Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78551604 When I used to teach I would tell my students it's more about training your eyes. It's crazy to think that the best paintings in the world were made by people viewing through squinted or blurred vision... lol. INFJ/Conservative Artist |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78551604 My only observation would be the contrast and sharpness of the eyes compared to the rest of the painting, although it does bring the attention to the eyes. When I paint I like to look at a corner of the painting, and see everything else with peripheral vision, to see what stands out. Yeah the eyes are the most developed... so they are more accurate. I paint fairly tightly so a lot of the rest of it will tighten up as I go, but I do want to intentionally leave some of it loose to make it look painterly in some respects. Often, I'll throw my eyes out of focus to take note of the larger relationships... I think that's what you are doing by looking at the edge of the painting? Yep, same thing, like squinting, or going out of focus. When I used to teach I would tell my students it's more about training your eyes. So that was what I’ve been doing.I thought it was a detriment I shouldn’t allow myself to do. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke |

Da Vinci took some shots at him in his writings as a "painter of blue and gold" or something like that lol. I love Michelangelo's sculpture, but not so much his painting. Titian is amazing. Would loved to have known him.He was a short man but a mystery no doubt Last Edited by Music muse on 02/01/2023 12:44 PM The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Quoting: eyeDR3 I know you've shown your still life and now a portrait. How are you with landscapes? Landscape is on my bucket list for this year... I've already composed them, just need to actually paint them. But, this is the year for that so I'll share one when I get it going. So that was what I’ve been doing.I thought it was a detriment I shouldn’t allow myself to do. Well it's about what you want to achieve more than anything. I just think it's a good idea to start with realistic representations to have a basis to start from, that way you have the skills to add whatever you want into your art, rather than cut and paste, not that there's anything wrong with that. Art has become more about intellectualizing rather than accurate representations, that and social circles, and in crowds. The pretty art I create sells, and the artistic social circles turn their noses up at it. |

Portraits are very hard to do (realistically) but I would put hands and certain textures in the same category of difficulty. Gen. John B Gordon and Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest were the finest citizen-soldiers birthed in America. |

The nose still looks like Marcia Brady's when she got hit in the face with a football. You said you can move mountains, but still can't get that nose trimmed down. Also, now that its lighter, she looks like she has a bit of a kool-aid mustache going on the left side. |

Not knowing you or your work, I clicked expecting to see a "good attempt" from an advanced art student in portraiture. Instead, I was transfixed. You have captured the ethereal quality that has brought her to life and this can't be taught in a classroom. Your work rivals that of any well-known Master Painter. Thank you for sharing your gift. I look forward to seeing the finished piece and any others you'd like to share. "Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes" "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear" |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 85178963 As to gain beauty. Long noses are probably best ( better than 2nd Miss Piggy noses ) But read they need to still be in proportion with face. Then fix jaw line. Thinner nose but same length. Adjust jawline. A classic beauty. |

Look at the width of the bridge of the nose, it's narrower. I also did a bit more modeling of the tip of the nose but this is the arena to iron these things out before moving to color. https://imgur.com/a/bbwW6hD INFJ/Conservative Artist |

I look forward to seeing the finished piece and any others you'd like to share. You're far too kind... Outside of the technical aspects of painting, you're 100% right that having some sort of "taste" or ideal, whether it be in the subjects themselves, or the specific way in which you deviate from nature, all add up to a very specific "look". The Old Masters thing, that harks back to antiquity at it's root. INFJ/Conservative Artist |

Quoting: BFD That is, as long as everything works out going forward. Either way it was fun practice. https://imgur.com/a/5j4M5vk Do you draw freehand or use aids such as tracing paper , light box etc ? If it was done freehand then painted you did an excellent job I went straight to paint with this, so no drawing underneath. That's why the nose is messed up. I have to draw in pencil first. With the nose you could get away with just a bit shading down each side and underneath. Nobody is perfect and I think that’s one of the things I like about this painting so don’t change the nose too much or it will just look like any other painting Excellent work Last Edited by Cath2756 on 02/01/2023 01:52 PM Cath |
