The answer in relation to overall playing ability and age is of course Hendrix. The overall best player with the most potential if they survived long term was Randy Rhodes. Hendrix was a better player, but Rhodes would have been the greatest of all time if he survived.

He's quite excellent but I have other favorites as well. For me, it comes down to the guitar's voice that the artist creates. Also depends on the mood I'm in as to who is the greatest at that moment.

I think this guy is an absolute monster. He’s well known for the bands he’s been in (currently on tour with the Crue replacing Mars).

One of the best guitarist in the wrold, very well know in the concert and philharmonic orchestras but not in the regular music arenas because he plays mostly classical songs is Göran Söllscher.

All depends on personal preference.

This guys the Van Halen/Dave Mustaine type, often against the grain of the melody.

Melodic is different type, like Queen, ACDC, Randy Rhodes or Accept guitarists. Blends with the melody.

Or you can go riffy like Led Zep where sometimes the guitar solo is like a different song inside the song.

Or Jimi Hendrix and other styles you can't quite pin down.
