The first part of this verse refers to the coming of the millennial kingdom of Christ.

He (the devil) is tossed out of heaven once and for all time. The Great Tribulation will be Satan's final attempt to prevent the return and the reign of Christ. He knows he has only a short time to try to prevent the establishment of Christ's kingdom so his wrath intensifies in his persecution of Israel, God's chosen nation, and Christians.

The Woman Clothed With The Sun Is Symbolic
On the other hand, if we understand the woman clothed with the sun to be symbolic of Israel, then we have the nation of Israel fleeing into the desert for 1,260 days to get away from the devil at the end of this age. This would also fit the symbolic interpretation of a crown with twelve stars on her head:

Then he [Joseph] had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? The twelve stars are the twelve tribes of Israel. See also Gen 49:1-28.

Most experts agree that the time the woman (Israel) spends in the wilderness is the 3 1/2 years during the great tribulation.

Daniel 7, 12 and Revelation 13 establishes this period as end times.

The great tribulation takes place in end times.

7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?

9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.

13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

This verse gives us an idea of when the people of Israel will fly into the wilderness:

Mathew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Mathew 24 continues:

17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

The great tribulation is one of the few times that God tells us exactly what will happen and how long it will last.

He is essentially finished with the human race. Maybe some will be saved but it's all over. He is going to end the world as we know it.

It will take 3 1/2 years for him to do it.
