Report today that false negatives are happening. That is why they keep mentioning symptoms- testing not 100%.

Key Diagnostic Test Might Be Missing Many Coronavirus Cases

China’s ability to control a rapidly spreading coronavirus epidemic is under further strain amid fears that a key test used to confirm new cases is failing to catch large numbers of people with the disease.

Problems with so-called nucleic acid tests (NATs) widely used to identify the presence of the previously unknown pneumonia-causing virus make it likely that many infections are going uncounted even as the number of confirmed cases continues to spiral.

[snip]

But there is growing concern that those NATs are producing large numbers of false negatives. In a Wednesday interview with state broadcaster CCTV, Wang Chen, an expert in critical diseases and director of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, said one characteristic of the virus was that “not all of those infected by it return positive NATs.”

Even patients who definitely have the disease only come back positive 30% to 50% of the time,” Wang said. “Testing throat swabs (from potentially infected people) also returns a lot of false negatives.”

Tests like NATs are especially important in people that may have contracted the virus but have not yet shown symptoms. Emerging trends in local infections mean that many such patients may have been sent home by hospitals after their NATs came back negative, doctors told Caixin

This sounds to me like they are trying to get out ahead of some damage control on this for when they can't hide the numbers anymore and have to explain why they weren't truthful with their daily updates and reporting!!

Elderly Brooklyn woman checks into hospital with coronavirus symptoms

A 70-year old woman from Brooklyn, New York, recently checked herself into a local emergency room complaining of symptoms similar to that of the coronavirus, according to Breaking News Network (BNN).

To be honest without more context- that’s a really random article.
My husband has a sore throat after having a layover 9 days ago in O’hare. He’s more likely to have it than a 70 year old on Brooklyn without more information. Did she travel? Have contact with someone who did? What symptoms is she having?

Unfortunately that was the only paragraph in the article about her. The rest was other cov stuff.

in our little home town there have been many people confirmed with both a&b flu also seems way more people are infected than years past so I went to look at statistics for past and found this...
"Influenza A viruses visible generally during the wake of spring and winter. However, influenza B can be visible at any time of the year. As such, it is possible to have both at the same time though its rare and perplexing"

Virus symptoms 'can take nearly a month to show'

Reports in China suggest the virus' incubation period might actually be 24 days - 10 days longer than previously thought.

Research by leading expert Zhong Nanshan in China suggests symptoms show on average after three days, but can take as long as 24 days.

[link to translate.google.com (secure)]

Incubation period up to 24 days

The research paper was titled "Clinical Features of New Type Coronavirus Infection in China in 2019". Corresponding authors were Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study extracted data from 1099 laboratory-confirmed 2019-nCoV ARD (2019 new coronavirus-induced acute respiratory diseases) patients from 552 hospitals in 31 provinces / cities. The data are as of January 29, 2020.

The study showed that the median age of 1099 cases included in the study was 47 years, and women accounted for 41.9%. Patients covered the entire age group, 0.9% of patients were under 15 years old. 2.09% were medical staff.

Studies have shown that the median incubation period for neocoronavirus infection is 3 days (range 0 to 24 days), which is shorter than the recent report on 425 patients (5.2 days). The discovery provided evidence through a larger sample size that could guide quarantine of close contacts.

[link to translate.google.com (secure)]

Zhong Nanshan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, published his first research paper on the new coronavirus on the professional academic website Medrxiv on February 9. With the largest sample size of more than a thousand patients (1099) to date, Zhong Nanshan's team reached several key conclusions that refreshed people's understanding of the new coronavirus.

[snip]

However, from the 1099 patients diagnosed in many places, the incubation period can be as long as 24 days and as short as 0 days.

From the HK Director of the Food and Health Bureau

Chen Zhaoshi pointed out that the next two weeks is a critical time to fight the epidemic, the public should further reduce social activities, strongly advised theatres, karaoke, cram schools, interest groups, clubs and other places gathered to suspend business, to minimize the risk of transmission of viruses.

My comment: Social distancing.

From the blog:

Although we are likely weeks (perhaps even months) behind Hong Kong, Singapore, and Macao in having to deal with the the novel coronavirus, it isn't too soon to be thinking about the things you will either want or need, if you and your family find yourself sitting at home and avoiding crowds.

Now - when store shelves are full and prices are low - is the time to stock up on items you will need for a pandemic. . . or any other disaster.

And this isn't just me saying it. This is the standing advice from Ready.gov.

Comment: I agree we are weeks behind HK; there is time to get ready. Do not wait until the last minute. Please.

I've said a few times before, that HK is the place I'm watching. They might give us an indication of how the rest of the 1st world countries may go. Although they are only recommending Social Distancing, how long until it's ordered? HKers are being walked in to shutting things down. This step tells me that they are scared enough of this virus to begin steps that will harm the economy, and that business is a lower priority than public health. That's very telling.

The million dollar question: are they too late?

But, even 1 person going about his/her daily life thinking that they are cleared because they passed the 14 days is a problem.

I wonder if they are going to go back and contact those previous close contacts they already cleared.

Great research articles, OP!

I think the person above was questioning the length of time one with exposure to nCov would be shedding the virus (infectivity time) not how long for symptoms.

Now I have seen things that indicate that after recovery a person still sheds the virus, but no statements about the length of time after recovery that shedding continues.

All I have seen is that the average time to begin shedding is about 5 days.

And to answer the query about "not peer reviewed" it means it hasn't been checked and double checked by others in the field and given the stamp of approval. It can't be because there just isn't the time or the actual knowledge base as from all info available, the virus is still quickly mutating, so no way to nail it all down yet.

However, from the 1099 patients diagnosed in many places, the incubation period can be as long as 24 days and as short as 0 days.

Stating the obvious I know, but this means present 14 days is allowing people back into society infected. What % do you think?
 Quoting: anonymous 78318082

I have no idea.

But, even 1 person going about his/her daily life thinking that they are cleared because they passed the 14 days is a problem.

I wonder if they are going to go back and contact those previous close contacts they already cleared.

Ungood.

 Quoting: Fluffy Pancakes

Thanks.

The not peer reviewed comment was in the text of the study, I just copied it over so people knew that the study hasn't been vetted by the science community yet. I should have take it out. :-)

As for viral shedding, that would begin as soon as the virus has created a large enough viral load. When symptoms begin, you can shed, for sure. Symptoms begin in as little as one day, so some will shed almost immediately. For those that don't develop symptoms for a week or two (or 3) shedding would depend on how active the virus is in the host. 5 days is reasonable, although I haven't seen that officially, but it stands to reason the host would need to few days to have enough viruses to shed. Does that make sense? My words seem to ramble there. Sorry. cool2

A cleaning worker who had worked on 20 bullet trains, was confirmed infected with the novel #coronavirus pneumonia. Authorities released her travel routes and warned potential contacts to stay home for medical observation.

I think that people going back to work in parts of China today is a big mistake. They've just kicked the can a week or 2 down the road. They don't have a handle on it, and now the ones who stayed home unexposed are back on the streets, doing street things.
