Anonymous Coward User ID: 74574047 United States 06/07/2017 01:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A Resume has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a person would be an excellent candidate for a manufacturing position. Quoting: Jai_Guru_Jesus_Om You are essentially requiring mastery of English to prove you can notice detail on a block of wood or whatever it is you do. If you were as smart as you want your applicants to be, you'd judge them based on their motivation and ability to be trained to DO WHAT YOU NEED THEM TO DO and nothing more. Many times an illiterate person will do a far greater job at manufacturing than someone with a PHD in English. Seriously, I think you might just be trolling with a post this stupid. I agree Just read an ad on our online local ad site. Young lady looking for kids to watch. Ad full of misspelled words, bad punctuation. Sentences that made no sense. While the girl might be great with kids, I couldn never comfortably leave my kids there. How could I trust her if I had to leave instructions on any special diet, medications, or care my child might need, if she can't even spell? Any halfway educated person would also know punctuation can be critical when deciphering instructions. I might not always be immediately available for her to clarify things. And there are times when time may be of the essence. Point is, it does make a difference. If I'm going to entrust someone with a job in a business that I worked my ass off to build, a job that I'm ultimately responsible for their safety and the safety of my self, others, and the safety of consumers. I don't want some fucking idiot that isn't smart enough to fill out a resume. |

I am not requiring mastery of English. Just basic spelling, sentences that make sense, and some sign that at least a little effort was taken. The resume is the first point of contact with a potential employer. If I did NOT judge the candidate based on the resume, I would be spending all my time interviewing. He's got a point OP. 30 years ago, resumes were reserved for jobs that required a degree. Nothing in manufacturing or the trades required one. I never needed one until the 2000's....just sayin' |

If he hired people just because there is need out there and he took it on himself to do all the training for lazy people, his business would soon be in ruins. Then lots of people would lose their jobs including the pathetic people looking for a free ride. Why would he tie his future to a lazy person Lazy people don't show up, they get out of work as much as possible and do not have pride in themselves......so why would they take pride in a job? wkk |

The work is not difficult, but quality and consistency is paramount. We are entering into our busiest time of year, and steady growth combined with losing one of our senior bench techs has caused me to run some ads (after spreading the word around to friends and associates). I have been involved in the manufacturing business for about 30 years, and have seen thousands of resumes. The last couple weeks I have been reviewing a couple dozen resumes a day. What I am seeing now, is stunning and disappointing. When did people stop learning how to compose a sentence? When did they decide that a resume composed of two sentences is somehow complete? The poor level of spelling, grammar, and frankly effort has me perplexed and perpetually face-palming. So far, I have two resumes that were not immediately round-filed. Just two. If this is the current state of our potential work force, we are in trouble. Not only is your post a copy and paste but it is also BS You cannot say you go through dozens of resumes and then train people on how to write resumes and be short of applicants after coaching them.\\ Obviously if you are going through dozens then you failed on the resume skills you taught them, since resumes to you is the key factor |

Just put out the job requirements and give personal interviews to real human beings. Use your own judgement as to whether a person can do the job. Regular jobs don't require more than a couple sentences. Resume's are the crowning glory of BS. Or, stop at Office Depot and purchase a package of gold stick-on stars and some red lead pencils. You know what you can do with them. No, don't put them there, grade the papers silly. . |
