Here's the "current numbers"

1355 confirmed

1983 suspect

38 recovered

41 dead

That makes the CFR 52%

And that's with the reported numbers.

Mortality rate staying at ~3%
 Quoting: NawtyBits

And it should be noted that deaths have outpaced recoveries.

Doctors warn China coronavirus carriers may show no symptoms of illness

CAT scan revealed signs of pneumonia on 10-year-old Shenzhen boy’s lungs even though he had no outward signs of infection

New research on the Wuhan coronavirus
has found the virus may be present in the lungs of individuals with no obvious symptoms,
making strict quarantine and contact-tracing regimes crucial to preventing the number of cases from reaching the scale of the 2003 Sars outbreak.

Do you have a link?

My daughter is in school there. I know there is a suspected case in RDU with one in isolation at Duke hospital.

I was sent this earlier this evening from my daughter. It was a statement from UNC Charlotte about the virus.

No link with seafood market in first case of China coronavirus, Chinese scientists revealed

[link to www.scmp.com (secure)]

The first person known to have been infected by the Wuhan coronavirus
had never visited the city’s seafood market – regarded as the epicentre of the outbreak
– according to Chinese researchers, who also called for extra precautions against airborne transmission of the disease between humans.

The researchers, seven of whom work at Wuhan’s Jinyintan hospital, designated for patients with the illness, revealed on Friday in The Lancet medical journal that symptoms of the new disease were first reported on December 1 – much earlier than the Wuhan government’s initial announcement on December 31 of 27 cases of the pneumonia-like infection.
According to the report, the first patient had no exposure to the Huanan seafood market which was shut down on January 1
over fears – later confirmed
– that the new virus was linked to its trade in wild animals. The researchers added that none of the patient’s family had developed fever or any respiratory symptoms. There was also no epidemiological link between the first patient and the later cases, they found.

We performed stochastic simulations of early outbreak trajectories that are consistent with the epidemiological findings to date. We found the basic reproduction number, R_0, to be around 2.2 (90% high density interval 1.4--3.8), indicating the potential for sustained human-to-human transmission. Transmission characteristics appear to be of a similar magnitude to severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the 1918 pandemic influenza.

So, they have banned all public transportation in XX cities and regions. Now they are starting to ban private conveyances, allowing only government sponsored vehicles to move. (FYI, I saw a stat that said 220,000 POVs left Wuhan just before the travel ban took place.)

This situation in several cities is already dire, but I'll use Wuhan for discussion purposes since this is ground Zero. Wuhan is approximately 600 sq miles. There are 26 power generating facilities in Hubei province ( [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] 15 of those are non-renewable, coal, gas, fuel oil. Those facilities need people to run. Deliveries of fuels, people to unload fuel, people to run the power plants, etc. At what point do people stop going to work? Or start dropping dead at work? Or people can't get to work? They can send in the military, but the military will be busy enforcing quarantines. We are mere steps away from martial law, if we aren't there already.

Non-government sponsored info is being clamped down on. I suspect that soon the internet there will be severely restricted. But, I believe, if things are as bad as I think they are, that we will start hearing rumors of power outages and local electricity blackouts, first, and probably total electrical blackouts eventually. You want to see panic? Turn out the lights for a day or 2.

We are on a slippery slope, and it's going to be difficult to put on the brakes.

Someone convince me I'm out of line here, that I'm wrong.

Minnesota gears up virus precautions as two suspected cases are reported

[snip]

The Minnesota Department of Health issued an alert to doctors and other health care providers this week asking them to notify authorities about any patients with respiratory symptoms or fevers who recently traveled in Wuhan, China. Callbacks from Minnesota doctors resulted in state officials sending two lab samples from suspect patients for testing at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The two suspected Minnesota cases involve travelers who had visited Wuhan recently. Both have received medical attention but did not need to be hospitalized. They are isolated at home while state health officials await test results from the CDC and reach out to people with whom they have been in contact, said Kris Ehresmann, infectious disease program director for the state health department.

“We’ve identified their contacts, and so we’re beginning to follow up with those individuals to see if they have symptoms of illness and to limit their activities” as needed, she said.

At the University of Minnesota, spring semester began Tuesday, with more than 2,200 Chinese international students recently returned from China. While the U said it will work closely with the state health department to monitor any developments, it stressed that there are no confirmed coronavirus cases on any of its campuses, according to a public health alert.

Boynton Health, the U’s Minneapolis clinic, will ask patients with fever or respiratory symptoms about overseas travel.

QUOTE:
Overview

Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province,is the most populous city in central China. In 2015 it has a population of 10.60 million residing in three distinct districts (Hankou, Hanyang, and Wuchang), commonly known as “The Three Towns of Wuhan”. The city is recognized as the political, economic, financial, cultural, educational, and transportation centre of central China.

