A new path to look in to: I recall reading once that lightening strikes can make tongues and eyes completely dissolve out of bodies. I'm currently trying to find some kind of evidence this can happen. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

The tongue is the strongest muscle in the human body. It is also the only muscle that works without the structural support of the human skeleton. It is somewhat attached to a bone in the back, but the bone is not part of the skeleton. The technical term for this is "hydrostal" muscle.

When we see a human tongue we are only seeing the outer 2/3 of it. The inner one third is somewhat down the throat and difficult to see. Of how we wish Boris the Renaissance autopsy doctor had gone into some detail regarding poor Dubinina's tongue. All we were told was that "it was missing".

All the more reason why this strong tongue muscle removal is so hard to reconcile!

I still can't find any examples of this happening before, in any way. I'll keep searching

Re: excited to share info re: dyatlov pass incident
Luda's missing tongue has become a stumbling block to our research. I think many of us are close to the answer, we just can't prove it. Begin with the theory that 3 of the 4 members of the "den" team were hit from behind by an electric explosion, in the air slightly above them, and, very near the epicenter of the blast. The power of this blast blew three of them down 12' to the area in front of the den floor, crushing ribs et all. Two members had their eyes popped from the sockets, including Luda. Think about the relationship: eyes and mouth would be points of exit from the body if enormous pressure were built up within the body.

We have observed three of the potential four powers of a comet fragment attack: intense light; a heat burst; and electrical combustion explosions in the air. This is a forth: a vacuum. A vacuum could have pulled body parts threw points of exit to the outside world. Think eyes, and, think a tongue. Thoughts and research? Any proof, or ideas?

More thoughts on the missing tongue(s). That's right, tongues - plural.

Further extensive study of autopsy reports revealed two key facts. First, Zolotarev's mouth was wide open, just like Luda's, and the Russian words vaguely "suggest" Zolotarev's could also have been missing.

Secondly, the autopsy reports that Luda's "hyoid" bone had multiple fractures. The hyoid bone is a very special bone to humans. It is the U-shaped bone that is not a part of the human skeleton. It is a floating bone attached at one end to the tongue and at the other end to the skeleton by muscles and ligaments (like a hammock). Such connective muscles are called "hydrostal" muscles.

Thoughts. It is rare for a hyoid bone to be fractured. Quite rare. Most such fractures are caused by strangulation (murder cases) or martial arts hits. Such fractures have even more rarely occurred from "direct contusion from a fall." And those falls occur from a distance of at least 6' and are likened to "the force of an automobile accident." Recall those are the very words used by Boris the autopsy doctor.

Thus the huge blast (theoretically) that hurled Luda about 20' forward and perhaps 12' downward could have broken her hyoid bone. Rare, but very possible. Thus her tongue could have been freed and ultimately found by critters over the next three months prior to the discovery of her body.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??? I need to get a quote of this in Zolotarev's autopsy report. The possibility of two missing tongues?!

And now we have a bone beyond her tongue muscle being damaged as well.

Re: excited to share info re: dyatlov pass incident
Here we go! the possibility of a second missing tongue: "A strange detail: the autopsy act there is no mention about the Zolotaryov language. All reports have records on the state of perished language, but not here. Thus, it is noted that "the mouth is wide open" (as also in the case of Dubinina, as is seen in the morgue photo). Will also here there would be no language? And the research, frightened, and indications necessarily draw conclusions about the death by freezing, decided to leave to add inexplicable details?"

The only eyewitnesses to that night were spread around a 50 mile radius and they all saw 3 orange orbs in the area of hr Dyatlov party that night, BTW..it was the same exact night that Buddy Holly's plane crashed and the same night a retired air force colonel and his wife saw 3 orange orbs in Ohio traveling in a west to east direction. I've studied this for many many years.

OP here: Good Evening D.P.I. Enthusiasts!

As today is the 57th anniversary (depending on what timeline you adhere to) of the tragedy, I wanted to take a moment for all of us to reflect on how far we have come together. We have well over 20K views, countless thoughtful comments, and a very solid 5 star rating. Thanks so much GLP thinkers for making my little project turn in to such an adventure :)

I absolutely love this thread and all the different points of view expressed here.

Please continue to read new info and alert each other as we continue down this path together. I feel like we may be truly getting close!

Re: excited to share info re: dyatlov pass incident
I just came accross this poem online while looking for some poems by the students I remembered seeing:
It is not the secrets that we should fear
but rather, that which is known

The savage cold
the howling wind and blinding snow
the unforgiving heart of Mother Russia's Winter
this is what we endure
lest we shall never be called the best

Today we have drifted slightly off course
and must pitch our tent on this mountain's side
so as not to surrender valuable distance
in the tent we warm ourselves
with our bodies and small heater
we tell stories of our childhood, our families
and our sweethearts
these are the moments most cherished
moments that we take home with us
that remain forever

Just as the swirling winds are about to send us to dream
the flash of lights, the scream of some unholy machine
and the shadows of terror thrash about like demons from our worst nightmares
someone grabs the ax and begins to rip the tent
from the inside out and we run for our lives
barefoot and frightened beyond all comprehension
beyond all logic
we run as fast we can into bitter cold and biting wind

Four of us were ravaged while the others were separated
and they watched us until we froze
too panic stricken to move toward the tent where warmth awaited
perhaps the thought of an even more unbearable death
kept us there
where we were found

this is our story
known as Dyatlov Pass
named after our leader
and harboring nine souls
who never crossed
the mountain of the dead
February 2nd, 1959

It is not the secrets that we should fear
but rather, that which is known

Is it terrible that I want to critique the poem by saying they had no intention of assembling nor using the stove in the tent that night?

