I don't want to sound insensitive, because I truly have empathy for you. It really sounds horrifying to be scared to freeze to death with no way out but why didn't you prepare for this? Even if it were short term preps since Nov?

I don't expect others to be prepared like this but we have amassed 6ft freezer packed to the max with frozen meats, a 40kw diesel generator, a 1000gal fuel tank that I've finally filled, were working on a woodstove for next year... those are just the items to deal with a crisis like this.

No preps? Even a shitty generator from Harbor Freight could be running electric space heaters or backfed through a 120v outlet to run your furnace. You could backfeed with a couple cut cords from old devices extension cords and twisted together. A few 5gal cans of gas could last all week if you used it sparingly; maybe longer.

Time to re-examine the self sufficiently plan my man.

Know better, do better.

Get through this then get back to the drawing board and start filling gaps.

americans are so funny lmao ... you need prepping because you have 0 surivival instinct .. I have went through the winter - 28 C and enjoyed it .. as well as opened window for some fresh air :D and yes no electrical heaters just fire place .

Not everyone has a fireplace. I have a four bedroom, two story house. I love my house. No fireplace. I'm in the northeast and never needed one. The longest I've ever done without electricity was 12 hours, and that was during Hurricane Sandy that occurred on October 29th, which isn't cold here. I do own a portable emergency radio and battery operated lanterns.

A bus driver once told me you can pay for one ride stay on the bus and ride all day in a nice warm bus.

City transit could be offline though.

Build a nice big bonefire. Invite the niebours over for a sing song and warm those little tootsies by the fire!

Imagine how the homeless have always feel.

Tape plastic sheeting or bags over your windows, most heat escapes that way.

Candles will even help warm up a small room if you light half a dozen.

There have been lots of suggestions here. I hope OP is OK. Some people just give up when the going gets tough. Sad!

Sit in your car running but dont forget to leave the window open a small crack in case of carbon monoxide poisoning. Dont do this in the garage for the same reason.
