By design and not so 1) Sometimes they are told to stay close to one another in order to prevent a kidnapping, which could become a huge national problem. Yes, that makes them more vulnerable to car attacks, but that's not as bad as a kidnapping if one soldier gets separated from the pack in an enemy neighborhood... 2) IDF for all its strengths and accomplishments.... can definately look like a circus at times. Part of it is that it's a compulsory service not ideally designed to police a crazy hostile environment like the densely built-up Pali areas. Another part of it: IDF conscripts are still teenagers; so they act like we all do -- like overconfident dumbasses -- esp. when you add on top of that the 'Sabra' element, that is Arabized or more of a 'Middle Eastern' sort of culture of gleeful Hubris & Macho not usually associated with a 'normal' Jew you see in the West. It becomes like inmates running the asylum. For instance: if their CO tells them like 50 times not to bunch up like that and to always be aware of their surroundings, using a buddy system to watch each other's backs. Guess what happens? Some of them will think they are Rambo or else just kinda let the mind wander in the desert heat ----> that's where unnecessary casualties will take place. Same thing happened during last summer's Operation Protective Edge. Out of 60 KIA, at least 1/3 could have been avoided. How many times the conscripts were told that Hamas is gonna pop up from the tunnel inside Israeli territory? They let their guard down 3 different times, most notable the 5 cadets slaughtered near Nahal Oz. Or those soldiers who ignored warning about mortars near the border? Don't get me started, all they had to do was take minimal precautions, dig in a few fox holes or use special concrete blocks on site, or even stay close to the tanks to shield them. But nope, it's that Israeli hubris, we are invincible, we are supermen --> cue a dozen totally avoidable shrapnel related deaths. No army is perfect, in other words. |
