Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
PS: on storage of honey-does it matter if it's a large, 2lb container-sealed well; or are the smaller containers better for long-term storage, (same for Maple Syrup.
Also, although my LTS wheat flour and cornmeal-and all my other grains actually, are in plastic bags inside the plastic bins-one thing I do for ALL of these types of supplies is put Dried Bay Leaves in and around the containers it's in. Since I began doing this, I haven't had a single bug in or near ANY of my baking stuff. Well, at least as long as it is bug & worm-free when I get it from the store. I've had some problems with the store I have to use because they're the only ones who deliver-all kinds of creepy-crawlers have dropped in for a (SHORT) visit!! ;)

Honey as long as it is real, unfiltered will last forever. Doesn't matter how big the container is. Keep in a cool dark place.

Have read and seen plenty about storing wheat, rice and other grains and flours, bay leaves don't work for keeping the bugs out. The bug eggs are already in the product. When you seal them up in a container, they just hatch and eat to their hearts content. Many people have opened containers full of wiggles. Ewwww and yuck!

Flours will last 5-15 years depending on how you store them. Off the shelf as they were in the grocery store, 5 years. Packed in vacuum bags better but you can't take all the air out of flours. You can't compress to a hard brick. It can cause a type of fungus to grow that is deadly to humans. Stop the vacuum sealing before it is a hard brick, seal and place in the freezer for a week or two before storing to kill off the eggs. Packing in Mylar with an oxygen absorber will make everything last the longest, keeping it the freshest. Mylar is for LTS.

I learned with rice, that it will poke holes in the Mylar. When I put up the next bunch, I will vacuum seal it first, then put it into Mylar. This will give added protection to the Mylar and keep it from failing.

If you plane to keep some beans, wheat and other things for sprouting, you can't add an oxygen absorber. The germ will be killed and won't sprout. Just seal and rotate every few years with fresh seeds and beans to sprout.

Remember that baking power only lasts for about 1 year maybe up to 18 months if you are lucky. LTS is baking soda and cream of tartar which make baking powder. Old baking powder makes your food bitter. Two parts cream of tartar to one part baking soda = 2 teaspoons cream of tartar to 1 teaspoon baking soda. Both cream of tartar and baking soda have an infinite shelf life!!

I actually saw this first on a video and then had to look it up. Awesome. Knox Gelatin has an indefinite shelf life without special storage. I have had some that I know was at least 30 years and it was still just fine after sitting in the cabinet above the stove all that time. Every house we moved into we put that box right back over the stove.

[link to www.livestrong.com]

Prepare your recipe up to the point where you would add the eggs.

Measure 2 tbsp. of warm water per egg into a small bowl.

Sprinkle one packet of Knox Gelatine per egg over the water. Mix thoroughly with a whisk or fork.

Add the gelatin and water mixture to the other ingredients and mix as directed by the recipe.

No way 30 gallons will last 4 people a month it won't last a week.

bare minimum is 8 glasses of 8 fl oz of water a x 4 is two gallons a day minimum that's 60 gallons a month just drinking and you'll be hurting with that low of intake if you do anything slightly active and sweet any, I'd say 90 gallons just to drink a month to be safe and half again for cooking say 150 gallons total a month just to stay alive and cook. for 4 people right?

I still think thats on the low side but some correct me if I'm going in the wrong direction.

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
Shelf Life. The moisture removal has a direct impact on the shelf life. Most dehydrated products like dried fruits, vegetables, powders and TVP; have a shelf life of about 15-20 years. However, dehydrated items like honey, salt, sugar, hard wheats and oats have a 30-year shelf life - sometimes longer.[5] Freeze-dried foods will have a longer average shelf life. Freeze-dried fruits, vegetables, just-add-water meals and real meats will have a 25-30-year shelf life.[6] Ideally, all of your food storage would be stored at a temperature of 60 degrees or lower.

Nutritional Content. According to research by the American Institute for Cancer Research[7], freeze-dried foods retain the vast majority of the vitamins and minerals found in the original food. However, when compared to fresh fruits and vegetables, freeze-dried foods did lack in some vitamins - like Vitamin C - which break down very rapidly.

Dehydration doesn’t change the fiber or iron content of food. However, dehydration can break down vitamins and minerals during the preservation process and retain less of their nutritional value when compared to freeze-dried food. Dehydration tends to result in the loss of Vitamins A and C, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin.[8]

So, is the point of this thread to get people not to trust God? Do you think you can store up enough water and food for a month? What will you do if your neighbors come knocking at your door, dying of hunger and thirst?

Go to God, everyone, not to a misguided shill. Lord, please have mercy on this precious one, as s/he knows not what s/he does.

God will get you through every circumstance. Trust Him! He may tell you to stockpile, etc. He may not. The beauty part? He knows the future, and loves you totally and completely - He's just waiting for your call.

