I grew up in the country, I ate rabbit meat as a kid.

As a adult I have had 5 pet rabbits, and they are amazing pets. Sweet, intelligent, loving, litterbox trainable, very clean, and so fun. I wont eat rabbit meat again if i can avoid it.

It's like eating a dog for me.


The real shame is most people keep these animals in a pen, neglect them, and they never get to shine with their personalities. Until I owned rabbits as pets, I thought they were like big hamsters, they are so much more!!

I have owned many dogs, cats, rodents, etc, and rabbits are my favorite pet.

This good man (RIP) has a playlist on raising, and preparing rabbits.

In this video he covers cage construction, breeding, and feed costs. I really like his setup, and method of dispatching,and butchering.

He would quickly, and humanely break the rabbits neck, then cut the head off with a pair of PVC pipe cutters.

He would use the vegetables he harvested from his garden, and add it to the rabbit meat, to make stew, which he then canned.

The rabbit manure can be directly added to the garden. It doesn't need to be composted. It has four times more nutrients than cow manure, and doesn't harm the plants roots.

If you live in a colder climate, and grow in a greenhouse, you can keep the rabbits directly in the greenhouse to provide a little extra warmth in the winter.

Chickens are filthy, require grit and feed. Coops get stinking.

I've got no use for Rabbis either, but raising them for meat is unsane.

If you eat meat, you support industries that raise animals for meat.

Im in a rural area , 20 miles from town.. And we are all loaded with lead..

I do suspect things to get bad...

In the 90s I knew a family that had a rabbit farm, big one.. Raised rabbit for meat...

It never caught on...

But if starving, as my grandfather said, as he lived through the depression Era.. You will eat anything, pets included.

He never let that happen again.. He died being almost 400 pounds..

LOL.. He was never going to starve again.. He killed mostly everything on his farm to eat...

O and he smoked 5 packs a day...

He lived life to the fullest..

when i was ki we moved from maryland to grandadas farm in georgia first day he took rooster an chop off head for dinner never fergit rooster ran around headless for about 30 seconds later he was dinner tasted good

rabbits are at the very very bottom of the food chain, and not smart at all... they "freeze" and let predators kill them easily - as if they were willing to die - when you raise them they don't die of worms like the wild ones ... everything eats rabbits ... dogs, cats, snakes, foxes, cayotes, eagles, hawks even coons ... better than killing your chickens or goats.

Chickens are a better choice, logically. Because eggs and more protein.
