Quoting: TeamReaper Thread: Select Wall Street banks cleared to use own risk models for Basel III requirements From link: Bad news when you have to modify the calculation to meet requirements!! What's the point if each bank uses their own models. Select Wall Street banks cleared to use own risk models "Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Citigroup are among the banks that have successfully completed trial runs using their own models to assess risk and capital requirements. However, Citi said in a statement that the Fed allowed it to use its own models only after insisting it changed its capital calculation. Under the new calculation agreed with the Fed, Citi’s assets increased by $56bn and its main capital ratio fell from 10.5 per cent to 10.1 per cent. The announcement by the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Friday gives those banks clarity on what methods they can use to calculate their capital requirements. Morgan Stanley, Bank of New York Mellon, State Street, Northern Trust Corporation and US Bancorp were also among the banks that successfully completed " B of A and Wells Fargo may have already met the requirement, but not on this list!! More: "Under this approach, a bank’s operational risk for capital is determined based on a bank’s internal models, which take into account internal loss data, external data and other factors. The standardised approach for smaller banks is based on a more simplified model based on their gross income and other factors." In other words, these mega-banks can't meet even the opening Basel III Requirements because of their leverage ratio's, so we'll let them make up their own rules... Par for the course... I was already out of banking at that time (I retired at the end of 2005), but all of my old friends haven't been that worried until just recently. I don't know the exact figures, but I wouldn't doubt people were grabbing their money and running for the hills. Especially from investment banks that were all in doubt at that time because of changes in the rules about how they accounted MBS that had any problem loans in them. You have to realize, banks like Lehmen and Bear Stearns had their balance sheets slashed in half by Basel 2.5 regs on "Mark to Market" for MBS... China’s credit-market gauges are triggering alarm bells, as banks grow cautious in lending to each other while investors prefer the safest government bonds. The spread between the two-year sovereign yield and the similar-maturity interest-rate swap, a gauge of financial stress, reached 121 basis points on Feb. 19, the widest in Bloomberg data going back to 2007. Two days later, the cost to lock in the three-month Shanghai interbank offered rate for one year reached an eight-month high of 94 basis points over similar contracts based on repurchase agreements, which are considered safer because they involve government securities as collateral. Watch the buzz around the "MyRA" program - they'll be telling you about how you can save for retirement, and help the economy at the same time.
