I raised New Zealand whites for a while, and it just became too difficult for me to kill them. I got outta the rabbit business after that.

We HAVE 4 FEMALES AND 2 MALES, just lost a litter of 10 mom kicked them out as she gave birth, she must be a libtard.

They eat a lot and cost a bit the 6 of them go thru 25 Lbs a week $15
We are in SoCal LA area so it is hot not good for rabbits, our pens are 8 ft by 4 ft and have at least a foot of dirt for them to tunnel or burrow in to stay cool. Water automatic watering low pressure 5psi and a secondary gravity supply at least 2 per pen

My daughters do the processing! as they started this!

We also have 25 meat chickens to process in a few weeks.

Chopping off their dead is not how you kill them though. Rabbit skulls are actually fragile. They die easily with a blow to the head.

I raise free range meat rabbits - have a 80 acre farm.
I feed (supplement) their food - they eat year round in the yards and fields. I know I lose some to predators but I prefer them to live normal, happy rabbit lives.

Their meat is great - just lacks fat. You MUST supplement YOUR intake of fat when you eat mostly rabbit meat.
Don't make pets of them - if you want a pet - raise it inside like a cat.

Best case is if you have kudzu around where you live typically in the South you can feed rabbits completely on that and they love it.

That being said, rabbits are a pain in the ass. They die very easily if you let them get too hot, they piss everywhere and you have to keep them cool or they die.

We had a shit load tried to do them outside in grow out pens, regular pens you name it.

They also attract wildlife that likes to eat rabbits so you have that fun too.

As far as killing them that is pretty easy I would recommend a Mag flashlight to the back of the neck or the head makes a mess internally if you crush their skulls or a solid karate chop with your wrist bone will do the trick too and save your hands pain.

In a dream world if I could get an aquaponics system going along with some grasshoppers and worms to feed fish and some chickens in chicken tractors for eggs and meat too and like some heifers and a bull and eat the calves and use their manure for a field of corn for the chickens and fish that would be perfect. Have considered raising rabbits for this very reason. Can't raise chickens or pigs in town because they're "livestock." But bunnies are pets...until they're dinner.

My 2 cents worth.

If you have some land and have access to or can harvest your own alfalfa, never having to purchase feed pellets. They are tasty, they are not that bad actually to clean. Way easier than cleaning a gar or spoonbill. But they eat and eat and eat. I had 3 M and 3 F white Texas A&M. They were easily producing more meat offspring than I could have ever kept up with.

But, like I said above. They eat. I don't have land and was dependent on Tractor Supply feed pellets or local Coop. In my scenario it was way not economically viable once feed costs start going up or just lack of supply. That is where all that alfalfa comes in.

Because that issue alone - I switched to Quail. Just as easy to husbandry. I had two pens of 12 hens and 3 roos - I was butchering around 300 quail in the fall every year. And had probably that same amount in eggs, so better yield for me based on feed costs.

Raising chickens is much easier and cost efficient. I would do that in a heartbeat. You can build a coup and have about one third of it above a home made pond full of fish. Chicken poop feeds the fish. You harvest the meat of the fish and allow the rest of the fish to rot to maggots to feed the chicken. Perfect balance! All the fish, eggs and chicken you could ever want!

My grandmother made it through WWII with rabbits, chickens, eggs, corn and hay, plus garden.

Just saying. Keep the skins & tan, and keep the feet for a lucky rabbit's foot.

They are low in fat, and probably only get a few lbs. of meat off one. Seems like one poster said, a lot of energy for little energy in return. Chickens laying eggs sounds better.

Except the furs if you make something from them that is of high quality, you'll fetch a high price :)

Here's a "psychological problem" that's haunted me since I was five years old; I'm now about to turn 72.

It was in the mid 1950's when -as mentioned- I was five years old and my family raised Chickens as a food/egg source. I never really cared for them or even considered them pets - in fact, the big, cranky Rooster terrified me as he'd chase me around the yard, terrorizing with his 3" spurs. Then, slaughter-time came and as my Mom told me what was going to happen -and promised me a nice, fat fried drumstick- I was secretly delighted at their fate. Until I saw it.

It was like something from a slasher movie as both parents and my 15-yr old brother all transformed into monsters before my young eyes and the backyard became a charnal house. And, each one had their own method of killing those birds.

My Dad did what he called "the helicopter": he'd grab the Chicken by the head and then swing the entire body around his head, snapping the neck and sometimes detaching that head as he tossed the dead but still flopping bird aside.

My Mom turned into a vicious ax-wielding maniac as she'd hack away at their throats -rarely doing the job in just one merciful stroke- a wicked grin on her face as she laughed and joked about the blood spattering her apron.

But my Brother was the most evil: he'd place a short chunk of cast iron water pipe on the ground and stretch the Chicken's neck underneath before standing on both ends, the bird screeching and flapping in terror. Then, he'd grab the bird by its feet and jerk upwards, ripping the head off and sometimes leaving a bloody string of entrails dangling from the body as he too tossed them aside.

I never looked at them the same way again and when my Mom brought out that plate of Fried Chicken the following Sunday I got up, went to my room and cried.

That was all nearly 67 years ago and the memory is as fresh today as it was that Sunday.

So OP, here's my advice: if you do raise animals for meat, please send your kids away for the day before slaughtering them. And try not to take as much pleasure in their killing as my own family did.

I have cattle, pigs, chickens and rabbits. They are all difficult to kill, but it's life in this world, everything is someone else's food.

The wife goes crazy on these days of slaughtering and packing the meat, she must think that the meat magically comes to the fridge.

Rabbits are disgusting, as are pigs, and they give little meat, less than chickens, but they eat weeds, and that's easy to get.

I don't know why people think rabbits are cute, they eat their own shit and that's normal for them.

chickens may be a better idea butch.

also, you may look into growing mushrooms. the button mushrooms are super easy to grow and provide some simple protein to complement the chickens/eggs. the button mushrooms can grow on all types of waste, including plant trimmings, cardboard, coffee grinds, lots of weird stuff.
