"Leading Harvard doctor says coronavirus is NOT as deadly as feared because only a small number of contained cruise ship passengers have died and only 0.001% of China's average 25,000 deaths a day are from the virus"

-Dr Jeremy Samuel Faust said people should not be anxious about the outbreak and stop hoarding food and masks

-He claimed that the coronavirus death rate is less than 1 percent - far lower than the World Health Organization’s alarming figures of 3.4 percent

-The doctor slammed the ‘frightening numbers’ which overstate the risk

-Faust said that looking at the doomed Diamond Princess cruise ship gives a better indication of how fatal the disease is than global statistics

-Around 705 passengers out of the 3,711 on board the boat caught coronavirus

-Only six people from the boat have died, giving a death rate of 0.85 percent, and all deaths are in people over 70

-He casts doubt on China's death toll, saying many happened in areas where the death rate is already higher than the norm and respiratory issues are rife

--He also pointed out that 25,000 people die in China every day, while just 25 coronavirus deaths were reported per day at the height of the outbreak

-Instead of stockpiling food, Faust said the public should be helping the elderly and infirm who are most at risk
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69236336

The diamond princess has a .85 infection rate while under quarrentine conditions, not on a subway train. Big difference.

Claims are no all over the place.

Nobody knows for sure.

In the face of uncertainty and possible catastrophic consequences for individuals who catch it - "better safe than sorry".

And "stocking food" and also helping the elderly/infirm are not mutually exclusive.

COVID-19: Fears of coronavirus RELAPSES after man, 36, dies from disease in China five days after being given all clear

A 36-YEAR-OLD man has died from coronavirus five days after being given the all clear by doctors in China.

According to the South China Morning Post, Li Liang was admitted to hospital on February 12 before being released two weeks later.

But two days later he began suffering symptoms again and was sent back to the health centre on March 2 and died the same day from respiratory failure.

So, 5 days after the all-clear, this probably can't be a case of another infection, as it takes ~8 days to get from symptoms start to ARDS.

Nobody knows for sure. But, they have a pretty good idea. Even with wonky data, numbers can be extrapolated.

Even small subset studies can help us paint a better picture. And I have yet to see a recent study that puts R0 under 3.5 or mortality under 3%

Someone please prove me wrong.

N.J. coronavirus update: Fort Lee man, 32, is first to test positive for virus in state.
Updated 9:33 AM; Today 7:31 AM

A 32-year-old man from Fort Lee in Bergen County is the first person in New Jersey to be diagnosed with coronavirus, the borough’s mayor told NJ Advance Media on Thursday.

The unidentified man was being treated for the illness at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he arrived on Tuesday and was placed in isolation, according to Mayor Mark Sokolich.

[snip]

Sokolich said the man is in stable condition and that officials were hoping to interview him Thursday morning at the hospital to find out where he was before apparently contracting the virus.

The mayor said the man “has no school-age children” but he did not know his occupation.

[snip]

A patient at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck is also under observation and suspected of having coronavirus, hospital officials told NJ Advance Media on Thursday.

“A person is under investigation (at the hospital) for coronavirus,” said Jessica Griffin, a spokeswoman for Holy Name.

"...hoping to interview him..." Is he unconscious? The article says he's "resting comfortably and doing well"

Here's who's pulled out of SXSW so far

Austin officials plan to move forward with South by Southwest, the annual tech, film and music conference, even after a number of high-profile attendees dropped out over coronavirus concerns.

The conference, which is scheduled to take place from March 13 to March 22, has come under public pressure in recent days to cancel the event.

Here are some of the big names dropping out of the event:

Twitter
Facebook
Intel
Vevo
Mashable
TikTok

Despite the cancellations, SXSW organizers announced new keynote speakers this week, including Hillary Clinton and Andrew Yang.

Lufthansa cancels 7,100 flights this month

Lufthansa has canceled 7,100 European flights for March because of the spread of coronavirus and the impact it's having on demand for flights.

The German airline says most of these canceled flights will be internal German flights and trips to Italy, accounting for around 25% of its total capacity. Lufthansa is also canceling all flights to Israel because of new entry regulations. It says the rules will lead to a considerable drop in demand for flights to Tel Aviv and Eilat.

India shuts schools for two million children in New Delhi.

All primary schools in the Indian capital, New Delhi, were ordered closed on Thursday, affecting more than two million children as the authorities sought to prevent the small number of cases in the country from turning into a major outbreak.

In a tweet, Delhi’s deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia, said the action was being taken “as a precautionary measure.”

Under the order, all public and private schools through the fifth grade will be closed from Friday until March 31. The sprawling city has more than 2,700 primary and pre-primary schools, according to recent government data.

Australian paper prints blank pages to help tackle toilet paper shortage

An Australian newspaper has printed an extra eight pages to be used as toilet paper after coronavirus fears prompted customers to bulk buy supplies, leaving some supermarket shelves bare.
In a bid to tackle the shortage, The NT News provided a practical -- if unconventional -- solution.
Australians living in the Northern Territories would have noticed on Thursday that eight pages in the paper had been left bare, except for watermarks and a cut-out guide edition.
"Run out of loo paper? The NT News cares," the newspaper read.

"That's why we've printed an eight-page special liftout inside, complete with handy cut lines, for you to use in an emergency."

Brilliant. It's this kind of outside-the-box thinking we will need.s226

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency over the novel coronavirus after a California man died after falling ill with the virus while on a cruise ship.

Officials are trying to locate hundreds of other Californians who disembarked from the Grand Princess ship in San Francisco last month after a trip to Mexico. Officials want to determine whether they also might have contracted the virus.
