Negative interest rates will force people to spend their savings or lose it with nothing to show for it. Sure this might help out in the short term, but what happens when people have spent their savings? Mortgage companies make their money from interest, how are they going to do that with negative interest? They won't even be able to keep that money in a bank without taking a loss.
