What do you do with them after they stop laying? Soup? Reason I ask- Im in the burbs of Chicago- we can have up to 7 hens if yard is fenced! No roosters though.. Im tempted to f*ck with TPTB and get 7 guinea hens. Ya think roosters are loud?? Harleyevo |

One of the chickens started eating the eggs and I'm really upset. I'm going to have to cull at least 2 before I bring the new ones. User ID: 77085102 United States 12/30/2018 02:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have 16 Japanese silkies. 12 of them are almost 10 years old. They still lay and set constantly. Of the 112old enough to lay, atm 4 are setting on nothing because I took their eggs. It’s too cold for chicks but I still am getting 7-8 eggs every day. Their eggs are smaller but I often have to give some away because these old girls never stop. We never run out of eggs. If you need some broody hens to constantly set , get some silkies. Just remember they are smaller and the larger hens may pick on them. Someone gave me some motherless chicks and I did not have a hen setting at the time. So I waited until dark and put the chicks under one of the most motherly hens. I call her Little Mama lol! In the morning she was talking to them in chicken mommy language and raised them all perfectly. She’s a good hen. :) I love my Silkies Making sammiches great again! USA! USA! USA! |

Im tempted to f*ck with TPTB and get 7 guinea hens. Ya think roosters are loud?? Free range chickens are as tough as a boot. Seriously, you need a pressure cooker. I had one in the crockpot cooking for 3 days. Too tough to eat. If I have to cull, I just bury them in the garden. We gave up on trying to eat them. I have silkies so they are still laying daily at almost 10 yrs. my other hens stopped long ago, they were close to 8 yrs when they passed. But I didn’t do anything when they stopped laying. They gave me eggs for years, they earned their retirement imo. But everyone’s circumstances are different. Making sammiches great again! USA! USA! USA! |

They’re naturally tame and friendly. Plus they are great layers and astoundingly cute. I would post a pic if I knew how. Quoting: Fossy This. I had a silkie for a few years. followed me everywhere and was loving. She died last year. never had another that matched her personality. RIP. |

Their little dog climber it jumped in my yard and I heard the commotion just in time to see it grab my favorite most wonderful little hen and wound her. She died in my arms about 3 min later.
