Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Pooka, its so good to see you and this thread again.

I have been prepping like crazy adding more garden space.

If I could recommend ONE survival plant to provide calories when times get tough, it would be the squash family. Pumpkins and some winter squash will keep for up to a year after harvest without refrigeration.

I need to learn how to post photos. My cucuzza squash (sseds from Westwind) is growing at an incredible pace. I planted along fence lines and the vines are covering the fences now.

The leaves are up to a foot across and shading out the weeds. The fruits two months after planting are around 2 feet long and up to 2 inches diameter.

Since its actually in the gourd family, the bugs and diseases that attack squash don't do anything to cucuzza.

BTW, the leaves are edible and can be cooked as well.

I planted 5 kinds of green beans. Found out later that the USDA recommends Blue Lake variety for my area, and, OH BOY, did the Blue Lake produce! A small patch provides about a pound of green beans per day. The other varieties are not producing much. Will replace them.

Advice to newbs: Find the USDA list for your county, buy those seeds, and get started. Concentrate on "low demand" stuff that does not require rich soil.

My soil is poor, but green beans, sunflowers, okra, pumpkins, melons, cucuzza, corn, etc. don't seem to care. However, they DO take a lot of area. E.g., my melon patches are 12 feet across and the vines are taking over the remaining lawn.

I also recommend rotating chickens through multiple garden areas. My richest soil was a chicken yard before. I planted my "high demand" veggies there and they are doing great.

I got 17 free 55 gal. chemical drums from my company. Don't worry; they had non-toxic stuff like hydrochloric acid before. Easy to wash out. I used a number of them for potatoes and sweet potatoes.

The Queen used store-bought taters in hers. Fungus killed them after initial growth.

I bought seed potatoes from Park Seed. Mine are pathogen-free and doing great.

So, plant a variety of stuff and something will survive.

Of all survival skills, I rate gardening near the top.
 Quoting: darth

You are so right gardening is definitely close to the top.
I’ve been gardening for quite a number of years but in earnest starting last year. Last year I started saving my own seeds and growing mostly heirloom varieties. So this year I planted “FREE” Basil, okra, butternut squash, parsley, cotton( Will see if the cotton grows I found it along the side of the road ) yard long beans, Pattypan squash, and Amish paste tomatoes. Takes 2 to 3 years to get your soil really fertile too so best to start right away. Best thing I’ve done for my garden is to have a goat because I put all the goats bedding and the pine shavings down the middle of the rows of the garden I let that mellow for two weeks and then rake it up against the plants. Soil becomes very fertile and full of worms.
The hardest part is mucking out the stall!

Good luck everybody I always liked this thread I couldn’t find it for longest time.

I keep it on hand and use on any lesion or insult to the skin. Great stuff. It ran away off the shelves during the possibility of ebola because it can continue preventing contamination of the skin for some time after use. I try not to rinse it off after use, but if applied somewhere while showering, that isn't very successful. :)
This was incorrect. My apologies. Please DO RINSE AWAY after use.
Cost is a great deal more here than in your area, however!!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Drs. Agatha and Calvin Thrash best book is Home Remedies: Hydrotherapy, massage, charcoal and other simple treatments. They go into detail about the effects of hot and cold water but what you need to remember is that hot water is initially soothing but becomes stimulating, cold water is initially stimulating but becomes soothing.

Back at the beginning of January I went to work feeling fine, by noon I could feel that I had a fever and went home. Instead of fighting the fever, I took a hot shower and covered up under lots of blankets. Spent 4 days there. Every time I became lucid I would drink lots of water. The symptoms were consistent with Covid19, I'm type A blood. I didn't know at that time that I might be dealing with the virulent virus but my office had 7 of 12 people come down with the same thing. I'm called patient zero there. I tell them that whatever doesn't kill them makes them stronger and that you are welcome.

I just looked up Home Remedies on Amazon and dang! Didn't realize it was such a hot commodity. If you run across it somewhere at a good price, pick it up. It's one of the few alternative medicine books that isn't asking you to buy some proprietary device/pill.
 Quoting: Lowkey Cyberpunk

What a treasure you have! A natural remedy book that actually uses natural remedies! Does it address anything that might specifically prevent covid-19 components? Challenge to lungs, maybe?