While Wuhan has for decades been a traditional base for manufacturing, it has also become one of the areas promoting modern industrial change. Wuhan consists of three national development zones, four scientific and technologic development parks, over 350 research institutes, 1,656 hi-tech enterprises, numerous enterprise incubators and investments from 230 Fortune Global 500 firms – enabling the city to offer globally competitive strengths in most business fields. By combining traditional industries such as automobile manufacturing, the starting point of China's economic liberalization, with new hi-tech industries in places like the Optics Valley, Wuhan is positioning itself as one of the most progressive business cities in all of Asia.

Special industrial zones

1. Wuhan Optics Valley Area

With National Development Zone: Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone

Probably more than one factory in the area and already they are running out of gear. Average time for production of orders is 2 weeks or 4 weeks during peak time. Looking at the pic of that factory and how they literally have it in their backyard and still can't keep up...thinking of all the people and how they will get to work or make the people work (even in Commie China)...well, it was a bit frightening in my head once the cascade of thoughts hit like it seems to have for you this morning.

I wish I could be a cheerleader atm and say that this isn't a dire situation, but it would be a lie, so I won't do it. What I will say is thank you very much for creating this thread and helping disseminate info for us on GLP as we get a handle on the situation. I am glad to see so many threads with people thinking out loud, so to speak, trying to figure out what is really going on and giving each other helpful tips on survival in case the GLP effect doesn't save us this time.

So if you take a look at that first link and see what I see (I don't like putting thoughts in ppl's head- only showing info for them to decide themselves), forgive me if it causes any undue fear. Thank you for the thread and as accurate info as you can find. I will try not to clog up your thread with ramblings.

This could hit where I live faster than I imagined. I can see it moving from Minneapolis to Rochester and then to the La Crosse area soon.

Rochester is the home of Mayo Clinic.

The "news" here is complete bullshit, they get their marching orders and content from the mass media conglomerate.
So who will know around here that the virus IS actually here?

No one will tell us where I live, the virus is not even on the website of our local news.

I guess I'll know it's here when people start dropping like flies around me.

I'm up near Duluth. It could be here much sooner than later. It wouldn't surprise me if it's here already. I'm done going out to socialize for a while. Self-imposed social distancing. Today, I'm filling a couple spare propane tanks, and looking through my "things" to see if I'm lacking.

Good luck.

(less than 50% snip)

"All three men arrived on flights from China – one on January 6, one on January 19 and the other date is being checked by authorities.

“I’d like to thank each of these three people because they have been exemplary in the way that they presented themselves (to health services),” Mr Hazzard told reporters tonight.

He labelled it a “tricky” and “evolving” virus and said the six other cases are under investigation."

What is this tricky and evolving thing? A British tabloid said that people are coughing up blood, which would be reasonable. Too bad it's a tabloid, don't trust it.

Let's try and see what the evolving thing is.

Honestly I'm begining to think that it is an escape from the bsl lab there. Created to see how things mutate and they destabilized it and released it.
I'm more wondering if it was on purpose or an accident at this point.
 Quoting: Feistylorax

My gut tells me it was from a lab.

Would the Chinese do this intentionally?

It is not without precedent for communists to kill their own if they thought it "good for the state". Releasing a virus is better than firing squads, and they can have plausable deniability of intent and purpose. Problem is -- they cannot control the "demon".

Guess we will find out at some point.
 Quoting: Lady Jayne Smith

I don't really want to get into speculation on the causes, it's not really important how, at this point, to us little people. However, let's just explore your thought for a moment, because something has been bothering me. It would not surprise me if this is a released bio weapon. However, if someone was going to intentionally release it on their own population to reduce their numbers, one would think they ChiComms would have positioned themselves a little better to deal with the consequences. And, they would have to know that intentionally releasing something that WILL travel to other countries is going to create a LOT of publicity and scrutiny. Look at H5N1, SARS, MERS, etc. It appears H5N1 was an accidental Chin lab release, but hardly broke the news here, as it didn't effect us. The HK Health department intentionally hid cases of SARS from WHO inspectors for months, going as far as creating special ambulances to move the sick from hospital to hospital just before the inspectors reached the 1st hospital.

I just don't see that the Chinese would risk losing the appearance of control, or Chinese cohesiveness. And for President Xi to publically say the situation is "critical" is quite tell.

But, all this leads to something that has been nibbling at my brain. Because of this loss of control, loss of cohesion, loss of Face, and possibly the loss of hundreds/thousands/dare I say millions? of people, will they, at some point feel helpless and lash out at the rest of the world? Their imperial destiny dashed, might they decide they have nothing to lose and do something desperate?

When I start seeing Chinese officials starting to imply that they were attacked by a bio-weapon, I will assume they have decided to go out with a bang.

We are nowhere near to that point, but it is something I've been contemplating.

Ugh. I have errands to run.

There is no damb vaccine. It will take at LEAST 6 months and that has the odds of winning the lottery.

If there IS a vaccine they had well before this outbreak.

Something interesting(to me, anyway)

Boxun (an aggregation website, which focuses on alleged political scandals in China) has been covering the outbreak for the last few days, posting news critical of the Chinese gov't, and some good info I haven't seen elsewhere.

Today's articles are now about:

air pollution and miscarriage
tips for losing that extra holiday weight
eating lilies for fall and winter dry throat and overall health
