What do you think of Botticelli? Less realism to me but wonderful none the less. Titian is worthy of praise to me as much as Leonardo , Raphael and Michelangelo.

that is excellent work,

reminds me of the mona lisa,
 Quoting: No holds barred

Thanks... a very big influence for this one... pretty obvious but good eye.
 Quoting: BFD

Yes!
I thought Mona Lisa too.
The lips are just beautiful.
Love this.
Well done.

I even like the nose.
It gives it character.

Yep, same thing, like squinting, or going out of focus.

When I used to teach I would tell my students it's more about training your eyes.

It's crazy to think that the best paintings in the world were made by people viewing through squinted or blurred vision... lol.

Re: A portrait painting of a girl (Updated 2/18)
Excellent underpainting!

My only observation would be the contrast and sharpness of the eyes compared to the rest of the painting, although it does bring the attention to the eyes.

When I paint I like to look at a corner of the painting, and see everything else with peripheral vision, to see what stands out.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78551604

Yeah the eyes are the most developed... so they are more accurate.

I paint fairly tightly so a lot of the rest of it will tighten up as I go, but I do want to intentionally leave some of it loose to make it look painterly in some respects.

Often, I'll throw my eyes out of focus to take note of the larger relationships... I think that's what you are doing by looking at the edge of the painting?

I'm not a fan of Botticelli... Da Vinci took some shots at him in his writings as a "painter of blue and gold" or something like that lol.

I love Michelangelo's sculpture, but not so much his painting.

Titian is amazing.

To think he lived to be almost 100 is pretty crazy.

What about Gustav Klimt? His erotica intrigued me. I love his use of gold and symbolism. Would loved to have known him.He was a short man but a mystery no doubt

But, this is the year for that so I'll share one when I get it going.

Well it's about what you want to achieve more than anything.

I just think it's a good idea to start with realistic representations to have a basis to start from, that way you have the skills to add whatever you want into your art, rather than cut and paste, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Art has become more about intellectualizing rather than accurate representations, that and social circles, and in crowds.

The pretty art I create sells, and the artistic social circles turn their noses up at it.

Excellent painting as always but that is quite the bulbous schnoz. Portraits are very hard to do (realistically) but I would put hands and certain textures in the same category of difficulty.

Yeah nose needs to come in.

As to gain beauty.

Long noses are probably best ( better than 2nd Miss Piggy noses )

But read they need to still be in proportion with face.

It looks like all's you did was lighten it. The nose still looks like Marcia Brady's when she got hit in the face with a football.

You said you can move mountains, but still can't get that nose trimmed down.

Also, now that its lighter, she looks like she has a bit of a kool-aid mustache going on the left side.

This is one of the most impressive creations posted on GLP, ever.

Not knowing you or your work, I clicked expecting to see a "good attempt" from an advanced art student in portraiture.

Instead, I was transfixed.

You have captured the ethereal quality that has brought her to life and this can't be taught in a classroom. Your work rivals that of any well-known Master Painter.

Thank you for sharing your gift. I look forward to seeing the finished piece and any others you'd like to share.

I didn't lighten anything, it's just a different exposure setting with my camera.

Look at the width of the bridge of the nose, it's narrower.

I also did a bit more modeling of the tip of the nose but this is the arena to iron these things out before moving to color.

You're far too kind...

Outside of the technical aspects of painting, you're 100% right that having some sort of "taste" or ideal, whether it be in the subjects themselves, or the specific way in which you deviate from nature, all add up to a very specific "look".

The Old Masters thing, that harks back to antiquity at it's root.

It's about 3 days in, I'll probably screw with it for another few days to tighten it up before painting the color layers.

That is, as long as everything works out going forward.

Either way it was fun practice.

 Quoting: BFD

Do you draw freehand or use aids such as tracing paper , light box etc ?
If it was done freehand then painted you did an excellent job
 Quoting: Cath2756

I went straight to paint with this, so no drawing underneath.

That's why the nose is messed up.
 Quoting: BFD

I have to draw in pencil first. With the nose you could get away with just a bit shading down each side and underneath. Nobody is perfect and I think that’s one of the things I like about this painting so don’t change the nose too much or it will just look like any other painting
Excellent work

ChatGP can create art now. You simply type in what you want it to create, and it renders a painting, a photo, an essay, most anything you ask it to do. That's what the AC was referring to, I think.