Not being judgmental but, I believe there is a saying "God helps those who help themselves". Yes, I'm a Christian, but I also believe that as much as we need God and Jesus in our lives, we also need to take care of ourselves as well. There is nothing wrong with being prepared. No offense intended.

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
Knowing that everyone's needs are different, I would still like to make a basic list of things people need to HAVE on hand. To this basic list, each can then add to it how they want for their needs. We all know we need food, water, guns, ammo, warm clothing, etc but I would like everyone to think about this long and hard.

What do we have to have? Basic things to survive no matter what happens; economic collapse, CME/EMP, pole shift, or just whatever! This basic list will work for it all. You work to get 3 month worth, then you push to 6 months. For LTS you want to have 1 year of this. It last 30+ years and you don't have to worry about rotation, except when you add to it.

Basic Stay At Home Supplies:

Water

Food

Gun(s)/ammo

3 months worth - Multi Vitamin, basic OTC meds/herbs, Prescription meds

1st Aid Kit - this should be a big kit and not one of those that goes into a car.

Sewing supplies

Toilet paper - enough for each person for 3 months

A tent to set up in your home in case the power is out and it is cold. Body heat will keep you warm.

Candles, lanterns, flashlights and tons of batteries. Solar powered yard stakes, the kind you buy to decorate your yard or to light a pathway. These would be great to provide light. Set them out in the day time and use during the night!

If cold weather, a way to enclose one room to keep all the heat in there. Remember to have one small area to vent so carbon monoxide doesn't build up.

Feminine hygiene items. Make some washable pads (old towels and wash cloths are very absorbent) to use over and over. Our girls are not use to this, so keep a diaper pail and bleach water to help them out.

Baby needs if you have small ones. Cloth diapers and plastic pants. Same thing, get a nice diaper pail and remember bleach water.

A way to cook food without power

Soap - laundry and hands

Basic hygiene - deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, razor, shaving cream, lotion, toothbrush and paste, etc. Stuff you use everyday but 3 months worth.
Extra glasses, contacts, sunglasses, eye wash

This is in two sections. One is for staying home and one is for getting out of dodge when you have no other choice. As a family we are not going anywhere. We don't have a location to go except for one and at that location, there really isn't room for us. We will go there if we have to but that means leaving so much behind. Everyone want to stay in their own home. It doesn't always work out that way. Murphy has a way for popping up, or as Mongoose and I say, the luck of the Irish happens!!

Get out of Dodge basic supplies:

10 gallons of gasoline (more if you have a way to store it safely)

BOB (bug out bag for each person)

Atlas for your Country

Maps for your area and surrounding states. These should be recreational or topographical maps so you know how to navigate the back roads and back country. You are bugging out, you sure don't want to be seen or using major roadways.

Water - very heavy, you need to know how to find more and make it safe!

Food - food is heavy so you want to go with MRE's and dehydrated good.

Weapons/ammo

Basic camping gear

Sleeping bags for each person

Lots of lighters, waterproof matches, steal fire starter.

Compass

Ways to purify water.

Small folding shovel
Good strong knife

Steel wire - many uses
Duct tape

1st Aid kit
Sewing kit

Kids need their special toys. Don't forget this or it will make it more traumatic for the little ones.

You may have to hoof it, so a collapsible wagon with those large balloon tires would be smart and allows you to carry more, or those kiddos who just can't keep up. To me this is basic, others might not agree.

Soda bottles do degrade and a better option is food grade water barrels that can be purchased in many different sizes and can be used to collect rainwater although an underground cistern is a better solution for collecting rainwater.

Additionally if you have a water well system then a well bucket would solve some water collection issues along with a filtration system such as Berkey water filters.

Thank you for this info. I prep on the cheap. The Berkley's are just too expensive for us at this time. We do know how to use a sand filter and this will also help when collecting rain water from the roof that is tiled in asphalt. Your roof, especially if asphalt is a toxic bio-hazard. This water must be filtered, bleached and boiled. Putting it through a sand filter alone will make it almost drinkable, boiling and/or bleaching will take cake of the rest.
 Quoting: whiteangel

I think I read somewhere one time that you can filter water with charcoal. I forget, or lost, the article or yt. Hopefully, someone can dig it up. I'm thinking a big bag of charcoal (like you'd cook with) is cheap enough, and no one would question it, or take it, not realizing you are using it to filter your water.

Throughout the Bible it shows many examples of people preparing because GOD told them to. We are to be able to take care of ourselves and not to rely on the rulers of the land. If you read the Bible you know things are going to get bad. By trusting the Lord, who has shown us to be prepared physically and spiritually, we can then call on Him for help.

Thanks AC appreciate it.

Look up "sand filtering". A layer of charcoal will go a long way in getting rid of the nasties. Boiling after and you will have good water.