Edits. I've made some important technical edits to my detailed "Timeline of Death" post of 1-18-2016 (10:55 PM) that appeared on page 13 of this thread (be sure to go back and see it in white, not blue).

My remaining major timeline concern relates to the extreme efficiency of the tourists' actions. Though experiencing shock, chaos, confusion and fear, they had to scurry down the mountainside in about 29 minutes to be hit by the first recorded seismic wave at 8:13 AM near the cedar tree (when and where the two Yuri's die). Then they had to calmly decide to build a fire, locate and prepare a den and send three back toward the tent -- all within another 28 minutes, before the second recorded seismic wave hits. All the evidence indicates they were very much under control, even though two were dead and a third had a serious head injury. How do any of us handle the fear of near certain death?

I still feel we need to assume that the seismic data may not even register the impacts that did the damage. I think we need to keep in mind we may may either have either bad info or the info we want wasn't enough to even register as the ground shaking. I also keep thinking this timeline is too short.

I've decided it has to be easier to learn Russian than to read Google's translation of it.

The diagram of the tent and it's explanation almost killed me.

Don't go anywhere near the Russian articles unless you've read the Portuguese. The Portuguese is "See Spot run" compared to the Russian which is actually a test to see if you're psychic.

Re: excited to share info re: dyatlov pass incident
my father and i have recently become obsessed with the case. To begin with, far and away the best info is at [link to www.viafanzine.jor.br] ***you will need to translate the language** there are 4 pages, it's is huge!! This link is the final page all links to other pages are at the bottom. Take some time, digest, and reread. I want to throw something out there to begin with, that drastically changes the timeline. The diary entries on the first say they woke up in the afternoon (exhausted) and ate breakfast at two pm. They packed up and were on to the next leg of the journey by 2:30 pm. Very late start. They set up camp no later than 4:00 pm at the infamous dyatlov pass. Sun sets around 5:00 pm and it takes an hour to construct the tent. They have not put together the stove in the tent yet which takes over an hour to do. They ate within 8 hours of their death. They were not sleeping when "it" happened (stove not ready) the food in their stomachs was the breakfast from the other site. No evidence of cooking fire at dyatlov site. They hadn't had dinner yet. This incident began at around 5 pm to 6 pm. This changes everything. Sunset. The watches with gears had frozen due to the internal oil inside being submerged in snow which takes approximately 30 mins it 10:30 pm. The longest living ones never lived past 10 pm. The ENTIRE timeline is wrong.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42342339

My theory.

It is known that they dug a snow hole and covered it with the tent tarp? They did this on a mountain slope in a heavy blizzard?

My take is that they felt the snowpack beneath and behind them move. Avalanch suspected. They flew out to evacuate, obviously wrongly dressed for the conditions outside. Their first instincts were fire and shelter. They scrambled down to the trees (where conditions for walking were already documented as hard going) they furiously cut wood to create both fire and shelter, expending great amounts of calories in these conditions (they had not eaten dinner).

By this time they were suffering from exposure, exhaustion and became delirious. Important to remember that as a team, each member would be focused on a separate task to attempt completion of the whole task. This would mean that the severity of need would require such individual focus that, if one member was injured and fell, there would be no time to assist. The group-majorities survival is placed above the individual. This is teamwork in the moment of an emergency.

They could not go back to the tent in a blizzard as they'd have frozen to death. They also suspected it to be too dangerous to go back to a snow pack that they felt sure was unstable. Clothing would have been ripped in their frantic attempts to form fire and shelter in these arduous conditions (Tree branches might have snagged clothing). Objects would fall and be blown randomly. One by one, they became inured, slowed, fell and died.

OP here, I just wanted to clarify that the tarp over the den you have seen was not part of the tent. It was placed there during the investigation by the police to protect the evidence at the time. No part of the actual tent was taken off the tent itself.

I also have some key points to refute the avalanche theory which I will be reposting for you to take a look at. I'm interested in your response.

Re: excited to share info re: dyatlov pass incident
Avalanche was dicredited immediately (during the investigation) for the following reasons:

1. Obvious lack of disturbance of snow on mountain and at the tent.

2. Incline of mountain not steep enough for avalanche conditions to occur

3. Avalanches occur in daytime when sun can melt snow and cause it, whether it be night or early morning this won't hold water.

4. Along with sun, it's the wrong side of the mountain based on sun to be an avalanche

5. We know from tracks everyone was able to walk away from the tent without being carried, there for none of the major injuries occurred at the tent.

Perhaps I didn't make my point clear. I didn't say I think there was an avalanche. The bodies would have been snow covered and there would be little damage to clothing etc.

I think they suspected an avalanch. The Wind may have shifted the snow pack, made a noise or something that, in their clouded judgement, made them think an avalanche was happening. Once evacuated, they'd have no choice but to head for the trees. For two reasons: shelter perhaps the only visual references in whiteout conditions. Once there, exposed, events would have unfolded as I described.

Re: excited to share info re: dyatlov pass incident
Unfortunately, the investigators notes all ruled it out officially. I'm quite sure they didn't think it was an avalanche. In fact, Ivanov, the lead investigator made it clear he believed the russian government knew a lot more than they let on. He did an interview later apologizing to the families and pretty much saying he was forced to leave out the witness statement regarding the fireballs seen at the time and approximate location. Yuri Yudin always said he thought it was military testing gone wrong. (He even was allowed to keep evidence from the case being the only survivor) After finding out they closed the mountain to skiers within a day of it happenning (for no reason) and well before they were reported missing, just screams red flag to me.
