Part of my mother's family is from Newry, Mattie. I hope you are safe and the Troubles don't come again. But I think recent world events have given every "liberation" struggle out there the idea that this is a great time to exploit everyone's busyness elsewhere.

Be safe!

GOP fears insult-rich debates are becoming deeply damaging to the party's image

The problem, some GOP insiders say, has its roots in the early part of the primary process. When Trump announced his candidacy in June last year, he was widely ridiculed by rivals and pundits alike.

Even as he led polls in the months before the primaries began, his biggest rivals such as Cruz and Rubio largely avoided attacking him, presumably calculating that he would implode.

Now that the opposite has occurred — Trump has won 10 contests to four for Cruz and one for Rubio — his opponents realize time is fast running out to stop him. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

“The voting window is closing and now they are throwing the kitchen sink out there — and that gets extremely messy,” said another Republican strategist, Ford O’Connell. “This is a complete result of these guys ignoring Trump. They failed Political Communications 101 — they allowed Trump to define himself before they defined him.”

[link to thehill.com]

And THAT is the whole reason they want him out. THEY failed.

Re: The World at War
US sending nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to ISIS fight

"The United States is sending nuclear-capable B-52 aircraft to drop bombs on the Islamic State terror group, defense officials confirmed to Fox News Friday.

The B-52 Stratofortress will start its first bombing campaign against ISIS in April, the Air Force Times reports. It's not clear how many B-52s or airmen will be involved.

Officials say the aircraft will replace nuclear-capable B-1 Lancers hitting ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria.

The Lancers returned to home bases in the U.S. in January. They flew only 3% of all strike missions against ISIS, but had dropped 40% of the bombs and other munitions. B-1s could loiter over the battlefield for 10 hours, much longer than jet fighters, and also could fly supersonic, reaching targets across Iraq and Syria within minutes."

Cruz: Brokered convention would lead to voter 'revolt'

Ted Cruz poured cold water on the calls to stop GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump during a brokered convention, warning that there could be hell to pay with the grass roots if they believe their will is being disregarded.
"Any time you hear someone talking about a brokered convention, it is the Washington establishment in a fevered frenzy, they are really frustrated because all their chosen candidates, their golden children, the voters keep rejecting," Cruz said Friday at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

"So they seize on this plan of a brokered convention, and the D.C. power brokers will drop someone in who is exactly to the liking of the Washington establishment. If that would happen, we would have a manifest revolt on our hands all across this country."

I remember the political Conventions of yesteryear. There would be big fights over party platforms and often over who the candidate would be. Many States would vote a "Favored Son" in their State primaries and that person would go to the Convention holding all of that State's delegates in his hand to bargain with on platform issues and candidates.

Pakistani Council Declares Law Protecting Women ‘Un-Islamic’

A top Pakistani religious council responsible for advising the government to ensure that laws conform with Islam has ruled a new law criminalizing violence against women “un-Islamic.”

Punjab, the largest province in Pakistan, passed the Women’s Protection Act last week. The law is the first of its kind and is intended to protect women from domestic, psychological and sexual abuse. The legislation will also create women’s shelters and a hotline for women to call in order to report crimes. That is, of course, if of course if the law gets by the Council of Islamic Ideology.

“The whole law is wrong,” said Muhammad Khan Sherani, head of the council, during a news conference. Sherani cited verses from the Koran to back up his claim that the law is “un-Islamic.”

NATO: Russia in the way of solving Syrian conflict

NATO on Friday accused Russia of complicating the search for a solution to the Syrian conflict by bombing moderate opposition groups battling President Bashar Al-Assad.

"Moscow's challenge to the international rules-based order now extends to Syria and the Eastern Mediterranean," NATO deputy secretary general Alexander Vershbow said at an annual conference in Krakow, Poland.

"As Russia has provided greater levels of military support for President Assad -- including bombing moderate opposition groups, and driving tens of thousands of civilians from Aleppo and other cities -- it has made it even more difficult to find a long-term end to the violence and a negotiated peace and political transition," he added.

French President Francois Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron had on Thursday also called on Russia and the Syrian regime to "immediately stop attacks on the moderate opposition".

Philippines impounds North Korean ship under UN sanctions

The Philippines said on Saturday it had impounded a North Korean vessel in response to tough new United Nations sanctions introduced in response to Pyongyang's recent nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

The 6,830-tonne cargo ship Jin Teng will not be allowed to leave Subic port, northeast of the capital Manila, where it had been docked for three days and its crew will be deported, presidential spokesman Manolo Quezon said on state-run radio station Radyo ng Bayan.

Largest ever US-South Korea military drill planned as a 'warning to Pyongyang'

South Korea will commit some 290,000 personnel, including special forces, more than double its usual deployment for the annual drills.

The drills will involve 15,000 US troops.

Commence on March 7, with the field-training exercises that make up Foal Eagle lasting until April 30.
