No, not your image, that you are creating.

The original image of this woman sitting looking at the camera.

Re: A portrait painting of a girl (Updated 2/18)
Lovely and so much talent.

Are you doing oils?

I love watercolors and did portraits in the past. And also acrylic a bit. Right up until 3 kids, all was good. 5 kids and a brain damaged disabled mother to care for, took that away. My art and my spinning/weaving.

But am going to dive in and get the spinning wheel finished I'm creating out of cardboard, paper mache, and wood, and ball bearings. Get my paints out in the spring and paint my ex with my grandson, he asked me to, and go from there. But not sure I can anymore, it might take some time. Used to be able to capture an immediate likeness.

Yep, this is oil paint.

This grissaile was painted with ivory black, titanium white, raw umber, light red, yellow ocher with little to no medium... just a little bit of walnut oil to slow the drying.

Cool!

I'll keep the thread somewhat updated.

I just hope it goes well enough that I actually finish it.

A lot of times I'll get discouraged with a piece and put it aside and start something new.

Underpainting.

Does it mean she will have Auburn or brown hair?

I guess either

but maybe you already know?

she's got a schnoz like Jimmy Durante; but, clearly you have a lot of talent, especially so if you tackle the most difficult of subject matters - portraits.
 Quoting: Reaching

Yeah man, I'm working on making the schnoz a bit narrower.

Because it's an underpainting, I should be able to fix it pretty easily but I hear you.

I have been a lover of skilled art my whole life. One of the 2-3 biggest art festivals in the south was very close to where I lived for decades. I started buying small, relatively inexpensive pieces from about 10-years old, and have continued buying art ever since. It was/is an annual budget item for me. I never meant the schnoz comment to offend you; instead, like other artists and musicians who debut their unfinished works here on GLP, I thought you were looking for early reactions to your piece. I think you took it as such, but, I also attempted to give you high praise for tackling portraits.

Would you mind sharing the size of the piece?

No worries, I didn't take offense.

It's 12" x 12"... not life size but maybe 3/4... a comfortable size to work at.

Excellent underpainting!

My only observation would be the contrast and sharpness of the eyes compared to the rest of the painting, although it does bring the attention to the eyes.

When I paint I like to look at a corner of the painting, and see everything else with peripheral vision, to see what stands out.

Yeah the eyes are the most developed... so they are more accurate.

I paint fairly tightly so a lot of the rest of it will tighten up as I go, but I do want to intentionally leave some of it loose to make it look painterly in some respects.

Often, I'll throw my eyes out of focus to take note of the larger relationships... I think that's what you are doing by looking at the edge of the painting?

I've had models complain about how I painted their nose, and I just don't respond.

Women like to see themselves differently than they really are.

It's even the same with photography. I like to use unusual lighting, which brings out the imperfections, and the models really complain.
