Trump expects coronavirus crisis to ‘go away’ in April

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump said Monday he expected the coronavirus outbreak that has killed more than 900 people to disappear in April due to hotter weather.

“The virus… typically that will go away in April,” he told reporters at the White House, adding: “The heat, generally speaking, kills this kind of virus.”

[snip]

But Trump’s prognosis is at odds with top US health officials, who have cautioned against commenting on the trajectory of the epidemic.

“The issue is, we don’t know,” Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told reporters Friday.

“And any kind of prediction would be ill-advised because we really have so many unknowns,” he added.

[snip]

A January 31 paper in the British medical journal, The Lancet, warned that, even if the epidemic begins to recede at its epicenter in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in April, it could still grow globally into the second half of the year.

Crew Members Plea For Rescue As Coronavirus Outbreak On Cruise Ship Grows To 135 Cases

The number of infected passengers aboard a quarantined cruise ship in Tokyo nearly doubled on Monday with 135 confirmed cases—making it the largest concentration of the coronavirus outside mainland China—as some passengers and crew members grew frustrated and asked their governments to be rescued.

*Of the 3,700 passengers and crew members on board, 135 have tested positive for coronavirus, Princess Cruises said Monday, including 24 Americans.

*The ship has been on lockdown in Tokyo since February 5 after a former passenger tested positive for the virus after he disembarked from an earlier trip.

*439 people have been tested so far

I bought extras of everything today. I'm good for three or four weeks in my own, definitely. But I got way more extra if my daughter has to come home. They roll their eyes at me now. If nothing comes of it, I'll donate extra to a food pantry. Since coming home and reading the 24 day period, I'll go stock up more Friday.

On a side note, what I witnessed in the stores today was not many people, heard little to no coughing or sneezing, and full shelves. Of course it's a weekday when most are at work.

Comfort foods like Spaghetti, Macaroni and Cheese, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are pretty easy to stock pile. The bread is the only part that doesn't have a long shelf life and with a little practice one can make bread quite easily.
Canned Tuna and Canned Chicken work well too.

The long term storage foods we picked up extra of was Dried bananas, and Dried Pineapple. The kids love those and will eat them regardless of the situation.

It's pretty easy and can be done moderately quickly.

About the bread thing. I have 3 layers of bread coverage. I have frozen several loaves of store bought bread, which, when thawed, will need to be toasted or grilled for a good consistency. Second layer is Rhodes frozen bread dough. This will last for months in the freezer, and is a breeze to bake when you need it. Lastly, is the good, old fashioned way, homemade.

It's a start. Don't forget soups. Homemade chix soup freezes extremely well. Hard cheeses freeze fairly well. Frozen potatoes.

One tip on milk...I don't drink much but use it on cereal and for baking/cooking. Powered milk is my plan C, but Plan B is Parmalat boxed milk. I find it in Whole and 2%. It's in the baking section of walmart. It a boxed qt of milk that's been hyperpasturized and has a long shelf life. I just bought some dated the end of 2020. And I've opened some in the past well beyond the expire date and they were good still. And this stuff tastes like normal milk, because it is.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

And if you decide to get some Parmalat, it's about $1.50 a qt at walmart, and about $4 a qt if you order online. So shop around
 Quoting: NawtyBits

We've the powdered. If this goes long term and we have to there are Goats and cows nearby and we will just walk up the road. I'm going to be adding Rennet to my stocks here too.
We don't have a lot of bread stocked up, because I have a decent skill level on making it now, and hundreds of pounds of Wheat berries for long term, and a lot of just flour regardless.

Also- shredded cheese can be frozen. Pepperonis don’t need refrigeration until opened. Same with salami/ summer sausage. Eggs can be frozen if you whisk them first (then freeze in freezer bag) Milk can be frozen. I have a few extra half gallons in my freezer right now. Yeast keeps longer if stored in the refrigerator.

Instant mashed potatoes and pancake mix (the just add water kind) are relatively cheap and last for quite awhile. We eat a ton of pancakes here. Usually from scratch but I know we will eat the box ones eventually if nothing happens.

Tsing Yi residents evacuated as Hong Kong health authorities confirm two coronavirus cases from same block

[link to www.scmp.com (secure)]

Hong Kong is about to blow.
 Quoting: Woodenboat

The precautionary move was sparked by the case of a 62-year-old woman in Room 307 on the third floor of Hong Mei House at Cheung Hong Estate. She was Hong Kong’s 42nd and latest case as of 1.30am on Tuesday.

