Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
This thread is amazing! Is it better to take Vitamin C powder or tablets? I want to build up my immune system and prevent cytokine storm.
 Quoting: Boo Boo Kitty

For that purpose, use ascorbic acid. It is a powdered or crystallized form of Vitamin C, and very inexpensive compared to the tablets.

Start with one teaspoon, mixed with juice of some kind. Add one half tsp at a time, until you reach bowel tolerance, then back down just slightly.

To make the taste less acidic, mix equal amounts of baking soda and ascorbic acid in a little of whatever you are going to drink, and stir until the fizzing stops, then pour into your juice.

One teaspoon ascorbic acid is 5,000 milligrams.

Glad you like our thread. Welcome here!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
As I have related earlier on this thread, I lost everything I owned and went BK 15 years ago when I got scammed while buying a company.

However after that tragedy, I managed to buy a BK company for ZERO with the cooperation of the IRS. That company owed the IRS over $200K and I helped the IRS recover the outstanding receivables.

Worked 7 days a week, 14 hour days, for a number of years. For the first few years it was beans, rice, cheapest pork, oatmeal, and cabbage. Worked and saved my way to solvency again.

Now, I am semi-retired on my farm while my kids run the company. Zero debts.

When the CV news hit GLP back in Jan. my wife, The Queen, said, "I want a deep freezer and a milk cow".

I blew through my savings fast, but we are now prepped for a while.

When I was shopping for Jersey cows, I found out that no one wants Jersey bull calves. Ended up with 2 cows in milk and 5 calves. All but 2 of the calves are in the deep freezer now.

In one package deal, I ended up with a Zebu bull as well. As soon as he has bred both cows for sure, he will go into the deep freezer as well.

Considering the price of beef these days, that bull will be an excellent investment. Will probably get about 700 lbs. of meat off him as well as the soup bones that The Queen loves to cook with. Will share meat with all of my kids.

Slaughtering and butchering a large animal is no fun, lots of work.

For those of you who have even a back yard, look at Craigs List for cheap animals to slaughter.

It pays off well.

Just a word of advise to all preppers, if the SHTF, cut your meals down to one per day.

You don't want to be the only fat person in the food lines later on, and may tip those watching that you have a stock of food.
 Quoting: Storm2come

Interesting that you say that. Our family already (and has for many years) only eat one meal a day.
If we get hungry, we'll just snack on a carrot or two or left-overs from the night before.
 Quoting: Major Doom

Why has your family chosen to do this? I think it is unusual, isn't it? Glad it works for you -and you are probably all quite slim, right?
 Quoting: Pooka

I suppose the main reason is to condition ourselves to be able to get by on one meal per day. We don't eat a lot, just an average meal. We're also experienced with living with no running water, no electricity, no phone service, etc as we've done it for two years. It's one thing having the knowledge to do it but a whole different ballgame actually experiencing it. Take, for example, the show "Naked and Afraid." There have been a number of people who had the knowledge to survive in a crisis situation but when it actually came down to doing it, they were not prepared at all and had to drop out to go back to their warm little "civilization" box.

In a total meltdown and collapse of society, many will not make it, even some that have prepared in advanced. One of the greatest challenges that many will face is the preservation of food, such as eggs, meat, dairy, etc. And one must not forget, all civilizations of the past have collapsed. The current will to, eventually. We are not immune simply because of technology. And technology of the past, such as that of the Colonial period, once forgotten, cannot help you sustain a satisfactory life.
DOOM is what you make of it.

Terces Egassem, thank you for these threads!

I did not purchase any cowpeas and now wish I had! To think even the leaves are high protein - and protein will be harder and harder to find - so now I know. If there ever is another opportunity to prep, which is questionable at the moment, I will definitely be acquiring black-eyed peas!
 Quoting: Pooka

If you live in a state where kudzu grows wild you have all the free food you need year round and if you consume all parts of the plant you get all the essential amino acids (complete proteins). Kudzu is considered a noxious weed but it may be a blessing in disguise from east Texas to Florida.

I went to the store too. There were a lot of people for a Wed morning, no shortages, end caps full of Lysol etc.

I like to spread my shopping around so no one asks silly questions. The woman ahead of me this morning had a CART full she had mega amounts of all kinds of cold meds lol the checkout lady kept saying, do you have room for all of this in your car...this is a lot...blah blah blah, the lady just said I cleaned my cabinets and need to restock. If you are one, you recognize one.

I think everyone in the store had bleach in their cart

First thing is congratulation! YOu are now in great position to help others who may not have prepared!

If the outer casing of the MRE looks proper - no stains, breaks, etc, open it and look carefully at each individual part and verify similar safety features.

Want to sell me some Mountain House stuff at a terrific price?

What a price - unbelievable! Did you check dates on them? Are these the newer version with heaters in them?

I cannot recommend eating MREs regularly - they will give you indigestion and constipation, and don't really have all the nutrients for a person to live on. On the other hand, what a great occasional treat or easy meal.

Let us know what you think when you start checking them over and Congratulations again!

Here the cards are filled throughout the month, I think depending on first letter of last name. Nevertheless, I think it will be a harsh shopping time, especially after potus speaks tonight. Even if he still says it's all handled, or whatever nonsense he may say, I think the fact that he is addressing the subject twice in a week will have more eyes opened to the facts, and shopping like madmen and madwomen shall commence. We are certainly reading about a lot of empty shelves already.

The wise are prepared, and have been for some time. That is my situation. I would just like one more pass around a few stores for last minute "would be nice to have" type items. Definitely will not go out without gloves, mask, eye protection. Not anywhere.

Learned last week that in this most unlikely of all small towns, we've already had a case of the virus, and the person was treated in our very small hospital. Odd, hmm? Of course it is kept a secret - I just happen to know somebody who knows somebody at the hospital.

As an aside - seems so very wrong to me that the disease can be hidden from the public - we don't need names or other personal information, but it should have been announced that the virus is right here in the midst of us. Wouldn't you think? Fiddle -I don't like the way many things are done these days.

Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Continuation of another thread of wonderful people with the best ever ideas for practical prepping even for those with little money.

We discuss power outages including CME and EMP, heating and cooking methods, first aid, foods; we run disaster scenarios to see if we know what to do.

This is probably the only prepping thread a person would need, whether long-time prepper here to share, or newbie prepper here to learn and everyone in between.

Welcome!! Join us! Learn! Teach! Enjoy!!

What you need to put in a good medical/first aid kit is listed on Page 99. Copy or even add to the list there.

Discussion of hand-held HAM radios, especially Baofeng, begins on page 145.

Good afternoon. I have a few questions for you all if you could help. I will read through the thread too. I am quite young so I have not yet experienced an event like what is about to occur, and I want to protect myself and my family, especially because I am highly asthmatic.

If something like this is to happen,
what is the most realistic amount of time we should be preparing supplies for? Immediate future is nice, but we do not all have a good savings or tons of money laying around.

Me and my boyfriend are going to go get lots of water this weekend, in 5 gallons, and nuts and some canned goods. and today I am going to go get medicines and some basic wound care stuff, face masks (I need them since I am asthmatic)..
Any advice would be amazing because I get confused by these things and really want us to have a fighting chance because
I have been watching this and I know it is about to hit. At least he has multiple weapons too.
