Wondering why they don't use any cranes on site?

Mobile cranes could be positioned close to the edge and do their shit (rocks, concrete) much more efficiently than helicopters.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74039751

^^ they might do that, but then you would need a hell of a haul road, staging area, and all within range of the crane.
I'd pick the helicopters, but they might build a staging area for the material and use a crane.

I bet if we had eyes on the ground, you would see a massive concrete batch plant bring constructed downstream right now...
No sense in any work until you have all material in place.
 Quoting: Switchback 74039853

You need the rock, sand and concrete batch plant assembled on scene, then the equipment to place it...

If we had eyes below the dam, I'd bet you would see 20 trucks working on this right now.
.
 Quoting: Switchback 74039853

Give them another day to assemble enough resources to pour concrete and plenty of rip-rap rock to fill the void.

Understand this, no one can exactly estimate the amount of material, so they will run a continuous haul from a quarry nearby and do all of this in less than 48 hours, start to finish.

It's the only option.
.

Only when it gets really hot, and I mean HOT. It's a very tall mountain, and usually holds that snow year round. But over the last 5 years it all but disappeared.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
Does everyone understand that if there is a one inch hole in the dam, the whole damn dam will blow?

This can happen from underground due to the constant pounding that is going on. The spillway could grow shorter and shorter as the ground underneath it where it is broken continues to collapse right up to the top.

More likely is that the balance of forces collapses. If the force of the water is greater than the resistance of the dirt, the water will literally move the resistance and the dam will blow.

Once again the underground pounding is making that scenario extremely likely.

WAY north. About 120-140 miles north. Crap it's 74 miles from Redding, just south of Lake Shasta. And yes, it flows into lake Shasta.

We do not learn from history because our studies are brief and prejudiced. In a surprising manner, 250 years emerges as the average length of national greatness. This average has not varied for 3,000years. The stages of the rise and fall of great nations seem to be:
The Age of Pioneers , The Age of Conquests ,The Age of Commerce ,The Age of Affluence ,The Age of Intellect ,The Age of Decadence.
Decadence is marked by: Defensiveness, Pessimism, Materialism,Frivolity An influx of foreigners The Welfare State A weakening of religion. Decadence is due to: Too long a period of wealth and power, Selfishness Love of money ,The loss of a sense of duty.
The life histories of great states are amazingly similar, and are due to internal factors. Their falls are diverse, because they are largely the result of external causes. - Sir John Glubb The Fate of Empires

Do any of you watch the Farsight Press timeline project?

One of their best remote viewers predicted infrastructure collapse of some sort for February. What the first remote viewer drew could have been a dam.

I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but I have been following them on YouTube, and I think they've had a lot of hits.

the whitewater daredevils are getting equipped for class VII rapid rides around that junction soon. I bet that water will be cold tho, too cold for me thanks..

that whole part of Ca will probably be screwed up for a few years after this season, I imagine. Sad, I drive the 5 back and forth between SoCal and SoOR frequently, and that is my second favorite part. The Shasta pass being my favorite..

Why is no effort being made to clear the river and get the dam outflow going again??? It released 55,000 CFS which is a whole lot of help. I never saw a max number for that outflow. It seems to me that must be completely FUBAR'd or they'd have mentioned SOMETHING. Cali brags they keep the Mexicans for cheap labor, get them out there with shovels. JK but serious too.

I'm not so sure it's a good idea to display images of the giant undercut that's happening under that spillway.
It will just freak people out.

They may have asked the media to back off so they can fix it... As best they can.

I suspect they will drop loads of rock by air, and then a massive amount of concrete which will cure in 1 hour.

It's the size of the undercut that's got them concerned. The water entering that hole is washing out the back side support of the dam. Nobody can really know the size of that hole by now... They have to risk that, and fill the void with everything they have.

That town is at risk until July.
I'm not sure they will lift the evacuation until they get a peek at the size of the undercut into the dam support below the spillway.
.
 Quoting: Switchback 74039853

Geology.
Water chooses the easiest route.

If you can fill the hole, the water chooses the spillway.

I will be a race between the water riding and filling the void in the spillway.

I have no doubt we will see 5 helicopters dropping material in that hole, while a concrete batch plant makes hot concrete that cures in 1-2 hours, to fill the voids.
All this must be coordinated and completed within 48 hours.

A challenging task, but very possible, once you have the equipment on site and able to transport the material and make the hot concrete.

Right now I'm sure they are assembling the batch plant and gathering the rock.
 Quoting: Switchback 74039853

They will patch the breech as soon as there is enough material hauled onto the site. They need to haul in a 1/2 a mountain of rock , sand, and concrete.

Give them another day to coordinate the mission.
