Rise in UK Covid cases above 1,000 a day breached government target

After the number of tested and confirmed cases rose to 1,062 in 24 hours at the weekend – the first time the daily total has exceeded 1,000 since late June – a senior public health expert said the escalation was “unacceptable, ineffective and dangerous”.

Prof Gabriel Scally, president of epidemiology and public health at the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of Independent Sage, said the government was failing to suppress the virus by its own standards.

“Something’s got to change, otherwise we are really in for an extraordinarily difficult time,” he said.

I held a tad of optimism for them. Diminishing a bit now. :P

They weren't doing any of the social distancing stuff for a some while, like weeks/months. At least they got to live life like normal for a bit... but at what cost.

We'll know how bad it is in New Zealand today in about two weeks. If those 4 are only the tip of the Iceberg it's a different situation then when they are all part of single isolated cluster with internal community spread.

Probably way worse....they knew if they were sick they would get hauled off. They were treated better in Iceland.

Celtic and Aberdeen have had their next two Scottish Premiership matches postponed after their players broke lockdown rules.

Scotland's first minister Nicola Sturgeon demanded the cancellation after Celtic defender Boli Bolingoli flew to Spain, failed to quarantine, then played in a match.

Ms Sturgeon said this was a "flagrant breach" of the guidelines, while Celtic manager Neil Lennon described himself as "livid" after the "incredibly selfish" player went "rogue".

The previous weekend, eight Aberdeen players broke lockdown regulations by visiting a bar together.
