Every single person I've ever asked about that has said they "accidentally skip" items. I know I do. I've thought about it and I'm sure the big wigs at Walmart (for instance) know that people are skipping items. They have done the math and even if the average person steals a couple dollars worth of crap, it's still way cheaper than paying employees. So in my my it's fair game, they expect it so I do it.

I've always found it much easier to covertly grab a 99 cent sticker off of something on sale and put the sticker on top of the bar code of something very expensive, that way you still scan it and nobody notices.

Here's a little insight into Africa for ya.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING can, or will ever be sef-checkout here.
We don't pump our own gas; we have useless attendants by the hundreds of thousands getting in the way instead. We don't scan our own groceries, because not only would nobody pay for them, they'd run off with the hardware. When you get to the door there's usually a private security firm who check your slip against what you've got in your cart.

The only thing that's safe from theft here is, uh... Ummmmm, the uh...

I'm going to petition our bigger chainstores for self-checkout and see how they respond.

Yes, they have those in Oz too. I wasn't shocked to see it because I've traveled to Europe (many years ago) and often found un-manned stalls where you just take your strawberries or whatever and leave cash in a box.
Here, they'd steal everything down to the structure itself.
