At one point, the bullets were flying so close that we all hit the ground. I realized that I was just as exposed, lying horizontally on a slope, as if I was standing vertically. I saw a bit of a hump and rolled towards it. That's when two 7.62 NATO rounds slammed into where my chest had just been. That was about the closest, but I work in industry and mining so there have been more than a few times. When a piece of loose rock just misses you, the event is over before you knew it began. You can only shrug it off. I live on borrowed time. |

The lab told me it was a "world record in sedimentation rate" (correct term in English?). No memory of the last days of it...just sort of came to after weeks of struggling with high fever, impossible headache, breathing problems and utter weakness as an "outpatient" on the kitchen sofa (lived big back then, family man and all). The fever had suddenly broken, I could finally manage switching on the kitchen TV to watch the news, without too much pain to the eyes. Every channel showed a totally surreal drama of two giant, well known skyscrapers in New York turning to dust, with a lot of people still inside them. Heard the same phrase in Finnish, Swedish, German, French, Russian etc etc: "The world has changed forever!" like a global mantra chant. Absolutely surreal, yet strangely familiar, somehow. Since then, life has been more or less like that 'Jacob's Ladder' movie with Tim Robbins, remember...more absurd by the day. Who knows. |

Almost merged in front of a tractor trailer... twice. Both times were when I was a teenager though. Still learning to drive. I had a pulmonary embolism last year, 25% chance of instant death is listed as one of the "symptoms". Got into a couple drunk fights... |

And a few times no one would have been there to resuscitate me. I suppose I'm lucky the two didn't meet. I don't know what lies they told you, but I can promise they were lies. There's a fine line between training, trauma, and torture. |

Tell you what though, I did 47 mph once on a bicycle and that was way more terrifying. CherryPoodoo |

Was rescued. White water rafting accident, got stuck in a waterfall, was rolling in it and drowning, it finally spit me out and other rafters retrieved me floating down the river, age 40 (also broke my ankle). Another white water accident, was thrown out and went airborne and hit a large Boulder causing a Skull fracture (back of skull) all blood and swelling went external creating a huge bump on back of head, had the swelling gone inward I would be dead, was very confused, couldn’t think etc, was in a foreign country when it happened, was a higher power that kept me alive. Worst pain I ever felt, was in mid 40s. Needless to say, I’ve had too many close encounters so now I just take iit easy, no more pushing the envelope. I was a electronics hobbyist. Same here with street lights. I know they can go off at random times but I always see them go out when I get close.
