I would still kill or be killed in defense of myself or others, but that's it.

I'm struggling to find reason in all this.

An English author a few centuries ago wrote:

"People leading lives of quiet desperation."

The history of humanity has been full of misery and suffering, some people more than others.

Even those humans lucky enough to be born into a happy, comfortable slice of life will still be forced during portions of their life to face the death of loved ones, the suffering or even tragedies striking without notice some of the people around them and, of course, their own mortality.

If people can make it out of here without too much unhappiness, regret, sorrow, pain and anxiety, they'll be damn lucky.

All of this, however, is less likely or more liable to be actually worse because millions of people throughout the US and Europe are now more secular and more disconnected from faith and spirit than ever before.

Yup, life sucks out of the box, and even the rich grow old and feeble and then get robbed at death.

Technology like VR can solve many a problem nowadays, though. Poor people can play at being rich in some video games.

Is that actually the title of one of his works? I have yet to read Tolstoy, but I understand he was a big admirer of Schopenhauer?

I am going to check him out, thank you. (I've been meaning to.)

Re: Why bother, honestly?
Listen OP, I am not paranoid.
There are many role play threads on this site, I've been here for years and seen them. That said I will quit messing with you - and get serious - since you seem legit. Have you thought about discussing with a therapist some of your complex thoughts. Maybe at your baseline you are fighting depression?

Are you exercising regularly? This is very important for mood stabilization.
Too much time on your hands can lead to rumination. You have a lot to offer others - get out there. Walk dogs at the Humane society. Visit old folks at the care home.

If bringing kids into this world or having a relationship is not for you - thats fine. Find your way. Set goals for yourself and keep them. So many books and references out there to motivate a person - seek them.

BTW I am not a man, I am a woman twice your age. Like I said, I been around.

Would you elaborate on what you mean by an essentialist perception?

Thank you very much for the suggestions, I will look into them.

I do think language and complete understanding of terms is crucial for our understanding of the nature of reality.

I guess where I'm not sure that we agree is how, for you, suffering is transient, as is joy. For me, I see it all like a holistic pie: we can have flawless ingredients for 99% of the pie, but you parse out 1% of poisonous ingredients into the mix, and the whole thing becomes suspect.

Suffering seems to have much more gravity than joy. One can build up a lifetime of joys in a positive momentum, only to have it all ruined in one fell drop of the dice. Whereas, a man can have a whole lifetime of suffering under his belt, and live in it everyday, and the passing pleasures of food and drug do not help pay the debt.

Perhaps you should find more uplifting authors?
He is kind of literatures answer to Metallica songs.
A long time ago I worked at an adolescent psychiatric facility over the summer, back when I was considering a psychology degree. Those kids would put on Metallica and cut on themselves. So you know what we did? We confiscated Metallica. You have a choice you can pursue the dark or you can get out into the light. Its up to you. Or listen to Metallica imo that's the cop out route.

Re: Why bother, honestly?
“There is an old Eastern fable about a traveler who is taken unawares on the steppes by a ferocious wild animal. In order to escape the beast the traveler hides in an empty well, but at the bottom of the well he sees a dragon with its jaws open, ready to devour him. The poor fellow does not dare to climb out because he is afraid of being eaten by the rapacious beast, neither does he dare drop to the bottom of the well for fear of being eaten by the dragon. So he seizes hold of a branch of a bush that is growing in the crevices of the well and clings on to it. His arms grow weak and he knows that he will soon have to resign himself to the death that awaits him on either side. Yet he still clings on, and while he is holding on to the branch he looks around and sees that two mice, one black and one white, are steadily working their way round the bush he is hanging from, gnawing away at it. Sooner or later they will eat through it and the branch will snap, and he will fall into the jaws of the dragon. The traveler sees this and knows that he will inevitably perish. But while he is still hanging there he sees some drops of honey on the leaves of the bush, stretches out his tongue and licks them. In the same way I am clinging to the tree of life, knowing full well that the dragon of death inevitably awaits me, ready to tear me to pieces, and I cannot understand how I have fallen into this torment. And I try licking the honey that once consoled me, but it no longer gives me pleasure. The white mouse and the black mouse – day and night – are gnawing at the branch from which I am hanging. I can see the dragon clearly and the honey no longer tastes sweet. I can see only one thing; the inescapable dragon and the mice, and I cannot tear my eyes away from them. And this is no fable but the truth, the truth that is irrefutable and intelligible to everyone.

The delusion of the joys of life that had formerly stifled my fear of the dragon no longer deceived me. No matter how many times I am told: you cannot understand the meaning of life, do not thinking about it but live, I cannot do so because I have already done it for too long. Now I cannot help seeing day and night chasing me and leading me to my death. This is all I can see because it is the only truth. All the rest is a lie.

Those two drops of honey, which more than all else had diverted my eyes from the cruel truth, my love for my family and for my writing, which I called art – I no longer found sweet.”

I don't understand what keeps you people drawn into this life game.

The big reward is stuffing your cock into a germ-infested mucous membrane that bleeds and births more non-consenting babies to be condemned as slaves?

Grappling against the odds and against the atrophy of time, and for what? It all bleeds out through your fingers like handfuls of sand.

You say you are gifting life onto children by burdening them with labor and death.

And then you praise nature and the circle of life, all while organism feasts upon organism, and suffering abounds.

I don't understand.

Someone did all the above to bring you to life so you can ask these questions.

But i think there are some underlying issues you need to attend to before you start looking at others and why they do these "things".

I'm kind of cerebral but not that smart, anyway...

I am grateful and am blessed with the ability to get my joy from great conversations with friends, smelling that beautiful herb (don't smoke anymore lol) and enjoying my critters, enjoying my space in general.

Yet ultimately, wtf...

The sorrows that exist for most of us do not make up for that bit of beauty and gratitude.
