"Feeder fish" here are like ten for a dollar or something. Most if not all will live, and they grow fast. Pigs, though. Constantly hungry. Good thing their food is cheap!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Maybe Sandman1 is thinking about fish now. Wading pools are on clearance now... run the effluent from the hydroponics to a pool, give the fish a chance, filter the effulent back through the plants... can't be as simple as that? I hope there's a Youtube video in the future.
 Quoting: Lowkey Cyberpunk

The blue totes from Walmart with white rope handles are perfect for fish, and deep enough to keep them protected from bird predators. The fish make the nastiest, filthiest, most disgusting wonderful rich fertilizer for all my fruit trees, berry bushes, veggies, flower baskets.

They are a pleasure to watch, but that lasts about two days. Disgusting pigs are constantly hungry. They even ate the plants I put on the surface to give them shade and a place to hide - can't think of the name of it but it's illegal to sell or import in this state because people bought it and threw it away when done with it - so now it clogs waterways terribly. I always ask someone to grab me a handful from a ditch or someplace with water in the spring. This year they ate all of it!

I changed their water and scrubbed everything clean last weekend. Two days later I couldn't see the bottom and now can't see past a third of the way down, because of the yuk they make!

Great water for hydroponics, but I wouldn't know how to do that. The "pool" is on my deck and they do fine even in freezing water. If the surface freezes solid, and it has, I'm told not to break or do anything to the ice - it will do something to their oxygen supply, apparently, so I just wait til it melts, and they are just fine.
 Quoting: Pooka

I don't have any cats, I should! My daughter Just moved to Vegas she took her dog, A great watch dog, not a working dog he wants to play with everything way to rough and aggressive .

I have done the fish and will again, 5 years of it. I am going to build a perpetual garden with a 20k gal pool pond, with solar powered pumps and air.
Systems I have run, Tilapia, Aquaponics 325 gal IBC totes grow trays, recycling system or closed loop, with apx 35 adult 5 LBs Tilapia.
Works great just not in the summer here too hot! even with shade cloth! It does not produce enough or high enough PPMs of neut's for plants requiring more than 1300 PPMs works great for cool weather plants, Leafy greens ect in a recycling system or closed loop, Any higher it becomes unhealthy for the fish. So I used water changes weekly, Biweekly ish, added filtration FX6.

Asian Tiger Mosquito
This little tiny bugger has take over this area, It is bad! They do not need standing water to grow in! They lay eggs where it is likely to get wet (eggs are viable for years) once they get wet they hatch and go airborne! They love the sun in the heat of the day, You wont find them in the shade!
Sprays kill them, But they are replaced almost instantaneously.

So until I figure this out, No watering anything! Well except my fruit trees!

Love to have ya! I got 1 dog he is a working dog, he wrangles the escapes rabbits and chickens he is great!

I had to turn the water off to the garden as I just got a huge water bill, It is a 2month bill almost 2.5k for Electricity, Water and trash!

The hydroponic shut down also, We have a new pest in So Cal it is called Asian Tiger mosquito, It is a tiny little bugger that thrives in the daylight, I have been trying different measures to control them, Nothing safe for kid and pests so far, I have not tried fire yet!

Fire is always the solution. You know, because it purifies.

But traditionally a light oil on the surface will suffocate larvae, I don't know how that would effect your hydroponics. Pond management of mosquitoes would include fish that would eat the larvae, might be an excuse to add an aquaculture component. For science.

I have a 60'x40'x4' pond in front of my house. Since putting about 60-100 goldfish in it. Mosquitoes around my house have dropped dramatically. At least by 90%.I also made a home built filter /re-circulation pump.

Why the West Nile Virus is a Biological Weapon

[link to www.modernghana.com (secure)]

Therefore, by now, everyone has heard of “West Nile Virus,” that biological weapon of mass destruction that the USA sold to Iraq in 1985. The Centers for Disease Control and a biological sample company, the American Type Culture Collection, sent strains of all the germs to Iraq.

Iraq used them to make weapons, including anthrax, the bacteria that make botulinum toxin and the germs that cause gas gangrene, the records show. Iraq also got samples of other deadly pathogens, including the West Nile virus.

