User ID: 77310241 United States 06/29/2019 02:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So I am hanging a 40 pound punching bag no biggie. Quoting: LittleMissDictator I bought this wall anchor thingy for it. Problem is I need it to be drilled into studs cause of the weight factor. I have studs in the wall but they are like 12 inches apart. Vertically speaking. There are no horizontal beams. My hanging mount thingy is only about 6 inches across tho. Meaning I can get one screw drilled into a beam however the other part will only stretch to the drywall part. Which will not mount it properly cause it just falls out of the wall on the drywall part with that particular screw. So what I was thinking.... is to go to home depot and have a piece of 2x4 cut to about 14 inches. Then I was going to use that and hammer it into the wall so as to connect both beams and then from there mount a drill my holes into the 2x4 to get more hanging power if you will. Will that work? If not... could someone who knows about this kind of thing please pass along any tips or suggestions to me? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day! In a word...yep! Just to make sure, you mean you are going to use the 2x4 as a crossbeam between the 2 studs already in the wall and use that to mount the bag, right? If so, you are good to go. I figured I'm just putting a beam on the outside of the wall instead of it being on the inside of the wall. Thank you very much! Yes to what you said at the end. Exactly what I was thinking to do. |

That will work brilliantly, no problem! You can also get brackets that are specifically designed to span studs (which should actually be 16" center to center) that will do the same thing with slightly more accuracy, but the cost would be more, though the aesthetic is a bit nicer. But you're definitely on the correct path. ad ignorantiam - The assumption of a conclusion or fact based primarily on lack of evidence to the contrary. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 40546062 I would buy a proper mount, you start kicking that thing and you could do some damage. Yes. My bag did not come with a mount.. so I did a little research before I got the mount I purchased. However lol.. I didn't know I had far apart beams in the wall. I always thought that there were vertical and horizontal beams in a wall structure. Opps! But it is a good mount for bags that are going to be kicked. And it is definitely going to be kicked! lol *high yawwwww Thanks for the tip! |

It's really the same thing, perhaps just a little more appealing from an appearance perspective. You could really use anything so long as the material you are using is strong enough to hold it's shape and strength but the wood stud is the way it's done (internally) when builders want to mount things like light fixtures, cabinets, etc., the only difference is those are inside the sheet rock, yours will be outside...same thing as far as structural strength. You may want to put in two cross members, again if the mounting bracket for the bag will allow it. This is due to the side to side action you will be putting on the anchor, etc. Either way, you should be fine. Ask Alice when she's 10ft tall This is a battle for the future of civilization. Shouldn't you hang a 40lb punching bag from the ceiling? Or don't they make special frames to support the bags? Quoting: Pilgrim001 If it helps... This is what I bought to hang the bag with. It comes off the wall like an arm if you will. I considered the ceiling but then my bag will be to high for me. [link to rdxsports.com (secure)] Thanks for checking out my thread! |

Ok...seeing that I would suggest the 2x4 cross member at the top of the bracket BUT also on the lower ones. If you don't the motion of you hitting the bag will also cause them not to hold. The wall 2x4's have two nails, top and bottom , connecting them to the rest of the wall, plus the sheetrock screws. There are probably trusses in your ceiling, giving better strength. Here is an ebay link for some ceiling swivel mounts. You can adjust the height of the bag with the length of chain that you hang it by. I wouldn't hang it in the center of the room, but within 5 ft or so of the walls. Last Edited by Bennder on 06/29/2019 03:26 PM I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you. You'll need the same type cross member for the lower brace as well. You might use 3" screws to mount the 2x4's onto the studs ( rather than nails). :nailedit3: Last Edited by Trained Noticer on 06/29/2019 03:29 PM For those who believe, no proof is necessary.
