Switchback User ID: 28086868 ![]() 02/13/2017 11:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm not so sure it's a good idea to display images of the giant undercut that's happening under that spillway. Quoting: Switchback 74039853 It will just freak people out. They may have asked the media to back off so they can fix it... As best they can. I suspect they will drop loads of rock by air, and then a massive amount of concrete which will cure in 1 hour. It's the size of the undercut that's got them concerned. The water entering that hole is washing out the back side support of the dam. Nobody can really know the size of that hole by now... They have to risk that, and fill the void with everything they have. That town is at risk until July. I'm not sure they will lift the evacuation until they get a peek at the size of the undercut into the dam support below the spillway. . Geology. Water chooses the easiest route. If you can fill the hole, the water chooses the spillway. I will be a race between the water riding and filling the void in the spillway. I have no doubt we will see 5 helicopters dropping material in that hole, while a concrete batch plant makes hot concrete that cures in 1-2 hours, to fill the voids. All this must be coordinated and completed within 48 hours. A challenging task, but very possible, once you have the equipment on site and able to transport the material and make the hot concrete. Right now I'm sure they are assembling the batch plant and gathering the rock. They will patch the breech as soon as there is enough material hauled onto the site. They need to haul in a 1/2 a mountain of rock , sand, and concrete. Give them another day to coordinate the mission. . ^^ They will repair it as soon as they have enough material on scene. |

It would have been an easy fix during the drought when the lake was lower. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2402379 He is right. [link to www.sfgate.com] |

User ID: 69169365 ![]() 02/13/2017 11:34 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Some don't want to accept this fact. I am starting a new thread for those who want to discuss this topic seriously. Quoting: LJM77 OP - share some thoughts. I am guessing you mean to say that the spillway will fail. The damn is some distance from the spillway and E-spillway and do not see how the actual damn itself will fail. I have watched several earthen damns and levies fail from liquefaction. So despite all the news today saying that they have avoided further erosion below the emergency spillway by allowing more flow out of the main spillway thereby lowering the lake level that - those efforts have ZERO affect on the substrate soil and the liquefaction that could take place. Don't get me wrong - there is way more eradication of the spillway than can be filled with rocks and concrete at this point. But I think with the upcoming rains and the build up of pressure under the emergency spillway - that is where I am thinking we have failure. I am also thinking catastrophic landslide could happen under the main spillway if they continue at >100kgps outflow. What are you thinking? OKOathkeeper |

MonkBeer User ID: 72126292 ![]() 02/13/2017 11:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How the hell they gonna patch it with the water flowing so powerfully!? Dropping. Cement in? Rocks, half that shit is gonna be washed away!! That won't work... I've worked on water feature repairs, which lol I know doesn't compare to this, but I've used small amounts of hydraulic cement, which dries under water... The stuff works great when you don't have an insane amount of water flowing over it before it dries!! Idk if there is some special technique they use?? |