Mosquitoes in Flagstaff test positive for West Nile virus
Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS) officials found mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) in an area south of Lake Mary Road in Flagstaff. This is the first positive WNV in mosquitoes in Coconino County this year.

SV40 is believed to suppress the transcriptional properties of the tumor-suppressing genes in humans through the SV40 Large T-antigen and SV40 Small T-antigen. Mutated genes may contribute to uncontrolled cellular proliferation leading to cancer.

To go further and confirm this unbelievable admission, Assistant Professor of Pathology at Loyola University in Chicago Dr. Michele Carbone has been able to independently verify the presence of the SV40 virus in tissue and bone samples from patients who died during that era.

He found that 33% of the samples with osteosarcoma bone cancers, 40% of other bone cancers, and 60% of the mesothelioma’s lung cancers all contained this obscure virus.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Personal story - I hit a jackpot today! At least for me it's a jackpot!

I went to the thrift store for something today. Half-price day - Monday and Thursday so I rarely go other days. Found what I was looking for, plus a couple other things, and happened to walk by the bins of blankets. Really full bin, obviously recently stocked. Right on top of the stack, unbelievable!

I use a light summer quilt on my bed, and a puffy [not feather] winter comforter. No blankets. The only blanket I own is a small army cot cover, kept in a plastic case in the vehicle for emergencies.

Been wishing for a warm, heavy blanket in case things get really cold, either through the Maunder Minimum or a power outage.

So on top of the stack, a WOOL BLANKET!!!! Unbelievable! They fly out of the store, so it was obvious it had just been brought out from the back with the rest of the stack. Immediately I picked it up, lest someone come along and snatch it up, which easily could happen. Wool is highly desirable!

A woman was shopping near me, and I asked her if she believed the blanket was wool, since I could not find a tag saying so. She turned out to be a quilter and very familiar with all fabrics and fibers. Yup, we agreed, wool. It's very large - at least a double bed size, which is the size bed I have. Could even be queen or king - haven't layed it out yet as I will launder it before doing anything with it.

So the cost - tag said $36 something. Half price day, remember. Still that was a chunk. When I went to check out, I pointed out to the clerk that there was no tag stating it is wool. She contacted her boss, who said to reduce the price to $30. That's only a little difference, but still worthwhile, so I have a huge wool blanket for $15! What a blessing!

The kicker? It's blue, my favorite color and matches my bed linens, bed skirt, and comforter.

Do remember, people, all the good things about wool - continues to insulate even when wet, for example. With the mini-ice age beginning, it's a good time to see what you have to keep you warm, and wool should be on the top of the list! Remember not to use cotton for winter, odd as it sounds.

Boy, do I feel fortunate! God is good! I did not expect to ever find another wool blanket I could afford just because they have become so expensive even used. Lucky me! Now you go get lucky on wool, too!

I gotta get a stock trailer. I can sell those cabritos at the Mexican Flea Market in about 30 minutes.

I check the Free section of Craigs List several times a day and click on "posted today".

Best deals are gone in an hour or less.

Mmmmm, BBQ cabrito! They make great jerky too. The meat is lean like venison.

We are quiet but we are vigilant. Looking to get some bulk oat seed on sale this holiday weekend. Just had a good discussion about finances with my better half, had to explain that the money that I get from selling my plasma is mine to do with as I see fit and not to fill some consumer blank that she has. It's a weird thing to explain. It's better if you have like 18 buckets of preps behind you to help explain what you are spending your money on. Never even mentioned the 12g shotgun or all the ammo that I've bought. Or all the vehicle repairs that I've made on the same blood money. This is all quiet money that she is unaware of. There's more, I won't get into it because I'm tired of money.

Lost a goat last night to a predator.

A lizard shorted out my electric fence and so the predator was able to enter.

That is a problem with electric fences, e.g., wildlife or plants shorting them out. I have to check the fenceline after every storm to remove branches that have fallen on it.

BTW, not a problem with cows and large livestock. Coyotes and bobcats cannot kill them.

I went out hunting the predator which I think is probably a large bobcat tonight with a rifle and light, but no luck.

Wifey says put the goats in the chicken yard at night to protect them. Good idea which I will pursue.
