti due to flooding, and heavy rains from Sandy continue there this morning. I feel like a broken record, and I guess really I shouldn't care if people don't want to listen but seriously. This is nothing like you've seen before (weather wise) the stalling with the rain alone is enough to do destruction, then add CONSTANT SUSTAINED WINDS even at 30mph,you do have trees over there right? saturated ground plus winds sustained causes DOWN trees, power outages Oldmotherhubbardglp (at) live.com ~mistakes are proof that you are trying~ ~be kind to unkind people, for they are the ones that need it the most~ |

Strangely enough besides some 15-17 m/s m/s gales, a ton of snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain the storm is passing without much notice. Still the record for the lowest air pressure was broken in Moscow. I forgot to mention last time that the air pressure needs to be equalized to mean sea level as I'm not located 0 m above the sea surface (more like 300 meters) and that the storm didn't have enough moisture, or energy so far inland to do anything destructive. Too little temperature contrasts. Though if this was summer, and the storm originated near the Baltics we'd see some tornadoes probably. (Damn I want to abandon my life in Russia and just go to the US to become a storm chaser >< Stupid stupid stupid Fate :( ) If any foreign minister begins to defend to the death a "peace conference," you can be sure his government has already placed its orders for new battleships and aeroplanes. |