So happy you recovered from being very ill. "Every time I became lucid" is very frightening! Thank the Good Lord you had those times, which led you to rehydrating in a big way. Otherwise . . .

Laughing at you being Patient Zero, though it is not actually amusing. So dangerous, this stuff. What you did is obviously exactly the right thing. Glad your co-workers also recovered.

Thank you for sharing this. Each of us should commit your experience to memory, just in case.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
thanks to the corona thing i "learned" to plan food shoppijng and started caring more about how long stuffs good for.
switched from fresh bread to crackers and loads of other stuff.
now i could not leave the house for a month and still have nice food and snacks every day.
where i used to pretty much do groceries every day to get whatever i was feeling like at the time.

saves a lot of money too, plus time.

also im still only half way the toilet paper i bought in February.

i wonder how much Trinity has left still lol
 Quoting: T-Man

Well done on your new shopping method! Hope your new shopping method has you well on the way toward two years' food and water and other supplies. Good job on including snacks - those are important for mental health, as well as bumping nutritional content for the day.

Remember vitamins and every kind of soap, including laundry. Toothbrushes and toothpaste. Shampoo and other personal hygiene items - hygiene will be critical.

If you go to the beginning of this thread and read through, we have amazing suggestions, recommendations, all manner of post that could and no doubt will save lives after the balloon goes up.

I bought a couple packages of bathroom tissue when this current mess first kicked off, though so far haven't needed it. On the other hand, I still need to add to the supply just in case. All depends on how long a person is prepping for. I'd like a couple years' worth, just in case.

Good to hear from you!

Hibaclens is something good to keep in your first aid supplies. It's a antiseptic skin cleanser. My doctor told me to get it for something a while back.

I keep it in the shower. If I get a scrape or cut, I wash it with that and it heals much faster!

You can buy it at Walmart or on Amazon for $6.

Hibiclens is good stuff. 4% chlorhexidine solution. Disinfects skin for days.

You can buy chlorhexidine solution at farm/feed stores for a fraction of the cost of Hibiclens.
 Quoting: Crunch62

I keep forgetting chlorhexidine - thank you for the reminder - wish I'd checked Amazon for that before I ordered a larger Hibiclens with dispenser as part of a large order from part of the $1,200 we received.

[I want to switch to local stores only ASAP but right now that's more difficult with fewer open, so much exposure to anything people are coughing and breathing and passing around. Amazon is not my favorite by any means, but the convenience is undeniable. Also want to leave Walmart behind, despite the hit my budget will take. I just don't go out much at all these days, as I have multiple co-morbidities. Looks like that will continue for some months. Therefore Amazon has been a blessing in times of difficulty.]

Dark Wolf 007, have a look at Moringa leaf for diabetes. Of all things, I just saw a mention of that while watching a video the came back to the thread to continue answering posts, when suddenly I hit your post, right at the paragraph asking about something for diabetes.

Hope this is just what you need! I've found that Moringa seems easy to grow and there is even a dwarf variety! I purchased seeds for that size, but have not yet planted them. Will probably start them outside and bring in the house for winter.

Thank God I do not have diabetes, but I have enough other diagnoses to be pitiful. Turns out Moringa treats many diseases and difficulties, and is quite edible, so it apparently is something every one of us should be growing and using.

People, if you have used Moringa for any purpose, please tell us your experience.

People, if you are growing Maringa, please give us all the hints and advice you can!

I live South of Houston in Brazoria County. Warm, semi-tropical climate. The Queen brought some Moringa seeds from the Old Country.

I planted them down by our pond. They die every Winter when it freezes and some recover and grow from the roots.

I asked my wife, "Is Moringa really healthy?"

She replied, "Yes, my Grandfather put it in his pineapple wine and drank it every day."

I asked, "Well, was he healthy?"

She said, "He was 109, got drunk, and fell off his horse. That's what finally killed him".

Other family member confirm the story.

She cooks Moringa leaves with my eggs every morning. Don't think I will make it to 109, but you never know.
