I'm sure the NSA was collecting metadata on at least a few of the passengers. Why cant they "ping" a phone or release the last location of the phone.

It is an odd thing. I think, like most people they have their phone in Airplane mode or off. At least you're suppose to. And on a long flight like that, over water, it would just do dead trying to find a tower. If you look at the radar where they lost contact it was right over the water. The plane was WAY to far out over the ocean for any cell phone to communicate with a tower.
If it was an immediate explosion I don't believe anyone would have the time or the senses to power their cell phone on (I'd be praying, thinking of my family and not worried about a stupid phone). So why are they ringing? Even if you get to cruising altitude you still have it in airplane mode just to save power. Why didn't the pilot use the satellite phone? In the first class area they have satellite phone too.

One article said the plane dropped 650 feet. Would that put them under the radar? If so, then a hijacking would seem more plausible.

Every time I saw someone if the phone is off it goes to voicemail.

You give the government way too much credit. They do collect data but knowing how government messes everything up, I bet they have a very hard time "finding" someone as apposed to having a marked target and keeping track that way.
The government is still working bugs out of their facial recognition software and the date base it syncs with. Their data collection now is just tons of unsorted data.

I just tested my cell, called it from my landline...I have a Verizon Cosmo. I took the battery out and it went straight to voice mail , same for when I just turned it off.

Called my husbands phone...he has a AT&T Xenon. Same thing... he turned it off and it went straight to voice mail.

Now who knows what happens if a phone is blown up or soaking in water. I'm not going to test that out ! I'm guessing it would mess up the battery and it would go straight to voice mail.

Now I know some of you are saying that it doesn't matter. Yet every phone I have ever called that has been turned off has gone straight to voice mail.

To me ringing cell phones means that this plane crashed on land and the cell phones survived or something even weirder is happening.

So at least a couple hundred floating seat cushions on that plane, nothing found. Where the hell is this plane?

I've read on several sites that if a phone in airplane mode that a call will go straight to voice mail for the person making the call. Same goes for when the phone is turned off. Calls will go straight to voice mail for the person making the call. Google it and read for yourself.

I just tried to call my iphone in both airplane mode and with it off off and both times it went straight to VM.

Those phones are on somewhere. Either the plane crashed on land and the phones are still intact and were turned on before impact or the owners are still alive or the plane was hijacked and the phones are still intact and were turned on before being taken from the passengers. .

Very true! Their power is an illusion. Don't get me wrong, our war machine is a well oiled machine, but everything else is a joke.