She was found to have lived directly below a man in Room 1307 on the 13th floor, who was confirmed earlier to be Hong Kong’s 12th case.

[snip]

Yuen said a vent pipe, which connected to a discharge pipe in a bathroom was not properly sealed and could have carried the virus – present in faeces – into bathrooms by extraction fans.

“When a person turns on the exhaust fan inside the toilet, the air inside the drainage system can enter the toilet via the ventilation pipe,” he said.

As a precaution, Yuen said all flats numbered 7 on every floor had to be vacated so their piping could be inspected.

“We have reasons to worry that airborne transmission is a possibility,” Yuen said, adding that authorities were not ruling out other routes, such as contact.

Residents whose flat had the same piping issue would be quarantined for 14 days, even if they showed no symptoms, he added.
 Quoting: NawtyBits

WOW,i have many questions for this lady. did she leave her apt, like pick up mail? DID ANYONE ENTER THAT WENT THRU THE HALLWAYS AND BROUGHT THE VIRUS IS? if it really did go thru the plumbing, that is very bad news.

Hong Kong Building Evacuated After Two Coronavirus Cases Confirmed: Officials

February 10, 2020 Updated: February 10, 2020
Officials in Hong Kong have evacuated a high-rise residential building where two residents contracted coronavirus on separate floors.

Dr. Wong Ka-Hing, the head of the territory’s Center for Health Protection, said at a press conference on Tuesday local time that the government is investigating the suspected environmental transmission of the new virus related to two cases in the building, Reuters reported.

Health officials said the evacuation was implemented after a 62-year-old woman in Room 7 on the third floor of Hong Mei House at Cheung Hong Estate became infected, becoming the 42nd case in Hong Kong, according to the South China Morning Post.

A man who lived several floors above her on the 13th floor of the building was also confirmed to have been infected with the virus days earlier, officials said. They said their apartments share the same drainage system added that the system is being investigated as a possible method of transmitting the virus

Governor Cuomo Updates New Yorkers on Novel Coronavirus

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced additional negative results for the novel coronavirus in New York State. The New York State Department of Health just learned of another negative test result, which brings the statewide total of samples that have come back negative up to 22. As of today, samples from 23 New Yorkers have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing. Of those, 22 have come back negative. One sample from New York City is still pending; there are no pending samples in New York State outside of New York City. There are still no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in New York State.

Coronavirus outbreak: Santa Clara County declares local health emergency

ANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) — County officials are extending their declaration of a local health emergency in Santa Clara County Monday due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Officials stressed that this does not mean there is an increased risk to the public.

The declaration helps ensure that the county is prepared to respond effectively to the outbreak and allows them to receive mutual aid resources from the state of California and other jurisdictions.

A local health emergency was first declared on Feb. 3 in Santa Clara County.

On Monday, the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors was asked to ratify and extend the declaration for 30 days.

Coronavirus patients may be mildly ill for more than a week before condition becomes severe

Several of the locally infected patients with no known links had seen a doctor two or three times before they were sent to hospital.

This is because the illness generally starts mild with non-specific symptoms such as cough, sore throat, slight fever and feeling tired, said Professor Leo Yee Sin, executive director of the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

She said they may be mildly sick for more than a week before the virus affects their lungs.

In Singapore, several patients have needed either high dependency because their conditions are unstable, or even intensive care as they require intubation to ensure they get sufficient oxygen.

As of Sunday (Feb 9) night, six patients are in intensive care. These are patients of different ages, and not just the older ones, she said.

The first six patients who recovered all had mild symptoms.

Patients in intensive care whose lungs are no longer working well get mechanical aid in their breathing.

Chinese media confirms that asymptomatic cases of coronavirus are now excluded from the government's official count. This contradicts WHO guidelines. It's unknown how many asymptomatic cases there are.

WHO on China changing its definition for a confirmed case: "We're not aware of that change. We'll check it out obviously, but we're not aware of any significant change to the case definition, certainly not one that discounts lab-confirmed cases .. It sounds strange."

The 1st group of Americans evacuated because of coronavirus to be released Tuesday

No one in the first group of Americans evacuated on a flight from Wuhan, China, has tested positive for coronavirus, health officials said a day before their quarantine expires.
The evacuees will be free to leave March Air Reserve Base near Riverside, California, Tuesday if they aren't showing any symptoms, Riverside County Public Health Department said in a release.
The group of 195 people have been quarantined at the base since they arrived from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, on January 29.
"To date, no one has tested positive for novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) among the 195 in quarantine," the health department said.
