Re: Loughner's defense
"The suspect, Jared Loughner, 22, is widely believed to be mentally ill.

It is impossible, at this point, to say with certainty what Loughner's mental state may be."

[link to www.azcentral.com]

This again points out the stark contrast between what is "widely believed" and what can be said with any certainty. Speculations abound as to Loughner's mental state, and that's by design. The people who pulled this off don't want anyone wondering "did he do it?" They just want people wondering "why did he do it?" That's why Badger and Maisch both made a big show of saying things like "why would you do such a thing" and "how could you be so full of hate". That's why Salzgeber waved the gun around and threatened to kill Loughner, to convince everyone around that Loughner did the shooting.

Re: Loughner's defense
This author tries so hard to be objective but fucks it up anyway:

"No one can know what was going on inside of Jared Loughner's head when authorities say he pulled the trigger in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 8, ending the lives of six people and changing forever the lives of many others."

[link to www.mcall.com]

The phrase "authorities say he pulled the trigger" in itself isn't obscenely offensive, but the way it's inserted so clumsily into the sentence smacks of post facto hole plugging. It's so awkwardly written it literally suggests we don't know what was going on in Loughner's mind when he was accused of the shooting. It's obvious the author wants to maintain the appearance of objectivity and only that, just the form, not the substance. This is the same mentality that drives pseudoskeptics to screech at anyone who doesn't vaccinate their children or jam their fingers in their ears and call the police when all the thermite in the World Trade Center demolition dust is mentioned.

"Suddenly, all over the show, I am seeing the word "gossipology" and I don't really know what it means. Plain old gossip is something we all know, largely because we all gossip. We readily exchange titillating tittle-tattle about "other people" that may - or may not - contain a grain of truth.

Gossip tends to be a mix of mild malice or idle curiosity, but it has also become a hugely profitable industry in magazines, radio and television and especially on the internet, where hags of both genders say the wildest and most cruel things."

Re: Loughner's defense
With all the uproar about "mental illness" I thought a bit of perspective was in order:

"People with severe mental illnesses are highly unlikely to become violent toward others unless they have additional risk factors combined with their psychiatric disorder, according to a new study led by researchers at Duke University Medical Center."

[link to www.dukehealth.org]

These "risk factors" all basically boil down to being a victim of violence or drugs that are known to heighten aggression. Loughner cried and got drunk when his father yelled at him. Loughner smoked weed and did hallucinogens, supposedly, neither of which have any reputation for inspiring violence.

Re: Loughner's defense
"It would seem from media reports that Jared Loughner suffers from serious mental problems. What else could prompt a young, intelligent man to open fire on a group of strangers gathered on a street corner to talk to their Congresswoman? What else but insanity or extreme circumstances would lead to such violence?

Whether Loughner has experienced symptoms of mental illness is not for me to say. But I can say that people with mental health conditions are no more likely to commit acts of violence than anyone else. Having such a condition is poles apart from being insanely violent. Only a few people with a specific type of mental disorder are prone to violent behavior."

[link to www.thonline.com]

This editorial piece voices a common belief, that anyone who would gun down people like this is insane. It's a common belief that is suspended when it comes to the police and the military, however. These serial killers are sanctioned and should therefore be venerated.

I've pointed out the video released showing the helicopter gunship mowing down innocent people in Iraq. These mass murderers gleefully performed their tasks, and even joked and laughed about it afterwards just like in the movies. Clearly they're good guys.

This piece basically has the theme that we're all mentally ill, just to varying degrees. I find that to be utter bullshit and I think the author is a fool.

The condition at work here is called cognitive dissonance. People are somehow able to accept mass murder on one hand and revile it on the other. All they need is a scapegoat to sacrifice. Iraqis reading this story probably tell each other "now they know how we feel". This is like a Hollywood style satirical atonement ritual.

With regards to the helicopter gunship video, one wonders why the US military spends so much on those craft if they could just send a dope smoking kid with a Glock into battle with the same effectiveness. Draft all the pot heads and junior college dropouts.

"Sheriff Dupnik will likely be called as a defense witness for Jared Loughner, the shooter in the Tucson massacre, as he has provided Loughner's lawyers with a defense - "vitriol" from talk radio, in particular from Rush Limbaugh - as the source.

Even better for Loughner's defense, President Obama has come to his rescue again providing a testimony in his eulogy speech that Judge Roll had just stopped by for a social visit, not in a business capacity, which keeps Loughner from being charged with a capital crime. Did politics and ideology just trump the judicial system?"

This kid must have read Machiavelli:

"Ironically, one of the defendants who may be affected by the crisis is Loughner. Even though his trial will be held in San Diego, his pretrial proceedings will still be conducted in Phoenix, and those could be postponed while judicial officials deal with the backlog of cases.

Arizona federal courts have seen their criminal caseload jump by 65% in the last two years. The state was already dealing with two judicial vacancies when Roll was killed in the January 8 attack in Tucson, further reducing the number of available judges.

Arizona is not the only state dealing with vacant federal judgeships, as partisan politics in Washington have delayed the confirmation of numerous appointees by President Barack Obama."

[link to www.allgov.com]

You also have to wonder, what could cause such a sharp increase in federal criminal cases? The obvious answer is a sharp increase in federal laws.

"I for one no longer accept the corporate media baloney about a lone crazed gunman, anymore than I believe that Arab hijackers with box cutters had the influence to get NORAD to stand down while they crashed jetliners into the WTC on 9/11. It is my opinion that this was an organized hit on Gabby Giffords and Judge John Roll, two for one. Gabby because she was such a likable, effervescent, beautiful and strong woman, who will now become the next poster child for gun control and increased social controls over law abiding American Citizens. Judge Roll was targeted because he had just ruled and thwarted the administration’s plans to seize the privately held pension and profit sharing plans of the nation, which is really the last piggy bank left to loot in the entire country."

Loughner was a typical kid, by all relevant accounts. He didn't do anything but make a few smartass comments the likes of which we've all heard before by many people who are not only harmless but altruistic. This is all part of the psychological warfare to make people see enemies everywhere except where they exist, in police departments, in military bases, in government offices.

There isn't really any new information about this case coming to light so I don't really have any more to add at this point. Maybe in a couple months when Loughner has another hearing we'll know more, but as far as I'm concerned this is basically over. Loughner will get a speedy trial and be given a lethal injection at the end. That's my prediction, that was Zamudio's prediction on the day of the event, I see nothing that's going to get in the way of that.

Smith rejected the Democrats' request last week, saying the event could weaken the case against the alleged shooter, Jared Lee Loughner.
